“Refined and elegant; a little noisy”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 13, 2008

We recently stayed at the hotel for 3 nights; it was our first trip to Charleston. The Planters Inn is the type of hotel that is almost impervious to criticism. The lobby and rooms are impeccably decorated, and every staff member was efficient and genuinely pleased to help. Everyone also remembered our names and addressed us by name each time we met somewhere in the hotel. The restaurant in the hotel (Peninsula Grill) is outstanding, and right now stands as the best restaurant we've ever been to. The sincerity of the hotel staff extended to the restaurant, where the chef personally came to our table to ask about our meal and thank us for visiting. My only very minor complaint was some street noise. In particular, there was a street musician who would park himself, a xylophone and an amplifier across the street from the hotel each night and play as late as 10:30 pm. It forced us to close our windows on pleasant, mild evenings when we would have slept with them open. Overall, it was a memorable time spent, and we will be back.

I realize I'm a little late in sending this review in, but better late than never. My husband and I stayed at the Planter's Inn this past fall and we absolutely loved it. Our room was fabulous! It faced the market and we didn't notice any street noise at all. The decor in the room was exactly like the online pictures. The staff were very friendly and helpful and we loved the next days weather report that we got with the turn down service. We thoroughly enjoyed Charleston as well and would love to return - and we'd stay at the Planter's Inn!

The facilities are beautiful, lovely wood floors and area rugs, with wonderful antiques in both the general areas as well as in the rooms. I also found its location central to anywhere one might want to walk.
Best of all, however, is their staff. They are warm, helpful and knowledgeable. The reason for this last is obvious: the hotel manager, Bradley, sets a high standard of service for all of his staff. He and those who work for him have convinced me that on any future visits to Charleston, it is the Planters Inn that will receive my patronage.
While there, do NOT miss dinner in their restaurant, Peninsula Grill. The food was superb, and again, the service, especially from their sommelier Dennis, could not have been better.
I urge anyone visiting Charleston, SC to go online at plantersinn.com and view at least some of the reasons for these raves.

Wonderful hotel, great location. The room was nice, very comfortable the only problem that I had was our room faced the street and starting at 6 am on Saturday the trash truck was out on the street for at least an hour which needless to say woke me up. The hotel staff is very courteous and helpful. The Peninsula Grill restaurant site is a wonderful place to eat.

  • Liked — The quaintness of the inn.
  • Disliked — The noise level in the room from outsi

Planters Inn is a great 5 star hotel. My girlfriend surprised me with a weekend getaway for my birthday. The hotel has a classic upscale southern style with a friendly staff and wonderful restaurant (Peninsula Grill)
This a Relais & Châteaux - Luxury hotel, and I was satisfied, but not blown away.
The lobby lounge was comfortable and had coffee and apples. Wish they had tea or hot cocoa.

Room was in a separate building about 10 steps from the check-in and restaurant across a charming flowerbed brick pathway. Room was well-appointed with a 4-poster, very comfortable bed and linens. Turn down service, they leave a mint and next day's weather report on the bed.

Antique table, Desk and complimentary internet.
Room had Jacuzzi soaking tub for 2 and nice toiletries.
CD alarm clock had a nice mix of classical and ambient music.

Room had a public walkway/terrace overlooking a beautiful sitting patio garden area with small decorative pool.

Room faced the street and was very quiet. They had a sound machine, but we did not need it.

No gym, $18/day valet parking.
The only negative was a fairly noisy return air vent that allowed us to hear the HVAC unit (heat at night, it was 30 degrees) directly above the front door.

Well worth the cost and dining at the restaurant is highly recommended.

Just returned from two nights at Planter's Inn and was surprisingly disappointed. Location is perfect. We walked everywhere. We did have a few issues. First, our original room was well furnished and textiles were certainly first rate. Surprisingly, the carpet was badly stained and the new flat screen t.v. had a terrible picture. After a long day of touring we settled in for a nap before dinner only to have the smoke detector chirp every 60 seconds. The staff immediately responded and sent maintenance. Not the romantic weekend I planned as I sat in bed in a robe with a guy up a ladder as my husband watched college football on the bad t.v. I will point out that I expressed my disappointment to the front desk and they were extremely gracious and helpful. The hotel was full so they could not move us, but first thing the next morning we were upgraded to a magnificent suite which we loved.

Concierge was helpful making advanced dinner reservations for us so take advantage of this if you are visiting on a weekend. We were advised by the desk staff that all of the King Street stores were open on Sunday. Unfortunately only the mass market stores are open. All of the antique and silver stores are closed. I can go to the Gap at home, I wanted to see the antiques.
Finally, was shocked by the condition of the sitting room, the main public space in the lobby. The beautiful brown silk draperies were ripped. Not just torn but actually shredded on one panel with the decorative fringe hanging off. Nothing I have ever seen before in a Relais & Chateaux property.

Thank you for you comments regarding your recent visit in November. We are happy to report our cable troubles and Lobby Parlor are both recieving the needed attention we understand was needed and actually scheduled for post Thanksgiving. We hope you have the opportunity to visit us again soon and view the improvements to our lobby/parlor public areas as they are currently under hardwood floor restoration this week with upholstry and drapes to soon follow.

Background: When we visited Charleston in 2006, we stayed in a well-appointed Club-level room at Charleston Place. During that visit, we admired the Planters Inn as we walked past it on our way through City Market. Charleston Place is a wonderful, luxurious, full-service hotel, but my wife and I prefer staying at more intimate, smaller inns (50 to 100 guestrooms), so we decided to try the Planter's Inn this year... we're very glad we did!

Hotel: The Planters Inn is a refined, historic Relais & Chateaux property located adjacent to City Market in Charleston's historic district. The inn has about 60 guestrooms, just the right size to ensure exceptional personal service without being so small as to reveal your every coming and going. The inn's lobby and parlor areas, though small, are comfortable, inviting and meticulously kept. The inn also has a beautifully manicured courtyard adjacent to its renowned restaurant, the Peninsula Grill.

As a previous reviewer mentioned, there was construction/maintenance going on at the inn during our visit in late August 2007. However, we booked the room directly with the inn and they offered us 30% off the rack rate for the minor inconvenience this caused us. We would certainly have preferred pristine surroundings during our visit, but we understand that a magnificent 160 year-old historic building needs to be regularly and properly maintained.

Room: We booked a "Plantation King Room", overlooking North Market Street, in the original circa 1844 section of the inn. The room was very spacious and stylishly decorated with Persian rugs, elegant furniture and a very comfortable king-sized bed. The marble bathroom was nice but nothing special; it was long and narrow with a standard household combination tub/shower (not unexpected at a historic inn). Both the room and bathroom were spotless! Among the many appreciated in-room amenities we received on arrival were a bottle of Champagne and fruit basket (included with the "Relais Gourmet" package). The first rate hotel staff was gracious, courteous and efficient.

Dining: Charleston is famous for its southern cuisine and we had the pleasure of dining at 2 fine restaurants during our most recent stay. Slightly North of Broad (SNOB) for lunch and the inn's Peninsula Grill for breakfast and dinner (we also dined at Charleston Place's Charleston Grill during a previous visit). These renowned restaurants have all been extensively reviewed elsewhere, so I'll limit my comments to saying that we found each restaurant worthy of their lofty reputations. They're each so good that it's hard to choose a favorite, but if we were going to be in Charleston for just one night, our first choice for dinner reservations would be the Peninsula Grill.

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at the Planters Inn, and we'll definitely return the next time we visit Charleston!
