Checked in and asked for a quiet room as we are driving a lot this holiday. The staff gave us room 426 instead of 215 as they said it would be quieter. Opened the door as it stank of smoke, I also noticed 3 large burn marks in the carpet! Not good... Time to go back to reception...
Back at reception the best room they could off was 215, again. The room smelt ok and everything in the bedroom was fine, but we did notice that the bathroom was showing its age with a huge piece (more than an 1inch) chipped out of toilet cistern lid and the toilet roll holder was falling off the wall. Worse was that during out stay the curly hair on the back of the shower wall we inherited never was removed, yuk!
But if that was it I would have rated this hotel as ‘average’ and left it at that. But sadly what killed this stay for me was 2 awful nights of sleep due to other guests. Hmm.... Is that the hotels fault? I don’t know, but they price themselves and market themselves to a certain client so I think the hotel needs to be accountable, either way I didn’t sleep much here, will you?
Ok, review etiquette questions aside, these other ‘guests’ showed no restraint at all when returning to their rooms at all times of the night. Worse one night we ended up with the room right next door having a ‘get together’ until very late – it took 3 calls to the front desk over an hour to shut them up and yes it was gone 1am before they finally shut up.
The problem I think is that this is one of those hotels where business’ meet and/or training courses are run. The people share rooms, and run between them to visit with their friends. The party people next to us had visitors tap-tap-tapping on their door, with the subsequent shriek of delight at the visitor and then the slamming of the door. At one point this happened every few minutes at way past midnight.
I get that people stuck in meeting rooms all day kick back and hang out in the evening, I get that, Ive done it too... but people need to be aware of others and use ‘inside voices’ and be considerate. The hotel had families with small children as well as people like us who needed our sleep as we are driving huge mileage on our trip.
My feeling was that in this hotel there were way too many noisy people, and the structure of the building doesn’t cope well with it. The room above sounded like a herd of elephants were living there and running around the room every time someone moved in the room, and the adjoining door between our room and next door acted like a speaker for the noise next door, plus the doors slamming down the corridor shook the bed headboard wall. The walls and window were pretty soundproof though which was great as we were over the pool.
So is it fair to down rate a hotel based on other guests? Well In this case I had reduced sleep both nights due to the other people booked in by the hotel, and the way the hotel is constructed, so yes I think it is justified. I cant hand on heart say you will get a good or bad nights sleep if you stay here, but my experience was awful, end of.
Also beware that on a $120 rate there will be $20 of state/city/CACVB taxes here.... Ouch!
So... Do not stay here, unless you are on a course here, then you can have fun all night with everyone else... I guess.
