“Nice Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2012

Stayed here the weekend before Christmas. Got a very good AAA rate, hotel was good value for the money. The young lady on the conceirge desk over the weekend was bright, cheerful, and very helpful, suggesting a good bus tour and locations of restaurants. Parking was pretty easy and the location was very good.

Dear fedtraveler66,

Thank you for the top marks on TripAdvisor. We realize that there are plenty of nice hotels in Charleston but we are extremely grateful that you chose to stay here at the Courtyard in the Historic District.

The weeks right around Christmas do have some nice values to take advantage of and you came at an opportune time.

Thank you for recognizing Elizabeth, who works our concierge desk on Kevin's days off. She learned the ropes from Kevin and she also does a great job of taking care of the guests as you noted.

We send you all the best for a healthy and happy 2013.

Sincerely,
John Dallas

We just spent three nights in this hotel. Everyting was fine except the espresso drinks in the impressive lobby, which were terrible. Kevin is indeed quite good but be prepared for a 90 minute wait to meet with the oracle.

Dear zzkk,

Thank you for reviewing our hotel on TripAdvisor.

There is a first time for everything, and this is the first time I've heard Kevin called the Oracle. I looked at dictionary.com and there was one definition that you might have been referring to: A person believed to indicate future action with infallible authority. He might not be perfectly infallible with all his recommendations but he certainly strives for that!

I apologize if you had to wait that long to talk to him but I am hoping that was tongue in cheek. There can be times when Kevin has people waiting but he will make it worth the wait and that will definitely be under 90 minutes. There are a few things in play here. One is that Kevin really does want to understand what you are interested in. The other part is that Charleston is so charming and one of those places that has several different options to explore and some of those are not so quickly explained...that is a great problem to have.

Thanks for staying at the Courtyard in the Historic District.

Sincerely,
John Dallas

Reception and check in was very friendly and welcoming. Room was at the very high standard expected from a Marriott/Courtyard. The location provided great access to the Historic District. Would absolutely stay again.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012

The hotel was very nice and staff very friendly.

Our room: We were on the 4th floor with window facing north and liked the view from our window: a church and a park.
We were also very happy that we got the rate of $107 per night (two queen beds) - AAA-rate.

Our room was spacious and everything in it looked and worked fine. There was even a refrigerator in it. The only complaint was that we had a door in our room (with a dead bolt) to the neighboring room and that's probably why we heard the noisy neighbors at 6 am the second morning. The heater was a noisy too. Still we slept very well the first night and had no problems the second night till the noisy neighbors woke us up the second morning.

Location: The location of the hotel is pretty nice since it is located really close to the King Street with all the little stores that are open in the evening. The park nearby had nice Christmas lights but creeped us out a bit because of some local characters in it.
I wish they told us in the hotel that the free trolley goes to the Market every half an hour or so (except perhaps the drivers' lunch), it would have saved us some walking.

Gas station near the hotel: We were really shocked by what we encountered at the gas station across the hotel. The gas was not pumping and when I made my way inside the convience store and asked the clerk about it, she said that due to a mechanical problem the regular gas was not pumping. It was not clear to me why there were no signs on the pumps about that - only the prices for all three kinds of gas...

Two more things...

We got a coupon ($2 per person) for the carriage ride from the consierge. The carriage ride was the best thing in Charleston hands down.

The on-site parking was very convient, but pricey ($16 per day).

Dear OL Tamina,

Thank you for the excellent review of our hotel here in Charleston. We are always appreciative of high marks and we try our best to keep up that quality and consistency.

You came at a great time to get the lowest rates that we offer all year. Our rates can easily be triple that amount on the weekends in spring and early fall. I really encourage everyone to come to Charleston in the last 2 weeks of December. The weather is typically not too cold and the crowds are not as heavy.

Thank you for the detail of your review. I know connecting doors can sometimes be problematic with some noise transfer but on the whole we do not get very many complaints to that effect. We do try to mention the free trolley that stops outside our hotel. It actually runs every 15 minutes and we have a schedule available at the desk.

We appreciate your business and we all send you the best for the coming new year.

Sincerely,
John Dallas

We chose the Marriott Courtyard because it is affordable and centrally located. But this hotel is so much more. The room was lovely and the hotel manager and staff were attentive and welcoming. But the real surprise was the Concierge, Kevin McQuade, who made our 2-day stay in Charleston truly memorable. He took the time to find out our interests and then set up the perfect tours and restaurants for us. In 30+ years of travel, including stays at many 4-star hotels, we have never before experienced such personalized service from a concierge. We highly recommend this holel and Kevin McQuade.

Dear Sally S,

Thank you for the top marks on Trip Advisor. Your comment as to 30+ years of traveling in many 4 star hotels and Kevin being at the top of the list is truly high praise. He continues to look for new ways to delight the guest and we can tell that he helped create a memorable trip for you.

As you mentioned, it is a personal interaction that separates him from the rest because he does realize that people come to Charleston for so many reasons but he wants it to be your vacation.

We appreciate your recommendation of our hotel and we hope that we have the opportunity to serve you again very soon.

Sincerely,
John Dallas

My wife and I went to Charleston for our 15th wedding anniversary. Upon arrival we met with the concierge, Kevin McQuade. What an excellent choice. Short on time and not knowing our way around Charleston Kevin completely mapped our itinerary out for each day. He spent nearly 1.5 hours with us about likes/dislikes and made excellent recommendation after excellent recommendation. He truly not only contributes to the Marriott but to the travel industry in general. I wish we could have his services on every trip! He is extremely proud and passionate about the Charleston area (as he should be -it's a great city!) and it shows through his enthusiasm for him providing concierge services. His custom maps (yes, custom made it himself maps with exact instructions on where and how you should take photographs of the incredible architecture in the Charleston area was just amazing. I have never seen any concierge do this before -he knows Charleston and is well versed on all the sites, historical knowledge, and customizes those to your liking. I couldn't believe how well he could put together an itinerary so quickly but also booked multiple restaurant reservations at excellent locations - again customized to our likes. He truly listens to his customers.

To top this off and still the highlight of our trip is the nighttime tour of Charleston he took us on. This was one of those priceless moments that was just fantastic as we walked the historic district and viewed multiple homes from the streets and the well-known and absolutely beautiful gardens within their grounds. We would have never done this ourselves and Kevin literally walked with us for nearly two hours in Charleston where captured great photos and again just fantastic memories. At one point, to capture a great and unique picture of my wife and I Kevin laid on the ground to get the photo. Frankly, I cannot speak highly enough of him. He went way beyond even great concierge service and truly wanted us to enjoy Charleston culture, architecture, and art that city has to offer. My wife and I still talk about this late night tour - it was the highlight of our trip.

If you go to Charleston you should call Kevin McQuade and book your hotel here. The Marriott itself is great but he makes this hotel incredible and can make your trip a fantastic and memorable experience you will not forget. I have never been so impressed with concierge service in my life and I have traveled internationally and domestically numerous times.

We recently stayed at the Courtyard in Charleston. Rates were reasonable, property was conveniently located to the historic area (walking distance) and room was very clean. Staff was also accommodating. I would recommend this hotel.
