“Dead Interesting (Sorry!!!)”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

This cemetery is a haven of quiet in Charleston. For a place of rest for the dead,it is full of living history, especially for those interested in the Civil War,The Hunley, and the great and the good of Charleston.I found the monuments dedicated to the three crews of the Hunley very interesting indeed,as we had also been to see the Hunley itself. The grounds are well maintained, but not immaculate, nor should they be.It might seem odd to say,but it has a comfortable and lived in feeling (again sorry !!!).My wife and I had a very relaxing couple of hours meandering through the Cemetery, and taking shade under the trees, beside the local residents !!.Well worth a visit if you are anywhere in the Charleston area.

“Living History!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2013

Well, sort of...

This is a beautiful cemetery. Sedate and stately. Locally revered for its Civil War history, but it has roots stretching back to American independence and branching out through modern warfare. Four generals, a US attorney general, numerous historic figures and beautiful gardens make this a list topper!

“A Beautiful, Historic Cemetery”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 26, 2013

I will tell you right up front I am a Civil War aficionado and this is a final resting place for many participants of that war. I have an uncle who has compiled a fantastic family history and just a few years ago I learned that besides having a Revolutionary War veteran and a Union Civil War veteran in our family tree, I was a distant relative to a Confederate casualty of the Hunley submarine. After the Hunley was recovered and the bodies identified all three crews of this sub were interred in the Magnolia Cemetery. The Hunley history is a fascinating story of bravery and ingenuity, and my relative, Charles Lisle Sprague, (my grandmother was a Sprague) went down not once but twice with this ship. The grounds are magnificently shaded by centuries-old oaks whose majesty is a befitting accent to honor those buried there. If you go bring bug repellent because the mosquitos are plentiful and don't forget your camera.

“A Big Piece of History”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 25, 2013

We anticipated only taking a few minutes at Magnolia Cemetery. But it turned out to be more than an hour. The cemetery is larger than what I expected and is the final resting place for many of the Charleston citizens you read or hear about in history. It is well kept, but not immaculate. And that seems to fit. There are confederate generals buried here as well as the crew of the Hunley submarine. There is no admission fee, but there is a contributions box at the entrance. This is a very pretty and peaceful place to visit.

“Step back in time”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 18, 2013

If you enjoy history, this is a hidden gem in Charleston. The grass is kept cut but many of the iron fences are broken - at first I thought that it should be kept up better but it adds to the simplicity and beauty of the place. Like it's cared for but not changed. Time lives there. I took beautiful black and white photos there. The moss hangs down over some of the tombs and the live oaks give it a sacred feel. Definitely a special place.
