“The Ideal Hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 2, 2012

The Planters Inn is perfect in every way! The front desk and the manager are there to take care of your every need with a warm smile, even when I asked them if they could print 400 pages of documents for me. The parlor in the lobby is the perfect place to relax or have late night talks with your fellow travelers. My plantation king room was large, beautifully furnished and faced the main street through town. I never had a problem with noise and slept soundly in my comfortable bed. The bathroom was spacious. Room service in the morning, while limited, is always served with a smile. The hotel restaurant is absolutely beautiful and serves great food. The bar is inviting and you would not feel uncomfortable if you went to the bar alone. I was there 5 nights and each one was perfect.

Room Tip: Room 220 is the perfect choice--large and sunny

We stayed 3 wonderful post xmas nights. On the positive, we loved the room, expansive 4 poster king w desk, couch, lounger, settee, antique avian prints, overlooking Meeting st. Our initial concerns about street noise were allayed because of the constantly blowing fan (white noise) and wooden shutters. Lovely comfy lounge, constantly stocked with coffee, tea, cider, cookies, etc. Staff overall quite friendly, knowledgeable, but... Now on to improvement areas. First impression was less than average. We arrived 11am, hoping to check in earlier than the 3 pm "policy". We were told maybe 2:30, and they took my cell number to alert me when it was ready. I know there were no guarantees, however i expected a hotel of this caliber to exceed bare minimum. Even the Hampton and Holiday Inns routinely get me in early when i'm on business. We went to lunch and returned around 2pm. No room. We sat in the lounge until 3:20 when our room was finally ready. Late! Needless to say off to a rocky start vis a vis service. Free wifi was woefully slow. Signal strength was fine, it's an issue with their bandwidth. It was so bad that we used verizon 3G instead about 90% of the time. For a gym we were given two options: 1) the Doubletree next door, for free or 2) Eco Fitness a block away for $10. The Doubletree is your basic cramped hotel fitness area with a couple basic machines. Eco is a very nice full service gym, and they let us in free when we showed our room key. (not sure if the attendant messed up, or it is now complimentary for Planter's guests?) In these times where health/fitness are top of mind for most folks, coupled with the tendency to overindulge culinarily in Charleston, i think it is critical that even a boutique such as this provide workout facilities consistent with their brand image. Eco could do, but suggest they formalize the relationship and do away with any incremental charges. Housekeeping was average, bathroom appeared to have been given just a cursory wipedown, lotions not replaced.

Thank you so much for taking time to let us know your thouights on Planters Inn. Being an older " thick walled" building our wifi tends to be a bit slow at times. I'm sorry you experianced the slow connection during your stay.

We stayed here for a few nights on a short getaway and found warm weather and a warm welcome. The building is old and the hotel small. It has the disadvantage of having an elevator retrofitted into the small reception area, making it necessary to pass close to the front desk, or around the other narrow side. The staff deals with this cheerfully, but it is a slightly unusual layout. On the plus side, the parlor off the reception is elegant and pleasant to sit in.

The location is central and busy, but since we requested a quiet room, found no fault with the noise from the neighborhood once settled. The staff were attentive and polite. Being a small hotel, it has a small staff. Sometimes it is necessary to wait for assistance. If you want an army of bellmen to jump at a moment's notice, this is probably not the best hotel for you.

The room was comfortably furnished the in traditional manner- very likely the Baker furniture Charleston Collection. Internet access was available but slow. The bathroom was a little dated with a shallow tub. Better lighting especially in the magnifying makeup mirror would have made the sink area better.

What the hotel lacks in big city polish, it makes up for in charm. It is small, the wood floors in the reception are uneven and polished, the place gleams and the staff is hospitable. It has exactly the kind of look and feel you'd want if you appreciate the architecture and charm of old Charleston. If you are looking for modern eclectic, this is not your place.

We had a fabulous dinner in the restaurant our first night. The place was packed with the city's finest citizens, plenty of well dressed coiffed ladies and good old boys talking at the top of their voices. Food was superb and service was welcoming and efficient. You could not ask for better. I recall some combination chocolate confection for dessert that put me in a chocoholic stupor.

