Owner description: Experience the sounds that define Charleston's musical history...from gospel to Gershwin. Each weekly live concert features music of the Civil War; light classics of the venerable St. Cecelia Society; the music of George Gershwin, who wrote "Porgy & Bess" during a summer in Charleston; gospel spirituals sung by slaves as they passed through the port of Charleston; and "Amazing Grace", the words of which were inspired in the composer, John Newton, while he worshipped in our host venue, Circular Congregational Church. Visit our website or call the box office for concert dates and ticket information.

“Definitely worth doing!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 17, 2014

This show is just good -- a little touristy, a little canned, definitely on the light side -- but worth the time and effort. For greater cultural gravitas, the Charleston Symphony Orchestra is the way to go.

Thanks for your feedback. Our show is geared toward tourists and providing them with a short, 75 minute musical history of Charleston. The show is designed to be light. We are big fans of the Charleston Symphony and several CSO members perform in our show. Comparing the two, however, is apples and oranges.

“Mediocre Performance”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed June 8, 2014

We were disappointed in this show. The content was very thin and left us wishing we had spent our time elsewhere. While the presentation was enthusiastic the history connections were vague and seemed at least a stretch. The two brightspots were the Rhapsody in Blue on the piano and the Gospel portion. We would love to hear more of that. I would not recommend this show.

Thanks for your review. We are sorry you were disappointed with the show. I would like to respond to two specific criticisms you make...(1) "The content is thin". - The show included exactly what was advertised, a 75 minute history of music in Charleston, including gospel spirituals, music of Gershwin, music of the Civil War, and light classics of the St. Cecelia Society. (2) "Historical connections were vague"...simply not true. Every historical connection mentioned by our host, William Schlitt, has been thoroughly researched and very specific. Unfortunately, this review suffers from the same vagueness that The Sound of Charleston is accused of being. Perhaps the reviewer could be more specific.

“History mixed with great music”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 29, 2014

My daughter and I enjoyed this show! It depicts the history of Charleston through song. Live performers wow the audience especially the African-American family singing traditional Southern songs and the opera singer singing songs from Porgy & Bess!

“A musical treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2014

"From Gospel to Gershwin" says the program and Bill Schlitt, the musical director is a terrific storyteller, together with his team of musicians who told the history of Charleston in 72 minutes of wonderful music.

“Disappointed”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed May 26, 2014

Unfortunately on the night we went to see this show both my girlfriend and I felt this show was not what we expected. After all the great reviews and the description of the show we were looking forward to a fun 90 musical performance. We read that they do historical, jazz and gospel music. We had operatic (which we don't personally care for) and the "southern" music was rather amateurish. The best part of the show which made the evening worth the money was the pure southern sole music at the very end of the performance.
