“Great location but noisy!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 4, 2013

Hotel is very nice but if your room
Faces Market street you will hear
Lots of street noise. You are in the
Middle of the city but they power wash
The sidewalks of the market across
The street so u will hear the relentless
Generator from about 1:00Am till
2:00 Am, quite annoying especially if
U want to sleep a little before having
A great next day in the best city in the
US.....
Just ask not to face market street!!!!!
You will enjoy,..

Dear CaptivaSun,
We appreciate your feedback and suggestions on room location selections. It is true many of our rooms face the historic City Market. We have confirmed the noise you experienced of “power washing” was indeed a private company and a unique situation; not the city of Charleston cleaning the streets and sidewalks as we had suspected. We are happy you enjoyed our city the next day and hope you give us another opportunity on your next trip to Charleston and we will be happy to find a courtyard location on your return trip.

Best Wishes,
Bradley Dickerson, Hotel Manager

If you are looking for a hotel in the historic district of Charleston that provides elegance and sophistication yet is casual and friendly look no further. The hotel provides clean and beautifully appointed rooms in a renovated 18th century building. Try to avoid second floor rooms that face the street and/or have antique street lamps out side of the windows. While not a problem for most people could pose a sleeping issue for others. Hotel staff and Peninsula Grill are extremely well trained and hospitable. If you want the history and quaintness of Charleston to extend to your hotel Planters Inn is for you.

Room Tip: Grand Kings and Plantation Kings are wonderful. Ask for a room with a fireplace if desired. Spurge a...

Dear TNMarine,
“Casual Elegance”…. An appropriate and much appreciated description of our property. We are pleased to read you enjoyed our service and the dining experience of Peninsula Grill during your visit. Your street side suggestion should include a note that our many of our guests rooms include interior shutters for additional privacy from light and sounds to make your stay more enjoyable. Planters Inn and Peninsula Grill offer guest a relaxing retreat in the heart of Charleston’s historic district; however our service simply makes a return visit a must! On behalf of our team, we look forward to your next visit.

3 star hotel in a 5 star location. It feels like they need to refresh the rooms. I have stayed here many times and the rooms can really vary. We couldn't stay in the balcony rooms as requested at reservation because they didn't have any roll aways or rooms with 2 beds.

Room Tip: I prefer the rooms not in the main hotel, facing courtyard

Dear Todd-Shenadoah,
As frequent guests, you are somewhat familiar with our vast array of room categories. From your recent review, it appears you may have experienced our one and only double queen room located in the piazza building on a previous visit. It is unfortunate we were unable to accommodate a request for this location on your recent trip; however we always strive to note and deliver on preferred locations or even favorite room numbers for our return guests. Many of our return guests have their “favorites” and we strive to secure such requests during the reservation process at every opportunity. We are confident in our ranking and proudly make continual upgrades to our property, rooms, and physical plant.
Allow me to assist you with securing your favorite location on the courtyard for your next visit and I’m confident you will be welcomed back to the room you prefer.
Best Wishes,
Bradley Dickerson, Hotel Manager

Planters Inn is made great by the people. Everyone we met was very friendly and helpful. Many places have friendly and helpful people on their staff. Planters Inn is exceptional because the people are alert to ways they can be helpful. They are not focused on their computer screen until you stop in front of them they are alert to your approach.

It's difficult to describe the facility. It's not a luxury resort nor does it pretend to be. It's historic downtown Charleston not Las Vegas. It's a perfect old hotel in a beautiful old city. It fits perfectly in its surroundings. There is so much to do and see within steps of the front door and so many wonderful places to eat. The Peninsula Grill in the hotel lobby was a special treat. The food was incredible, the staff enjoyed what they do and seemed proud of their food and service. They added something special to the dining. Guests of the hotel are made to feel part of the family. The staff knows who you are. They seem pleased that you chose to stay and eat with them while in a city full of so many eating choices.

We stayed at the hotel for four nights. There was never a moment where we were uncomfortable.

Room Tip: The hotel spans the width of a city block. Rooms on the road opposite the front entrance suffer earl...

Here is my thought.......average room.......no real room service available....continental in the morning...did that one morning and half of the breakfast was missing? they will do evening room service but strongly recommend visiting the peninsula grill....My opinion...I like room service in the morning.....there is no where in the hotel to get a snack in the mid day....you have to go out on the street...usually crowded. Our room was cleaned inconsistently some times great other times not so......
doubt we would stay again....will try the Charleston place....comes highly recommended.

We appreciate your comments and have addressed your concerns and observations with our team. It is true we offer continental room service for breakfast and apologize for your incomplete order and inconsistent housekeeping service. With regards to dinner at Peninsula Grill; we do encourage our guests to join us in the dining room for the true experience of the award winning cuisine and superb service that has come be a hallmark of our operation and one of the best restaurants in the southeast. We do offer room service upon request from the Peninsula Grill. My wife and I celebrated my birthday this year in Charleston. Our stay at Planters Inn was a wonderful addition to my special week. We love independent hotels such as the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans. The Planters was just as wonderful! The staff were all courteous and helped us choose dining and tourist sites. The Peninsula Grill was a treat! Ask for Derrick and order the Lobster 3-way! On our next visit to Charleston we will definitely be returning to Planters.

As you enter the Inn, it seems the cares of the day just meltaway and you are suddenly relaxed and pampered. The salon in the first floor stocked with fresh coffee, ice water, and warm cider is wonderful. Rooms are spacious, clean, and there is attention to detail. Be sure to sample the turn down treats. They are made in- house and are delectable. Location is excellent for touring the downtown area, and only 10 minute trip to get over the bridge to the Mt.Pleasant side of town. The valet parking is a definite plus with the limited public parking downtown. Due to other family commitments, was not able to dine in the Peninsula Grill. I'm sure if it follows suit with the hotel, it does not disappoint. Enjoy!

Dear ATW2461,
“A Must Stay”…..is perfect suggestion to all reading our Trip Advisor reviews. Your descriptions and summation offer a candid view of our small boutique property that we certainly agree include a “must stay” for everyone visiting Charleston. As South Carolina’s only member of Relais and Chateaux, we stand above the crowd of numerous lodging choices. We are pleased to read your positive comments and do agree that a return trip is needed to experience the award winning cuisine of Chef Graham Dailey and the team at Peninsula Grill; a dining experience well worth another visit.
Until then, best Wishes and thank you from the all of us,
Bradley Dickerson, Hotel Manager
