Thank you Tammy, Jeremiah and Heather for a terrific stay. The hostel was the best I've been to so far. Free Internet and breakfast was a definate perk. Charleston is a beautiful city and you were close to everything! I will be returning one day.

Having stayed at the Charleston Hostel during previous travels I was expecting a pleasant stay with hospitable staff as before, unfortunately this was not the case. It seems that now the hostel is for sale and the owners have left the management to unexperienced and decidely anti-social staff members. Upon arriving the young lady, for some unknown reason, did not want to give me a receipt for a weeks stay paid in cash. After two days of this person making derogatory political and gender statements I realized why I needed a receipt as I was ready to leave and wanted a refund.Generally when I stay at a hostel staff members knew they were there to make the guests feel at home, not use them for a sounding board for their political views. Yes the location is a bit urban but I knew this and not about the dreadful staff change.Old friends, speaking to owners, please reconsider these new decisions.Good Luck
Although Charleston itself was beautiful and worth the visit, the hostel was not what I expected. Although the kitchen and living room areas were cozy, the dorm style bedroom was very small and cramped.
During the day the hostel seems fine, once the sun sets it's a whole other story. The outside enviornment is frightening. Random people yelling, chasing each other, making comments, asking for money...an overall terrifying experience. We decided to stay 1 night instead of the planned 4 because we were honestly afraid to stay any longer. It's a nice place with friendly people....if only it were moved into a better location. Use caution when booking. The pictures are decieving.
When I arrived in beautiful, clean Charleston SC, I expected this hostel to be as clean as the city. Even though it is not far from the historic area, it is far from being the ideal place to stay.
The neighborhood is dirty , and when I asked if the place was quiet, I was told that the ceiling fans help drown out the noise. For around $40/night, you can get a clean hotel further out. When looking at this wesite, notice that you don't get a larger version of the outdoor view of the house.
In its defense, the hostel is clean on the inside. There appeared to be a nice selection of movies and a comfortable living room and kitchen.
If you do book, only book one day. When I went to see the place and decided not to stay, I was told that I would be charged for both days anyway. When I called back to complain, I was told that I would only be charged for one day, which is the customary charge for less than a 24hr notice in the hotel industry. And although this place has none of the amenities of a hotel, it does charge like one.Buyer beware.
Everything was cheerful, clean and bright. We were comfortable, near everything we wanted to visit, and we loved the historic setting. We were welcomed warmly and felt very much at home.
