“Another amazing vacation thanks to Kevin!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

We keep returning to the Courtyard Marriott in the historic district of Charleston for one reason: Kevin McQuade, the concierge! He has made every trip an unforgettable one and this time was no different. My husband and I decided to take my parents to Charleston since they had never been and we wanted them to meet Kevin, our Charleston family! Once again, Kevin found new and exciting things for us to do. We went on a fantastic cemetery tour with Ed Macy as well as his ghost tour. Both were amazing. The cemetery tour was private and we got to experience some awesome history as well as entertaining stories. We also loved the ghost tour as it brought us through a part of Charleston that we had not yet explored. Kevin also creates his own personalized maps of the city to include his famous bathroom map complete with star ratings, best photo ops and graveyards. The hotel is within walking distance of everything you could possibly want to see and Kevin has some great pointers on how to get around. If you're planning on visiting Charleston, make this hotel and Kevin part of the experience and you will not be disappointed!

Had a fabulous time in Charleston thanks to the courtyard by Marriott and the famous Kevin McQuade. Beds were super comfortable and water pressure in the showers was excellent! Toiletries in the bathroom are a little small so make sure you grab a couple extra when you check in! Had some of the best food in my life and had a wonderful time in Charleston thanks to the Marriott staff and Kevin's superb reccommendations.

Dear Lindsaykaye,

Thank you for the excellent review on TripAdvisor. We won't claim to be the best hotel in Charleston but we certainly are striving to have the reputation that puts us in the top 10. That is a very flattering assesment and we are excited that you found everything to your liking.

The new Paul Mitchell line of amenities are well received but we do agree that the bottles are on the smaller side. Thank you for noticing the beds and the water pressure which are 2 important features of a solid hotel.

We hope to see you again soon in Charleston and we would be honored to serve you.

Sincerely,
John Dallas

We just returned from a great trip to Charleston and stayed 4 nights at the Courtyard. The hotel is clean and modern with all the amenities you would expect for a Marriott Courtyard. We had a king bed room which also had a mini fridge to keep drinks cold. From the hotel you are only a 10 - 15 minute walk down to the true historic district, all the great restaurants, shopping on King St., and college of Charleston. Make sure to take advantage of Kevin's knowledge at the concierge desk. Within a few minutes we had a great map of hidden gems to find as we explored the town, dinner reservations at the best restaurants in town for each night of our stay, and recommendations on what tours to take and houses/plantations to visit based on our interests. The hotel staff was very nice and were always around to great you as you returned to the hotel. There is a charge to park your car at the hotel but it is cheaper than most all other options around. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone heading to Charleston for a trip.

Room Tip: Rooms on the back side of the hotel (non street facing) are quieter.

Dear Atrain1273,

Thank you for staying with us here in Charleston at the Courtyard by Marriott Historic District and for the fine comments on TripAdvisor.

Most people do consider that the Historic District starts at Calhoun Street, which is our address, and goes south to the Battery. While it would be 10-15 minutes to walk to Market or Broad street, it is only about 1 minute to get one block over to King street where all the shops and great new restaurants reside. The College of Charleston is literally across the street from our hotel and the TD Arena is on Meeting street across from our new wing of rooms.

Thank you for giving some great tips and we agree that no trip is complete without checking in at the Courtyard and speaking to Kevin and Elizabeth to make the most of your visit to the Holy City.

Sincerely,
John Dallas

The hotel property itself if very typical for a Marriott Courtyard. Well decorated, clean, modern - the bed isn't the best (but isn't the worst, either!) - amenities are good, bathroom is nice & big. You get the picture...

Where this hotel goes above & beyond is in the service - the people at the front desk were just lovely, and incredibly friendly. The concierge is truly in a class of his own - Kevin really helped to make this trip memorable for us. It happened to rain for 3 days while we were there, but Kevin gave us all kinds of wonderful ideas to have fun indoors. He really is a gem!

The one negative for this hotel, however, is that it's a good 10-15 minute walk to the true historic district (South of Broad). So, every time we wanted to head towards the sights or restaraunts in the historic district (which, of course, was most of the time), we were in for a 15 minute hike. The good news... it was nearly enough exercise to walk-off the calories from all those wonderful meals!

