“King George IV - Home away from Home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 26, 2013

This B & B is perfectly located in the heart of Historic Charleston, making your car completely unnecessary. The rooms are spacious, the housekeeping is excellent and the food is wonderful and plenty of it.

Our weather was a bit cold, but our spirits were lifted by easily returning to the King George for hot cocoa and cookies along with a hot shower and a nap.

Call Terry for a reservation, he's a wealth of knowledge and very helpful.

Room Tip: Charleston is a City, hence most townhouses are Vertical, The better shape you are in should determi...

Spent 3 nights and couldn't have found a better place. Staff very helpful and know the ins and outs of Charleston. Our room was everything we could have wanted and the piazzas were so inviting. The location is perfect and within walking distance of all the history.

We spent 6 nights at King GeorgeIV in early March. We enjoyed our stay because of the location, the history of the house and its quaint charm, and especially because of the friendly advice and suggestions from Charlene, the manager. This inn might not be the place for everyone. The breakfasts, while good, were not great. There were scrambled eggs with sausage or bacon, homemade breads, and grits or biscuits with gravy every day. The rest of the selections were packaged cereals, cookies, pastries and fruit served in a small breakfast room. While adequate, consistent and tasty, it wasn't a lavish B &B breakfast.
Because of a prior booking for our room, our stay was actually divided between two different rooms. As one might expect in a very old house, the bathroom fixtures and space as well as the lighting were less than ideal. I had to rig up a hand held mirror near a window with natural light in order to apply my makeup each morning in the first room (#6). The first room also faced the front of the house which meant traffic noise through the night was considerable. However, the small kitchenette with attached porch was a nice addition. The second room (#4) provided better lighting but the bathroom and shower space was extremely narrow and difficult to navigate. Both rooms provided comfortable beds, climate control, and were very clean as well as beautifully decorated. The staff was extremely accommodating and friendly (Charlene even made reservations for us for restaurants and activities) and the location was close to the historic district's activities, restaurants and shops and the College of Charleston. I would not recommend this inn to anyone who has trouble with steps unless you are able to get a first floor room. Steps to upstairs rooms are often uneven, steep and tricky. Overall, a nice place to stay for the money.

We (my wife and I, in our 70s) stayed here for a night during a stopover in Charleston. We found this place quite by accident, but are very very glad that we did. It is a charming older building, conveniently located in the heart of historic Charleston. It does not have the flash of some of the more expensive places, but the old-world charm more than makes up for that. One has the sense of sharing in the history of the past. Our room (1B) has a very comfortable bed, good bathroom and is easily accessible; the neighborhood is quiet day and night. There are plenty of good restauants within walking distance. There is convenient parking and the breakfasts are great. We were pleasantly surprised by the room rates. The innkeeper, Terry, was welcoming and the manager, Charlene, is over-the-top friendly and helpful. We will be going to Charleston again next year and we will definitely stay here again.

There is a reason that this B&B is rated so highly: it is in an ideal location, especially for the College of Charleston, and the owners and staff make everyone feel so welcome. It is one block from shopping on King Street and from the free Trolley stop. It is a bit longer from the heart of the tourist area: 15 minutes of brisk walking from Market Street. Charlene, who works most mornings, is a wealth of information about places to go and things to see. Pay attention to her recommendations on places to eat (e.g., Caviar and Bananas!!).

The breakfasts are large, the beds are comfortable and the rooms are spotless and very large. I checked MANY rates around town and the King George IV is very competitive for what you get.

George Street can be noisy--probably why Terry has disposable earplugs at the counter where you check in. If you are going to the College of Charleston for an event, you couldn't find a better location. One note of caution, the upper rooms are up a steep and long staircase.

The rating was a tough call for me. I've stayed at more sumptuous places, and it's a long walk from the tourist area and museums. There are few annoyances (noise and slow plumbing), so I was tempted to rate this a four of five, but there are too many good pluses that overshadow the other petty things.

You'll enjoy your stay here.

Room Tip: Avoid 1B, right next to breakfast room and laundry. Rooms 2 and 3 are nice and are on the second fl...

Six of us ( three couples) just spent a few nights at this charming inn located among the College of Charleston buildings. Accomodations were spacious and warm, location was great ...the housekeeper Charlene was sensational, attending to all of our needs and cookin" up some fabulous grits each morning....however, if you are looking for a comfortable great room, some common space to relax and sip whiskey, this inn is not for you. Having said that, we shared a wonderful porch overlooking a quiet street and enjoyed every minute of our stay. Charlene was just a charmer, offering good suggestions regarding sightseeing and dining. A young woman, Emily, was also on hand to assist Charlene and she was quite nice as well ( not to intimate that Charlene wasn't a young woman)..Anyway..this inn is a real find.and if I get back to Charleston I'll stay again

Room Tip: second floor rooms are all great

We stayed at the King George IV from Feb. 10 to the 15th and found the B&B to be a real bargin. The location was excellent on a quiet street between Meeting and King streets. We didn't even rent a car as it was within walking distance of the best of Charleston and there were restaurants everywhere. It was very close to the College of Charleston which has an incredibly pretty campus.
The B &B is a handsome former residence that has the typical beautiful Charleston archeture and multiple inviting porches. We had our wine on ours each evening deciding on where to eat dinner. Our room was a bargain with a room , a fireplace and an adjoining sitting room with another fireplace couch TV and refriderator. The mattress was a brand new memory foam, it was the first time we ever slept on one and it was great.
Breakfasts were only average served in a smallish room, but in better weather there were nice outside tables. The breakfasts consisted of cooked to order omlets or eggs any style, breakfast meats and a self service toaster for muffins etc. Good but only average compared to some of the B&Bs we have stayed around the country. But breakfast was stll very enjoyable with much conversation with other guests.
We would definitely return.

Room Tip: Room number 4 had the sitting area and wonderful bed. There was some student noise in the evening bu...