The hotel is perfectly located and provides you within walking distance of the city's most charming streets, best shopping and wonderful restaurants. It is a busy, touristy area but the hotel is a perfect refuge.

Room Tip: Request a quiet room and be prepared for a pleasant view of the attractive courtyard.

Thank you so much for your kind words. Our staff takes great pride in serveing every guest. They really enjoy hearing, through comments like yours, that they have done a good job. Our "charming" inn's location just can't be beat. No question about it! Our courtyard is very popular during the warmer months and glad you were pleased that your room overlooked it.

The Inn is beautiful and it is centrally located in the city. You can easily walk to the shops and the City Market. After checking in, we took a walk to a wine and cheese bar just down the street from the Inn. We had an assorted tray of cheeses and a glass of wine. Upon returning to our room, we were surprised to find a bottle of champagne chilling with a card congratulating us on our anniversary. Later we enjoyed a delicious dinner at the hotel's restaurant.

I arrived and struggled up the stairs with my suitcases. There were no bellboys to help. Having got to the reception a rather surly man said: 'name please'. No 'welcome' 'good evening' 'can I help you with your bags'! I was checked in with no information given to me about the hotel, made to feel I was doing the guy a favour. My room is one of the biggest suites. Bellboy finally arrived and was very friendly - he was from Connecticut... Room very nice though a/c was stuck and I had a very cold night. Ice machine outside makes a terrible noise but i was able to close the door of my sitting room to the bedroom to drown the noise. Dinner at the bar again was good but service bare minimum of courtesy. Breakfast was met by a very curt waiter: no 'good morning' no smiles, nothing. Asked for check and it was brought but I wanted to charge it to my room. Was asked for my room number in a very unpleasant way. So NO TIP! Asked reception to book me a table in a restaurant for lunch. was told the restaurant didn't take reservations and that anyway there wasn't any need. Asked the girl if she was sure, and she said: 'pretty sure'!! She didn't bother to check by calling! In the event the restaurant did take reservations and was packed but I managed to get a place simply because I was on my own! Am still staying here as I write so hope this evening will be better. If this were a hotel without the validation of 'Relais Chateaux' it would probably struggle! Other Relais Chateaux I have stayed in round the world certainly wouldn't give you this poor and unfriendly service! Mr Manager, if I may suggest, just get your staff to practice smiles, that would go a long way: then perhaps even improve on the rest!

Please except our sincere apologies for a much less than perfect stay. Our staff is extremely disappointed that we dropped the ball on more than one occasion while you stayed with us. It is feedback like yours that helps us address the issues and make necessary changes to avoid future guests from having the same experience.

This Inn is a great place to base your Charleston trip. The location is in the heart of the market, dining and shopping areas. Charleston is a great walking city and Planters Inn puts you in the best spot to start. The Inn does not offer a wide variety of amenities and some of the criticisms by other reviewers are valid, but I can't help but notice that nearly everyone rates the property "Excellent" anyway. My only criticism is the cost. Perhaps you are paying for the name and the location, but the lack of amenities concerns me.

The staff was most accomodating. The rooms were adequately sized. The Peninsula Grill restaurant was absolutely superior. As Ferris Bueller said, "If you have the means, I highly recommend...".

Room Tip: Ask for a room away from Market Street as the giant street vaccuum and sweeper rolls every morning a...

We spent three nights at Planters Inn this week on a trip to Charleston to celebrate my birthday. After checking in we went for a walk through the Market and, upon returning a short while later discovered a chilling bottle of champagne in our room with a lovely note of birthday greetings.

We choose the Inn for its excellent location near the restaurants and shops. Our room was lovely and was located on the second story of the piazza, facing the beautiful courtyard. It was delightful to have that outdoor space to relax -- away from the hustle and bustle of the street.

Planter's Inn was the perfect combination of comfort and service. We will return.
