“Fantastic As Always”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 17, 2014

The staff at the front desk, the entire wait staff in the Peninsula Grille, and the housekeeping staff were not only excellent, but truly caring and helpful. The accommodations were elegant. The location is the best in Charleston. This was our third stay and we cannot wait to return (but next time we will take a train to Charleston: the most beautiful city in the whole country).

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 15, 2014

My wife and I came for a weekend getaway in Charleston. We were really pleased with Planters Inn, and would recommend it to others. Really, if it weren't for the cost, I would probably considered giving it a 5 star rating. Some pros and cons:

Pros:
- Location. Definitely the best part about this hotel. You can walk to most anything you would want to in Charleston and could probably get away without renting a car.
Service. All of the staff were very nice and helpful. They would always go out of their way to help you. The turn down service with different little treats each night and ambient music is a nice thing to come back to in the evening.
- Lobby/Courtyard. Really neat. You really get a sense of the history here, and they have kept it up so nice.
- Bathroom. The rooms and lobby have nice bathrooms.

Cons:
- Room size. A little too small. I realize the historic building (this has been a functioning hotel for over 100+ years I think) probably limits their ability to do anything about this though.
- Room decor. The decor walks a fine line between being fitting for the historic atmosphere and just feeling a little dated. Overall it worked though.
- Price. In the end I feel like the cost was a little high.

One thing that we didn't get to check out while we were there was the restaurant, which everybody says is amazing. In summary, Planters Inn gave us everything that we were looking for but didn't transcend necessarily. We would recommend it to others, and are glad we stayed there.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 14, 2014 via mobile

I so wanted to rate this hotel as a Five, because in truth it's in the top ten or fifteen of hotels in which we've stayed.
The building is beautiful, the room sumptuous and comfortable. The Peninsula Grill is outstanding for dinner, (see separate review) and the continental breakfast is excellent. The staff is top notch, most everything about this hotel is first rate.
So why only four stars?
Because, as a Relais & Chateaux property, I just expect more. I expect to be blown away by every aspect of the property, like we have been at le Chateau de Mirambeau near Cognac or at the Post Hotel in Lake Louise.
I expect something extra like the cognatheque or the wine cellar.
The Planters Inn, in my opinion, falls just short of that type of standard.

Nits: The shower is a normal bathtub type shower with a flimsy shower curtain and a standard shower head that you'd find in a Holiday Inn. The air conditioning has two settings. Noisy, and off. There is no spa, no pool, no babbling brook, pastoral meadow, or mountain view. The location, while central to all the fine restaurants, is also right next to some of the top tourists "traps" of Charleston, including the market, which, while indeed an icon of this fine city, is very busy and noisy. Souvenir and t shirt shops are literally right next door.

Did I mention this is an excellent hotel?
It is. The room is wonderful. The furnishings beautiful. The common room on the main floor is warm and inviting. We would stay here again, and happily recommend it. I just think it falls a bit short of what is expected of the exceptional standard of a Relais & Chateaux property. And I just can't in fairness give it the same rating as le Chateau de Mirambeau.

Very nice place to stay. They overbooked and then upgraded me to a Premium room that was not on the internet. I was told it was a bigger room w/o the terrace but this one had a fireplace ! I was excited. Get there and guess what? The fireplace gas had been turned off till October !! Why use that as a selling point was my question. That did not matter because the location was perfect !! Right beside the open air market !!

Room Tip: Stay in the historic building.

The Planters Inn is well located for exploring Charleston. The staff, especially Jake, was knowledgeable and helpful. We enjoyed a gracious dinner at the Peninsula Grill, and of course tried the legendary coconut layer cake. Despite this, the hotel is pricey for what it offers, and at the prices charged, a quite bit more could be expected of the rooms and amenities.

Dear Robin G,

Although we may not be the least expensive option for lodging in Charleston; we are confident we are one of the best small boutique hotels in the city and by far the best hotel and restaurant combination in the historic district. We are pleased you enjoyed our prime location, our attentive and friendly staff and your meals at Peninsula Grill. Thank you selecting Planters Inn and Peninsula Grill to enjoy your stay in Charleston.

Kind Regards,
Bradley Dickerson, Hotel Manager

Planters Inn is a lovely hotel, as a Relais Chateau property I expected a bit more, especially for the price. There were several "little things" which added up to a less that five star experience. When we checked in with our confirmation in hand the front desk gentlemen keep looking at the computer screen with a troubled look in his face, then had to consult with his manager, which read to us: oops we don't have a reservation for you. The manager came over and when I asked about this, he said they had openings. Not a good start. Our room faced the street, not optimal.
The room was beautifully decorated, which is why I chose to stay here from the photos. Once in the room we found a lack of horizontal surfaces on which to put our personal items. Lack of drawer space, the bathroom was nicely done and quite large, no place to put personal products for two people. The shower had a skimpy shower curtain, water went all over the floor. In a property of this caliber there is no excuse for this.
There was no in room coffee or tea making set up. When I called the front desk for a tea kettle, they misunderstood this request, when I called again I was told they don't have this for the rooms, but other guest have requested this as well and thy are looking into it. Not a good answer, the correct answer would be " of course we will send it right up". The location is perfect, it is a lovely property, but the extras are missing.

Room Tip: Away from the main street

Dear Karen,

We apologize for the uncomfortable feeling you experienced upon arrival as this is far the normal warm southern hospitality we are known to provide our guests. Our efforts to welcome guests “into our home” is a principle found in each and every Relais& Chateaux property. Thank you for your suggestions and comments; as we will definitely take them under consideration as we continually upgrade our guest rooms and public space throughout the property. We hope to see you again on your return trips to Charleston. May we suggestion a larger Plantation King for your next visit; a very popular choice with our guests that may provide the little extra space you desire.

Best Wishes,

My husband and I stayed here in the fall last year (late review, sorry!) and could not have been more pleased! The location was perfect, central for walking everywhere we wanted to go; especially the market across the street - easily take loads of find right back to our room! The room service was great - breakfast in bed on vacation is perfection (their in-house granola is amazing!). I loved that the light switches had dimmers, warm lighting instead of just constant bright or dark. The turn down service in the evening was lovely and all the staff within the hotel are extremely courteous and helpful. The only thing that would have been nice is the ability to have coffee/tea in the room directly. They have a full service station in one of the front living rooms, but sometimes you don't want to go all the way to the front of the public space for a cup of tea. We look forward to being able to stay here on all future trips; it is romantic, central and the perfect nod to luxury without being snooty. Thank you for a lovely anniversary!
