“Great location; even better service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2013

The highlight of our stay at the Courtyard Marriott was Kevin, the concierge. His passion for this job--both for showcasing Charleston and providing exemplary customer service--is clear. He was incredibly helpful in choosing meals and daytime activities--and even went out of his way to take us on a private nighttime architectural walking tour (at no additional cost). Charleston is a beautiful city, and Kevin will tell you the best ways to get the most out of your trip!

Spent several nights over NY Eve. Located right in middle of everything you came to see. Corner suite (plenty of windows) was just what we needed....but pricey, as expected. Staff extra polite and helpful. And, yes.......Saint Kevin, the Concierge is as good as previous reviewers say. Too many great restaurants to name. Tommy Dew...I think he is a solo act...gives a unique walking tour (see separate review).

I selected the hotel after reading previous trip advisor reviews about the concierge, Kevin. I was not disappointed. He is terrific! He has maps that he's created showing best photo opportunities, best public bathrooms, and best alleys. His dining recommendations were terrific. And, to top it off, he took us on a nighttime tour of illuminated Charleston - little streets, alleys, hidden gardens viewed behind beautiful gates made even more special by the darkness of night lit by gas lamps and a full moon. This Marriott Courtyard is a real find.

Stayed here the weekend before Christmas. Got a very good AAA rate, hotel was good value for the money. The young lady on the conceirge desk over the weekend was bright, cheerful, and very helpful, suggesting a good bus tour and locations of restaurants. Parking was pretty easy and the location was very good.

Dear fedtraveler66,

Thank you for the top marks on TripAdvisor. We realize that there are plenty of nice hotels in Charleston but we are extremely grateful that you chose to stay here at the Courtyard in the Historic District.

The weeks right around Christmas do have some nice values to take advantage of and you came at an opportune time.

Thank you for recognizing Elizabeth, who works our concierge desk on Kevin's days off. She learned the ropes from Kevin and she also does a great job of taking care of the guests as you noted.

We send you all the best for a healthy and happy 2013.

Sincerely,
John Dallas

We just spent three nights in this hotel. Everyting was fine except the espresso drinks in the impressive lobby, which were terrible. Kevin is indeed quite good but be prepared for a 90 minute wait to meet with the oracle.

Dear zzkk,

Thank you for reviewing our hotel on TripAdvisor.

There is a first time for everything, and this is the first time I've heard Kevin called the Oracle. I looked at dictionary.com and there was one definition that you might have been referring to: A person believed to indicate future action with infallible authority. He might not be perfectly infallible with all his recommendations but he certainly strives for that!

I apologize if you had to wait that long to talk to him but I am hoping that was tongue in cheek. There can be times when Kevin has people waiting but he will make it worth the wait and that will definitely be under 90 minutes. There are a few things in play here. One is that Kevin really does want to understand what you are interested in. The other part is that Charleston is so charming and one of those places that has several different options to explore and some of those are not so quickly explained...that is a great problem to have.

Thanks for staying at the Courtyard in the Historic District.

Sincerely,
John Dallas

Reception and check in was very friendly and welcoming. Room was at the very high standard expected from a Marriott/Courtyard. The location provided great access to the Historic District. Would absolutely stay again.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012

The hotel was very nice and staff very friendly.

Our room: We were on the 4th floor with window facing north and liked the view from our window: a church and a park.
We were also very happy that we got the rate of $107 per night (two queen beds) - AAA-rate.

Our room was spacious and everything in it looked and worked fine. There was even a refrigerator in it. The only complaint was that we had a door in our room (with a dead bolt) to the neighboring room and that's probably why we heard the noisy neighbors at 6 am the second morning. The heater was a noisy too. Still we slept very well the first night and had no problems the second night till the noisy neighbors woke us up the second morning.

Location: The location of the hotel is pretty nice since it is located really close to the King Street with all the little stores that are open in the evening. The park nearby had nice Christmas lights but creeped us out a bit because of some local characters in it.
I wish they told us in the hotel that the free trolley goes to the Market every half an hour or so (except perhaps the drivers' lunch), it would have saved us some walking.

Gas station near the hotel: We were really shocked by what we encountered at the gas station across the hotel. The gas was not pumping and when I made my way inside the convience store and asked the clerk about it, she said that due to a mechanical problem the regular gas was not pumping. It was not clear to me why there were no signs on the pumps about that - only the prices for all three kinds of gas...

Two more things...

We got a coupon ($2 per person) for the carriage ride from the consierge. The carriage ride was the best thing in Charleston hands down.

The on-site parking was very convient, but pricey ($16 per day).

Dear OL Tamina,

Thank you for the excellent review of our hotel here in Charleston. We are always appreciative of high marks and we try our best to keep up that quality and consistency.

You came at a great time to get the lowest rates that we offer all year. Our rates can easily be triple that amount on the weekends in spring and early fall. I really encourage everyone to come to Charleston in the last 2 weeks of December. The weather is typically not too cold and the crowds are not as heavy.

Thank you for the detail of your review. I know connecting doors can sometimes be problematic with some noise transfer but on the whole we do not get very many complaints to that effect. We do try to mention the free trolley that stops outside our hotel. It actually runs every 15 minutes and we have a schedule available at the desk.

We appreciate your business and we all send you the best for the coming new year.

Sincerely,
John Dallas
