Going to Charleston for New Years (First Night) is a wonderful way to start the year. We stayed at the lovely Renaissance Hotel - friendly and helpful personnel, close to shops and everything. Dinners were outstanding at Ansons and Magnolias. Anything ordered would be delicious and presented beautifully. The First Night celebration was well organized and featured wonderful music, terrific (and loud) fireworks, and friendliness everywhere.

Charleston is such a fantastic city. So fun to walk around looking at the beautifully restored houses and the gardens, and the tiny parking spaces. Plus historic properties and guided tours. Enjoyed the abundance of shopping, and the plethora of good dining choices.

Charleston would be a wonderful place to visit any time of year.

This is a very nice hotel in a good area. But for some reason, we were given a room on the second floor directly over the dumpster and where deliveries were being made, even though the hotel was only 50% occupancy that night. We were in room 208. We were told that all of the non-smoking doubles had been taken, except for this one.

At 7 am we were awakened by a huge crashing noise as the dumpster was emptied in the truck. Later on, the Sysco truck arrived to make its delivery. Try to get a room away from the dumpster and on a high floor and you should be ok.

This does not seem like a true great hotel. Never saw anybody at the concierge desk. The one bellman really didn't help much. At a big-time hotel, you have bellmen outside waiting when you pull up.

The restaurant and bar were good, though. Service was excellent there.

The hotel is very nice and we learned is a popular place for visiting celebs, who often stay here since people assume that celebs will be at the Charleston Place.

What we liked best was the nice, quiet room where we couldn't hear much from either the streets or the neighbors and hallway. The location is wonderful for walking throughout the historic district. Some of the best Southern food we had on our trip was one block away from the Renaissance Hotel. Be sure to stand in line with locals for wonderfully humble home cooking at Jestine's. It's not written up in any of the tourist brochures, but if you haven't had CocaCola cake, fried okra, and whiting go there and get some! I would return to Charleston, and the Renaissance, in a heartbeat (and the chance for pecan pie at Jestine's)

We just returned from Charleston, what a great place to visit and maybe live. This hotel is a very good hotel, a lot of nice features, however it is poorly managed from the coordination between the restaurant side and the hotel side. At checkout I had many extras that were supposedly included when we booked added to our bill. Instead of just removing them from the bill, the lady at the front desk choose to argue with me and tell me that I was wrong! I finally asked for the Manager, He wasn't there so I left and told her to please do her research and that I would return in one hour.
When I returned they had corrected it and given me a $20.00 dollar per night discount for my trouble. I was just happy that I didn't have to gather all of their Managers around and explain how to run a hotel. I was on vacation and that really did ruin my last day there.
The other issue was the poor service at their breakfast buffet. On the weekdays the service was slow and on the weekends it was worse. This part is the poorest managed. That is why this hotel would not rate 4 stars. Everyone was confused and did not know what was allowed or not with any of the packages they offer. There are too many of them for the staff to keep them straight!
Keep it simple!
Otherwise this is a great hotel.
It just needs some fine tuning.
I would also go back here any time.

We spent a week at the Renaissance for our honeymoon and could not have asked for better. The staff was very accomodating to our requests, such as a single bed, before we arrived. We were welcomed in our room with wine and confections, as well as a handwritten note from the management congratulating us. The room was gorgeous and immaculate. They gave us a corner room with a balcony - something we didn't even request. The location was perfect for exploring the historic district - we walked or rode bikes everywhere. Only thing we didn't enjoy was the pool - we were there in April and it was actually quite freezing! Hands down, the nicest hotel we have ever stayed in.
