“Most Comfortable”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2011

We came to Charleston for a wedding. We stayed in a suite in the original part of the property. The sitting room of the suite was filled with extremely a comfortable couch and chairs plus a desk .
The room itself is dated which seems appropriate since the property is historic. The bathroom was large. The towels could be bigger however. The a/c worked well cooling the room to my comfort which is 68. The shutters and drapes kept the room dark in the morning which helped me sleep and I did not hear any sound from the street or halls.

The restaurant is first class and the location is perfect to walk around historic Charleston.

We stayed 3 nights in a standard king room and enjoyed our stay very much. While we expected a bit more luxury from a Relais and Chateaux property, it was clean, very comfortable and quiet. It's across the street from the very busy city market and surrounded by shops and restaurants so it was a good location for our needs (tourism). Room service every morning was prompt, staff were always pleasant and helpful, and we especially enjoyed the turn down service which included a bit of pastry from the on-sight Peninsula Grill every evening. Our only complaint is about the restaurant's smokers who used the bench by our (outside) elevator for their after dinner drink and cigarettes every evening, making us walk through their haze of smoke to enter the elevator (I'm allergic so very unpleasant). But overall, we had a very nice stay at the Planters Inn and would stay there again.

We always stay at Planter's Inn but this visit was a disappointment. The hotel seemed a bit tired. The linens need an upgrade - worn towels and pilly, scratchy sheets. Our room seemed to be near a plumbing source and it was terribly noisy throughout the night. And the coffee that we had ordered from room service for 8 am arrived 40 minutes early - we were FAST asleep and would have preferred those 40 minutes more sleep. Coudn't get off the elevator one day as room service had left a cart at the elevator door.
Our check out was excellent - car arrived quickly. Evening turn down was lovely.
Room was clean and the location is wonderful.

The Planters Inn is a very nice hotel to stay at if you want to be right in the middle of all the restaurants and sights near Market St. We have been visiting Charleston every year for the past 4 years and have always stayed at another property (the amazing Wentworth Mansion). This year we decided we wanted to be closer to the action and chose the Planters Inn.

The standard king room was very nice and well appointed. We were very comfortable and excited about our stay for 2 nights. We just got married and have been going non-stop since then so we were most excited to sleep-in for a bit. On the first morning of our stay, we were woken up by the phone ringing. It was the front desk informing us that another guest had previously checked into the room the day before, decided it was not adequate and moved to another room, but in the process had left some of their clothing in our room's dresser. The staff person was very apologetic and pressed that the other customer was being very insistent about getting their clothes back. I had to search for the clothes and leave them outside our door for someone else to come pick them up.

I am not an unreasonable person... I understand that a mistake was made and that the hotel staff was trying to accommodate a demanding guest, but at what cost? At the cost of making another guest feel inconvenienced? I'm not going to hold this against the hotel because it is a nice property and everyone we encountered was nice enough, but in my opinion it's how you recover from a mistake that counts. The only apology we got was during my phone call with the front desk person, during which I was half-asleep. I guarantee you that if this had happened at the Wentworth (which it never would have), we would have been upgraded or sent a bottle of champagne... something to apologize for the inconvenience, but there was none of that here. Not at all what I'd expect from a Relais and Chateaux hotel.

I'm still giving the hotel a very good rating, which I feel is more than fair given our experience, but I doubt we will choose to return to the hotel in the future given the way things were handled. Personal touches make all the difference in the world.

We recently stayed for a quick getaway for 2 nights in a the most inexpensive room (king bed) and it was great. Our corner room was huge and truly beautiful - 4 poster bed, beautiful furnishings and great TV, huge bathroom, clean, turn down service with amazing candies from the pastry chef each night - we loved it! Front desk was generally very helpful and the bag/parking valets were very polite and professional and overall no one was very snooty (which is something the staff at these kinds of hotels display often). The location is absolutely perfect - could not have been better for us right in town near restaurants and the water. $20 per day parking via valet was a surprise but turned out to be okay. For the price of the king bedroom, I feel like this was a great value. I am not sure I'd recommend upgrading your room much more though, because for higher prices you'd expect more like 5-star results and could be disappointed. There are some areas for improvement, but for us, overall these were very minor - beautiful common room has beverages which was a great benefit but the coffee/hot water was never hotter than warm (both early morning or later at night); our room was very clean and did not have a bad odor, but it was quite 'humid' in there even after 2 days of AC and I found that a little unpleasant; the bed was quite beautiful BUT the mattress was lumpy and uneven, and the pillows seemed a little less than their freshest (but this could be contributed maybe to the mugginess in the room); the bed linens were scratchy and far lower quality than I use at home; no privacy in the bathroom for the toilet. We have traveled the world and stayed high and low, and if these items were addressed, I think that this hotel truly would be world class at a great value. Lastly, if they had a pool, that would be so nice.

I met two friends here for the week, and we couldn't have been more pleased with the hospitality! The staff was excellent in helping with anything we asked. The location can't be beat, and the room was superb, with great bedding. Wonderful place to stay!
