We arrived at 10:00 a.m. to avoid as much of the afternoon's heat and rain showers as possible. The office ladies are very helpful and will give you a map with 25 graves of Civil War notables to find. There is also a large Confederate soldier statue and graves in one large section. The crew of the Hunley submarine that was found about year 2000 is buried together here with a nice memorial for them. Five confederate generals, as well as captains, and other significant historic participants and leaders of Charleston's past are fascinating to see. If you have an interest in American history, this cemetery should be on your "to do list"!! It is about a 10 minute drive from historic downtown, so you will need a car. However, we did see a taxi driving through the cemetery with tourists looking at all the Civil War sites, too. It took us 2 hours on foot and moving the car from section to section, so I'm guessing that was one expensive taxi bill for the others!
