“Lux Value in Charleston”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 21, 2013

The Planters Inn should be on your list of possibilities if you're looking for a luxury hotel in Charleston. A large, beautifully decorated room (ours was a King Deluxe), friendly staff with a can-do attitude and an unbeatable location in the historic district all combined to make for a very pleasant base from which to explore Charleston. The front desk was especially helpful in making our local arrangements and they provided very candid, and useful, opinions on which local establishments to avoid as tourist traps. While not in the very top tier of all luxury hotels...this is a very solid offering... and we'd happily stay again. BTW...the room rate isn't top tier either - making this a good value.

Room Tip: Room 214 is an interior King Deluxe overlooking the courtyard (but with a partial view of a roof...

Dear DinerfromStuart,
Visiting Charleston in the summer months can be a perfect opportunity to enjoy the history and charm of this amazing city while benefiting from a little less traffic. We are pleased you found our guest services team accommodating, knowledgeable and friendly. Our Relais & Chateaux Planters Inn is one of the best small boutique hotels in the southeast and a premier destination in the heart of Charleston’s historic district as recognized by the likes of many travelers and industry leading publications. On your next visit, please be sure to allow us to secure a dining reservation at our famed Peninsula Grill to enjoy the amazing regional cuisine of Chef Graham Daily and his team. You will not be disappointed! Until then,
Best Wishes and thank you again,
Bradley Dickerson, Hotel Manager

My wife and I have stayed at the Planters Inn twice, once was for my daughters wedding last year when we stayed for 5 days and then this June for (3 days) our 40th anniversary and our daughters 1st. We love this Inn the rooms are very comfortable and decorated in the period of furnishings we love. The staff at the Inn are very friendly and helpful. They always do the little things that make this Inn special like remember your name when you walk in the front door and are always ready to help you with any of your needs. I would like to thank Rachel Snead for a great job setting up the wedding reception at the Peninsula grill and also for helping us setup our trip this year. I can't say enough about this young lady what an asset to the Planters Inn. My wife and I will be back again. Thank you

Room Tip: We stayed on the second floor and I was very quiet.

I've stayed at Planter's Inn for business and family trips. They always have flawless service from the front desk to the maids. Fantastic location. An outstanding restaurant on site. Try the shrimp and grits. For desert, the coconut cake is a must!

Dear Purday Family,
A true testament to any businesses success is the loyalty of its customers. Thank you for your continued patronage of Planters Inn and Peninsula Grill for both business and leisure travel. We have been known to become a home away from home for many repeat guests that have become fond of our charming circa 1844 property.
“Impeccable service, outstanding restaurant” are wonderful compliments to our dedicated team of professionals. Flawless service, as you point out, is a critical element to our success that also creates a sense of welcome and an almost infectious desire to return for yet another visit from the minute our guests leave the front door. We thank you for you kind words and especially our thoughtful posting as one of our regular guests.
Best Wishes until next time,
Bradley Dickerson,

My sister and I visited Charleston for the first time this past weekend to celebrate our birthdays. GREAT town and absolutely fabulous hotel. The location is perfect for visitors who don't have a rental car. This hotel is located right in the heart of the city, walking distance to everything. The staff here really know how to make each guest feel like family. From the front desk staff, the doormen, the housekeeping staff and the resturaunt staff, every single employee knew their role and were passionate in fulfilling it.

The airline actually lost my luggage when I arrived and needless to say I was not a happy camper. But as soon as my sis and I got to this hotel, the staff did everything they could to ease my comfort, including champagne delivered to our room (it was our birthdays). They honestly cared!

The rooms are beautiful and the beds...wow...so comfy! The bathroom was huge and I loved the plantation shutters. Comforable all around! Oh, and I liked our teddy bear...nice touch!

The food is amazing...and yes, the cake is too. :) The lobby has a sitting area that always has fresh iced tea and lemonade waiting. We always felt refreshed returning from a day of walking and shopping.

If you are picky where you stay and want first class everything, then this is the place to stay, hands down. Thanks, Planters Inn, for giving my sister and I a holiday to remember!

Room Tip: We had a room with 2 queen beds on the first floor. Very comfortable.

Charleston, SC is an incredible place to visit. After sight seeing historical places, shopping, overeating and finally needing a rest Planters Inn is a welcome respite. The rooms are beautifully appointed and the staff gracious and helpful. The central location allows guests to walk anywhere within the downtown area--and you will want to park your car!

I was a single lady on this trip before picking up my husband at the airport for a wedding. I always felt safe and looked after by the staff Elevator entry and hotel toilets required room keys. My room was in the newer wing which offered updated bathrooms with spa tub, a king bed and balcony for sipping coffee in the morning and lounging or reading in the shade of the the afternoon. Accommodations were impeccably clean and tasteful with lovely linens and pleasant service. Concierge recommendations were spot on!

An especially thoughtful detail for guests was an open invitation to sit in their comfortable parlor with an available service of hot coffee and tea in the morning or lemonade and iced tea in the afternoons. The ambiance was so hospitable that guests often conversed amongst each other with genuine Southern hospitality! The Peninsula Grill restaurant there was exceptional as well.

For a city recently given the #1 US destination I simply cannot understand why there is no top class hotel here. Orient Express have Charleston Place that goes there until you enter the rooms. Across the road is the quant Planters Inn and that's about the best you can say for this southern belle... A rickety elevator takes you to your floor and while the rooms are adequately furnished when you're paying near on $1000.00 per night, admittedly for a suite, to not have a mini bar or room service is something out of the dark ages...staff try very hard to please and are willing and courteous but when a place doesn't click it just doesn't click !!

The dichotomy of this place is the presence of an extremely top class restaurant in The Grill.

An abundance of locally sourced ingredients treated with invention in the kitchen go to make up a sterling menu.

Clearly, they have hired an interior designer who would do very well to be let loose upstairs and make this place somewhere you'd like to go back to !!

Dear RGold,
We are pleased you able to visit our #1 city and to enjoy the award winning cuisine of our famed Peninsula Grill. Our charming circa 1844 Planters Inn is a proud member of the small luxury collection of Relais & Chateaux properties of the world. Our character and southern charm are evident from the moment you enter our grand old building; you are transported into a gentile old house that is bustling with service staff that anticipate your every need. Our spacious room and suites are classic Charleston in their décor and furnished with an array of period pieces, historic reproductions, oriental rugs, and furnished with the finest interior touches that are both subtle in their rich tones and soft color palate; but also include such truly unique Charleston touches such as our sweet grass baskets found in every room.
We appreciate your suggestions and thank you for your ideas. Although we are confident we are one of Charleston’s finest small boutique hotels; we always welcome guest input and thoughts to help improve our operation.
Kind Regards,
Bradley Dickerson, Hotel Manager

We really enjoyed our stay here. Great central location, friend and helpful staff, fine dining in the hotel, and very comfortable room. This hotel is right next to the market area, an easy walk to fine restaurants, close to a variety of carriage tours, and convenient for upscale shopping. A good choice for a pleasant stay in Charleston.
