“My Dream Honeymoon”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 13, 2013

It had always been my dream as a little girl to spend my Honeymoon at The Palmer House. On October 5th, I was able to do just that. It met my expectations in every way possible. The home is simply beautiful and the history, fascinating. The room was beautiful and opened onto the 3rd floor veranda. The view of The Battery and Harbor were breathtaking. The staff were wonderful, as was the full breakfast. Ashley, was beyond helpful with some problems that came up right before the wedding and could not have been sweeter throughout our entire stay. Francess Palmer, the owner, welcomed us to her home as if welcoming old friends as opposed to just guests and made us feel so very at home. The whole stay from beginning to end exceeded our expectations and we could not have enjoyed anything more. We cannot wait to go back.

Room Tip: The 3rd floor rooms are spectacular, with their veranda and harbor views. That alone was worth the p...

We absolutely loved Charleston, the people, the beauty, the food, the gardens, the homes we saw were magnificent. Based on the information we had received we fully expected the Palmer Home to match this experience. We were sorely disappointed. The house is tattered and torn, our rooms were a compilation of mismatched furniture featuring uncomfortable beds and unusable stained sofas, odd lamps, old tv sets and rotting air conditioners. The pool was filthy and unusable and the on those hot days we had so looked forward to that! There was a creepy old 'pool room' with nasty dusty junk in it, a rickety outdoor spiral staircase to the main floor that I am sure is about to come off. The food was mediocre at best and at least they should have decantered the Costco wines! The staff was pleasant and friendly - we never did meet the B&B owner the entire stay which was odd at best.

Room Tip: Do not stay in the Carriage House!!!!

I apologize that you were unsatisfied with your experience here. Our furniture is all unique to the house, as we try to maintain the historic downtown Charleston feel. We steam clean all of our furniture as well as do our best to try to keep all of the leaves out of the pool. The pool room you are referring to is not part of the community area for the guests, as explained upon arrival. It is actually part of our owner's personal living quarters, as we explain that she lives on the first floor. The outdoor spiral staircase is simply another way to get to the piazza if you so choose. Most of our guests prefer these stairs as it is a slightly shorter route than walking through the house, but of course we offer two other staircases as well. Our food is made the classic southern way and is prepared fresh everyday, and I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it as much as we do. Our wine and cheese hour is very popular among the guests, and most of our guests enjoy it every day of their stay.

Thank you for your feedback, as we always like to know what we can improve on.

Stayed 3 days recently the house was oozing the deep south. Fantastic location on the harbour. Great breakfasts and happy hour. The staff were extremely lovely and helpful. I will go back and spend more time in the future. Thanks to Ashley, Marie and Mrs. Palmer for a great experience.

Room Tip: All rooms are great

I'll start with the positive -- fabulous location that overlooks the harbor and easy walk to many places.

This place needs an overhaul; it's as though someone hit financial hard times. It's dusty, paint peeling, horrific swimming pool that was filled with leaves. The plaster on the pool needs to be replaced and I seriously doubt if a pool man ever services it. There's a room with a pool table and it was so dusty. The same breakfast -- eggs, grits, bacon, and biscuits/bread every day. The wine served was from Kirkland and cheddar cheese with flavored triscuits. Nothing exciting there and the cost of the B&B is high. There are spiral staircases and thank goodness, I didn't stay on the top floor as I doubt I would be able to get my luggage up the stairs. I stayed in the Carriage House and it was musty smelling. None of the windows opened so no way to air it out. There is so much dusty crap in the rooms that a purge is needed. The LR furniture in Carriage House was un-seatable; we didn't dare. No robes; no bath caps. After 4 nights, we still never met the innkeeper but, there are a lot of pictures of her in the public area.

First off, let me say thank you for taking the time to write a review for us, as any feedback is very helpful. I am so sorry you had a bad experience with us. As far as our pool is concerned, we have weekly maintenance by a pool company, and one of our housekeepers cleans the leaves out daily. It is extremely hard to keep all leaves out at all times because of the beautiful oak and pecan trees that are notorious to the historic downtown area surrounding it, but we try our best. For breakfast, we also offer four different types of cereal, varieties of yogurt, and large bowls of mixed fruits. Our wine and cheese in the afternoon is very popular among our guests, as we change both types of crackers and our variety of cheese every day. Our carriage house, that you stayed in, is our most expensive room due to the fact that it has a full kitchen, dining room, and living room, and is designed to hold up to six people. We have a spiral staircase off the side of the piazza to have a quicker route to get into the house, in addition to our other sets of regular stairs. We have an elevator for our guests' luggage, and are always happy to take it to their rooms for them. Our housekeepers dust every room every day. We provide robes in the dressers and closets of the rooms as well.

Again, I apologize for your bad experience, and thank you for your review.

My wife and I had a wonderful Honeymoon at The Palmer Home. We were fortunate to be guests in the Front Room which overlooked the harbor and Fort Sumter. We enjoyed a refreshing swim in the pool each morning before breakfast and again in the afternoon after a full day exploring the city. Each evening we enjoyed wine and cheese on the Piazza before a leisurely stroll to one of many nearby restaurants for dinner. The staff were always helpful, friendly and very accommodating. The history of the Palmer Home is fascinating. We have stayed a couple times now but will always remember our honeymoon - it was a great location for our first week together. Thank you for the memories. Andy and Beth S.

My fiancee and I got engaged on the veranda outside the Front Room. Great place for a romantic weekend and walking distance to almost anything you would want to see in Historic Charleston. Ashley was great and helped me with everything I needed to make the engagement weekend go off without a hitch. The breakfasts were great and the pool was refreshing after a day of walking around town in 95 degree weather Charleston weather.

Room Tip: Get a room on the third floor to enjoy the amazing veranda overlooking Charleston Harbor.

If your dream is to stay in a mansion on the battery, this spot is for you, but reality does not meet the dream. The location is excellent, and the house is magnificent, but tired--bathrooms are kind of gross, paint is peeling, but the bones of the house are magnificent, and the staff is wonderful. Breakfast is very good.

Thank you so much for taking the time to write us a review, as any feedback helps us tremendously! We have recently undergone a change of management and are currently working very hard to update the house, including painting. We wholeheartedly agree that the house is beautiful and want to make sure we make it look its best for our guests! We hope to see you again in the future!
