Owner description: Middleton Place is an 18th century rice plantation and National Historic Landmark comprising 65 acres of America's oldest landscaped Gardens, the Middleton Place House Museum and the Plantation Stableyards. The Gardens reflect the elegant symmetry of 17th century European design. Sculpted terraces, parterres, and reflection pools inhabited by swans are highlights of their intricate design. Rare camellias bloom in the winter, while vibrant azaleas blanket the hillside above the Mill Pond in the spring.

“Highlight of my trip to Charleston!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

I LOVED Middleton Place. We rented a car to take 6 girlfriends to the platntation. The gardens and grounds were exceptionally beautiful. The lunch there was spectacular - best shrimp and grits I ever had. I was disappointed that we ran out of time and didn't get to see Eliza's cabin and film. But now I have something to do next time we visit. The house tour is fascinating, but it was frustrating that they seem to rush you through, when there are so many personal artifacts to see.

One of the most frequent pieces of feedback at Middleton Place is that people feel rushed through the House Museum tour. As previously stated, these tours are currently being revamped to allow visitors more time to soak it all in. Thank you for your review.

“A wonderful way to experience a Southern plantation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

Middleton Place is an awesome way to get a feel for a plantation in the Deep South because not only was it a typical plantation, but it has a fascinating history behind the Middleton family that is entertwined with America's independence as well, obviously, as the institution of slavery. Highly recommended!

Thank you for your review. The administration, staff, and board of directors at Middleton Place have worked hard to have the site be very historically accurate, and to not shy away from the African-American slave experience, but to offer a matter-of-fact history that also highlights the immeasurable contributions of that population to Charleston culture. If one is looking for the history-focused plantation tour while in Charleston, Middleton Place is the way to go.

“Must See! Gorgeous Gardens”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2013

My husband and I just toured the Middleton Plantation in mid-January and the Camelia's were in full bloom. The grounds are just breathtaking, and I really enjoyed the day exploring the gardens and pathways. We paid for the $5 African focus tour which lasts about an hour and a half and focuses on the slave's journey to the U.S. and their life on the plantation. This tour was fantastic and definitely worth your money. We also paid for the $15 house tour which I found really disappointing, it lasted about 30 minutes and you can see paintings of the family and some of their belongings. I'm not sure why that isn't included in the admission price. Food on the plantation is a bit pricey, so if you are trying to save money, I'd suggest packing a lunch or filling up before you arrive.

“Definitely worth a visit, and give the Inn a shot as well”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2013

The house tour is a bit disappointing, but the gardens are absolutely beautiful. There is also a lovely restaurant on site. The inn is definitely worth a peek as well.

The Inn at Middleton Place is one of the hidden gems of Charleston. Every stay includes free passes to the Middleton Place National Historic Landmark. You will also be happy to learn the House Museum tour route and length are in the process of expansion. Thanks for your review.

“The perfect walk and nature experience.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 20, 2013

We just returned from a walk at Middleton. Camelia are in full bloom. Just wandering the paths along the river, the swamp garden, the formal gardens....Middleton's natural beauty should not be missed.
