Owner description: Middleton Place is an 18th century rice plantation and National Historic Landmark comprising 65 acres of America's oldest landscaped Gardens, the Middleton Place House Museum and the Plantation Stableyards. The Gardens reflect the elegant symmetry of 17th century European design. Sculpted terraces, parterres, and reflection pools inhabited by swans are highlights of their intricate design. Rare camellias bloom in the winter, while vibrant azaleas blanket the hillside above the Mill Pond in the spring.

“OK”

Kind of down play the slave aspect except on the slave quarters tour. I think the other plantation is supposed to be better.

Thank you for your review. However, Middleton Place doesn't downplay the slavery issue at all, and in fact, weaves the story of slavery and contributions of enslaved people in Charleston and at Middleton Place into nearly every experience a guest could have.

“Very nice gardens”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

This was our second plantation visit for the day. As with the other visit we suggest taking an umbrella, hat and sun screen as most of the sights are outdoors. While this site is s little more expensive the gardens are expansive and impressive. Since we had taken a house tour at another site we skipped this one and relied on the self guided information using the handouts provided with the tickets. The entire tour took approx. two hours. We enjoyed the trip and will recommend this to our friends.

“Gardens are gorgeous”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2013

Loved the gardens and the animals, both domesticated and wild, that live on the plantation. Worth staying at the Inn and getting after-hours access w/ the room.

Would appreciate more knowledgeable tour guides, though. As a 20+year SC resident, I am very familiar w/ our history, traditions, climate & wildlife. The tour guides, though well intentioned, would only give basic by-rote info and could not answer more detailed questions posed by the tourists. Instead, they just repeated the same information, over and over. On a side note, one actually told a visitor that gators are aggressive man-eaters. I wanted to die from embarrassment, as I my entire college campus was a gator preserve.....