Dear L G,

Thank you for coming to visit us in Charleston, the nice review on TripAdvisor and for recognizing that our hotel goes above and beyond on service. Kevin is in a class of his own but as you mentioned we have some incedibly warm and friendly team members that make the hotel a great place to stay again and again.

You noted that the "true" Historic District is south of Broad. For people not familiar with Charleston, most of what is located south of Broad street are the historic homes, gardens and beautiful neighborhoods down to the Battery. I do not believe that there are any restaurants or much commerce located south of Broad.

As has been mentioned here and in some of the best Travel magazines, Upper King is considered one of the best venues for great new restaurants. That is located north of the hotel and north of Calhoun. So while historic Charleston is a must see while you are here, many of our guests are now spending a lot of their time both north and south of our location.

Thanks for being our guest and we hope to see you again soon.

Sincerely,
John Dallas

This weekend was made perfect by our choice of the Marriott Courtyard-Historic Charleston, due to the fantastic hotel staff and Kevin McQuade. After reading many hotel reviews and being somewhat familiar with Charleston, I decided to contact Kevin to see what new and exciting things he would recommend. We spoke several times before our trip and he had everything arranged when we arrived. We travelled with friends, had adjoining rooms and early check-in on Friday, since our romantic carriage ride was to begin at the same time as check-in. The rooms were comfy, with a small fridge and large seating/lounging area.

We are boaters and Kevin suggested a Sat. boat tour of Morris Island and Lighthouse--and it was a great experience. Our guide, Joe, explained the ecosystems and history of the marshlands on the way. Morris Island is completely secluded and has shells covering the beach. Joe gave us plenty of time to explore and enjoy the beauty of the island on our own. On the way back, dolphins surrounded our boat with many picture ops. Kevin made reservations for us at the intimate and delicious Cru Cafe for lunch, then at High Cotton (on Sat. night of College of Chas. graduation) for dinner and we had the best table there. Food and service were wonderful. Then on Sunday, the "gospel brunch" at Hall's Chophouse is an exceptional experience.

As for the parking situation, I recommend parking the vehicle and walking, or taking the trolley or a cab to wherever you go, as the Marriott is so convenietly located. We are still raving about this trip and our experiences. THANK YOU Marriott and Kevin for such a wonderful time in your beautiful city.

Dear Marilyn H,

Congratulations on your wedding anniversary and thank you very much for allowing us the opportunity be your hosts.

You made an excellent choice in Charleston because this area with all of its charm and character really sets up well for a romantic getaway.

Since you are boaters and I know you must love the water, we expect to see you many more times in the future. One of the great parts to the Charleston harbor is its many inlets and areas of exploration.

Thank you for your business and for the great feedback.

Sincerely,
John Dallas

We met our son and family at this hotel for the weekend after Christmas. We had asked the hotel for a room near our son and his two adult children. We were very pleasnatly surprised to find that our room, two Queens, adjoined his suite. The kitchen and living room being between our bedroom and our son's. We paid $16 per night for on site parking. This was well worth it as parking in town is at a premium. As others have written, Kevin, the concierge was most helpful.

Dear Abiah3290,

Thank you for being a Senior Contributor on TripAdvisor and for the excellent review of our hotel here in Charleston.

The week between Christmas and New Year is an excellent time to come visit and it appeared as though everyone really enjoyed the visit.

As you noted, most of our suites have a connecting room which feels almost like a 2 bedroom apartment when you have both rooms opened up. For families traveling, it is a great set up.
Our hotel has 4 suites with a King bed in the bedroom area, and 2 suites with 2 queen beds in the bedroom area for a total of 6 suites.

We thank you for staying with us and we hope that you will return soon for another trip to our magical city.

Sincerely,
John Dallas

I can not say enough about this hotel. As soon as we checked in we felt like we were part of a family. Extremely pleasant , friendly, helpful and funny staff. From the front desk to the hospitality staff. Natasha at the front desk was a joy to work with. Kevin the concierge was the best ever!!! He made our trip. Totally "getting" what we wanted to experience in charleston. His passion and enthusiasm is contagious ! He plans your trip and you don't even have to worry about it. Personally handling things once he " gets" you. Don't even second guess him, just go with it. If you want to experience Charleston and have a great hotel to stay, it's the Marriott hands down!
