“Yuck! Bad service and no southern hospitality.”

We've stayed in many b&b's and this was one of the worst. The lady who ran it has either done this way too long, is sick of talking to guests or just isn't friendly. When we arrived, she just gave us the key, said when breakfast was and disappeared. She didn't ask us if we needed anything. We couldn't find her and had to call her on our cell to ask for a map (we were walking) and a recommendation for dinner. She brought down this pathetic 8.5" x 11" unlegible black and white copied over and over map. We wandered out (walking) and found a place up with street with wonderful walking maps. Wouldn't you think she would pick up a few of these free maps and have them available for her guests? She had no brochures on historic Charleston, nothing. She said breakfast was at 8:30 and it was 15 minutes late both mornings. She had cold cereal (cheerios and raisin bran), unpeeled miniature oranges and biscuits/bread. She is either too old to cook or never had the talent (I assume the latter). She did not interact with the guests at breakfast at all (or at any other time either). No chit chat, not asking about her guest's trip, what they had seen, where they were going, nothing. I don't think she really cared to have anything to do with her guests at all except to collect the payment.

The house was very old, bedroom was musty, bathroom not updated and the TV was dusty, very old and the cable was grainy. The location was great (in the heart of downtown Charleston), but the service and food were bad. She never even told us goodbye. We just left.

If these folks are just doing a b&b because they have two extra bedrooms and want to supplement their retirement income, I suggest hiring a friendly person to be there during the day to greet guests and also - bring in a cook!!

We stayed on a Saturday night arriving at 8 pm. Marie was there to greet us at the door. She was very nice welcoming us...gave us the keys to the front door and to our bedroom on the third floor and told us to read the rules that was in our bedroom. Room was nice and clean and well decorated..as well as the bathroom. Small door led out to a spacious piazza with table and chairs. There were magazines and books to read. A ceiling fan for those of you..like me that can't sleep without some noise lol. We went walking down to the market area (maybe 1/2-3/4 mile) to eat a late dinner. We walked back a different way to take in the sights...all the way to battery park which is only about 1 block from the house. Breakfast on Sunday was at 8:30 am in the formal dining room..served on very nice china and silverware. Her husband Emerson came out to meet and greet us. They only have two rooms that they rent to guests..so we had our breakfast with two other people. You serve yourself...cereal, biscuits, marmalade/jam, butter, 3 types of fruit, orange juice and your choice of coffee or tea. A nice continental breakfast. Now if you stay on Satuday night as we did..they do attend church on Sunday morning ..so be prepared to settle up with your credit card at breakfast as they will be leaving by 10am or so.(That is checkout time..but if you need to stay longer you can..and just lock up whenever you leave). This is a nice place to stay if you are physically able to carry your bags up 3 flights of stairs and want a nice quiet room and be left alone and come and go as you please. This would not be a good place if you are handicapp or like to spend a lot of time talking with the owners or expect a full gourmet breakfast. Nonethless I would recommend this bed and breakfast...we were in town during a convention and this was the only place out of 20 that I called that had an opening..and the price was on the lower side compared to other places. Owners were nice and courteous to us..since they only rent two rooms...all the money that they make goes towards the upkeep and maintenance of the home..which you can imagine is probably very high with hurricane/flood insurance and trying to maintain a house that was built in the mid 1700's.

They mishandled our reservation terribly, having rented one of our reserved and confirmed rooms to someone else, forcing us to scramble to find a second room elsewhere in town, even though we arrived as agreed at 3:00 PM. There was no one there to discuss the situation, and we still haven't heard back from them with an apology or explanation. We ended up having to take an expensive hotel room far away from our friends who stayed in the one free room, almost ruining our weekend. The location is good, but the owners have clearly lost interest in running this place. Stay away.

Host not present upon scheduled arrival. No assistance with luggage to third floor. No afternoon libations at all and not even a bottle of water available in our room, let alone flowers or welcoming snack. Nothing special about the room. As we were leaving for dinner, hostess asked if we would prefer coffee or tea for breakfast in the morning. I expressed a preference for decaffinated coffee and her response was "if I have some, I'll put it out" (!) There was no decaf in the morning. At breakfast (fruit and cereal, biscuits and jam), which is only served from 8:30 until 9, she seemed very anxious for us to depart and asked if I had brought my credit card with me to breakfast. No assistance with bringing luggage down from third floor. I was traveling with my 80 year old mother and found this to be a very disappointing experience. I would not recommend them and would certainly not consider staying there again. Next visit to Charleston, I will book the Meeting Street Inn.

Welcome to Charleston. Set your watch back 200 years. We came for the candleight home tour and found our B&B far more charming than anything on the tour. Slight problem checking in as owners were in Europe, Host was owner's son who was not on premises.

House is lovely, and has not been modernized except for bathrooms which may be 1920's. Deep clawfoot bathtub! Location allows for walking to everything, and there was off-street parking. You don't have to close your eyes to imagine yourself in the 18th Century.

Suite was clean and spacious including a fireplace, dressing room and large private bath.

Owner's son was extremely friendly and welcoming. Breakfast was both excellent and elegant. Household companions were a friendly Persian cat and and adorable, loving little Cavalier King Charles Spaniel we were privileged to walk morning and evening (our choice) and who visited our room (again our choice.)

We will most certainly be returning next year.

A fantastic place to stay. The bedroom was huge, comfy, and furnished with an antique sofa, many beautifully carved chairs, and excellent pieces of china and art. Off street parking was available. The bathroom fixtures were antiques and fun to use – a genuine claw-foot tub. The French doors led to a piazza with a lovely view, and you could hear the many fountains in the neighborhood. There is a friendly spaniel and persian cat who will sit with you downstairs. Continental breakfast was an elegant experience. Mrs. Read serves breakfast in the formal dining room on beautiful china and polished silver.

  • Liked — The beauty of the home. It was furnished to period, which was the point of staying in a B&B.

Great location, lovely house but spoilt by owners who do as little as possible for guests.
Advertised in the B&B guide as "gourmet breakfast" which swung it for me. In reality it was merely adequate - 3 strawberries per person, 1 biscuit each, serial, fruit juice and a banana. One morning a bought in applie pie which was microwave heated. This is not Southern hospitality. Guests get a list of rules e.g. switch off all ligths, switch alarm on and off etc.
Our room had a bug infestation and we had to kill them off each day, owner said they were silverfish - clearly the room was not checked before guests arrived as several dozen of these bugs we hanging from the ceiling. When I stood on the bed the get rid of some more I saw 1/2" of dust behind the bed headboard and we had a sliver of glass in the bathroom - clearly this room wasn't vacuumed very often.
