5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 29, 2012

Just returned from a 3 night stay with my husband of alsmost 40 years plus our 2 Boston Terriers.
We travel to a different city each year and have stayed in 5 star hotels before, but I must commend the staff and owner on this lovely mansion. The staff were extrememly accomodating from the concierge, wait staff and housekeeping. We felt very welcome and "at home." The mansion itself is gorgeous and beautifully appointed throughout. The staff gave great recommendations on everything we asked about. The Circa 1886 is also outstanding with the quality, quantity and presentations of their foods. The daily breakfast was also great with the fresh fruits, homemade pastries and the chef's daily specials. The dinner we had (3 for 42) was delicious and we even took pictures of our desserts. It was as tasty as it was beautifully presented. As far as the cost, if you stay at other Charleston high quality hotels, consider the free parking, outstanding individual choice breakfast (not a buffet), evening hor d'eovres with wine, cordials at any time, fresh tea and lemonade in the parlor daily as well as fresh made pastries and great coffee in the parlor each morning. You also have complimentary soft drinks and bottled water in the fridge in your room as well as free Wi-Fi (although slow it is functional although I used my MiFi). Plus the comfort. Our Garden Room was very large, with a really huge Jacuzzi tub as well as the huge walkin shower, a sun room with a wonderfully comfortable couch with flat screen. The King bed slept divinely and also had a large flatscreen with a multitude of channels. They were very gracious to our dogs as well, called them by name and had nice treats in bags for them when we arrived and were greeted at our car. We had our own entrance and a small patio with Bistro table and 2 chairs which was perfect for sipping coffee or wine. The architecture and ornate moldings and woodwork is beautiful. The Cupola was a great place to see a goreous pink sky sunset on Saturday evening. It is also a 10 minute walk to most of the major Charleston attractions. I can't say enough about the staff who were great. I must say we have never stayed at a nicer place and can't wait to go back again.

Can't say enough about our wonderful stay at the Wentworth Mansion.
It's close to all the great restaurant/sites (a short bike cab or walk away) but very quiet with
lovely gardens and highly rated Circa 1886 restaurant in onsite carriage house. Rates include afternoon wine with hor'durves at the mansion and breakfast at the restaurant...wine was so good we took two bottles home. Got terrific recommendations to local place for lunch (the leaf) and
dinner (so many options here!)..chose the peninsula grill for it's famous coconut cake. Our
corner, 2nd floor room at the mansion: king with 18 ft ceilings made us feel like royalty with local and southern magazines (even one for women called Guns and Gardens), windowsill lounge and sitting areas, antiques, jacuzzi and glassed shower for 2. Everyone was incredibly friendly and helpful. Are already planning our return trip.

Room Tip: Front corner, 2 nd floor mansion room was fabulous:18 foot ceiling, a wow king, various sitting area...

We had a family reunion in Charleston South Carolina, and we were on a mission to find the best hotel the city had to offer. Mission Accomplished!! The Wentworth Mansion blew us away with its amazing customer service and stunning rooms.

Every room at the Wentworth is special, but the Grand Mansion Suite was to die for ! More on that later.

The Wentworth staff was friendly, professional and spot-on with their customer service from pre-arrival to the day we departed.

I had requested a “piece of cake” for my daughter’s 11th birthday to surprise her when we arrived. Not only did they surprise us with a huge red-velvet cake from a local bakery, but also balloons and a hand-written letter to wish my daughter happy birthday.

Now, back to the Grand Mansion Suite. I have one word only….WOW! Think 12 ft ceilings, crystal chandaliers, stained glass windows, and multiple fireplaces. On top of that, the hotel stocks every room with a mini-fridge with complimentary sodas, water and anything else you might like. Oh, and don’t forget the nightly homemade chocolates. Yes, I said homemade. No detail was missed by the Wentworth, down to the fresh roses throughout the suite. Also, the included breakfast is far more than one would expect. It is located at the Circa 1886 restaurant next door, and it starts with fresh fruit and pasteries and then you order from the amazing menu. You will be spoiled by the staff which includes Betty who worked at the Mansion when it was still occupied by a family. Betty was a morning delight who always remembered that my 2 year old especially loved the blackberries. She brought him the largest plate of blackberries that I have ever seen!

While one might not consider the Wentworth Mansion a kid-friendly hotel. The Wentworth mansion could not have been kinder to our family or make us feel more comfortable. The Grand Mansion Suite is a perfect spot for families with children, because there are no other hotel rooms on the floor which means the only people they could disturb is the front desk attendant.

I've traveled a lot for work, but never encountered a place with such charm and hospitality. If you're on the fence about spending the extra $$, do it. The staff is extremely helpful, and they provide the basic things with your stay that the other "high end" hotels try to gouge you with (coffee, parking, internet, and one step further with the wine, cheese, appetizers, and evening cordials).

This is a very nice hotel, but I think this is more of a 4-star hotel in my opinion and overpriced by about $100-200 per night. The other reviews will likely overshadow this average one, but I think it's important to give an honest view after having experienced many 5-star hotels around the world. Overall I would sum up the hotel by this observation...

The whole vibe seemed as though it was their goal to make you think you were being treated luxuriously in a 5-star manner in a way that limited costs and cut corners when they thought you were unlikely to notice. It is sort of like building a house with old stone on the front and aluminum siding in the back to give the appearance of an old stone home without the cost.

Pros:
1. Beautiful mansion
2. Friendly staff
3. Breakfast, port/brandy/cognac, lemonade/iced tea, appetizers and wine all included

Cons:
1. Grounds were NOT nice or well-maintained - grass was crabgrass, fountain had barely any water, a few scrubs here and there
2. Table clothes in circa 1886 were ALWAYS dirty and reused - we saw this every single morning. They would simply scrape off crud and food off a table cloth and reset. The only time they changed the table clothes was when a significant amount of food stained them. We ate breakfast every morning looking at stains of juice, oil, etc.
3. Staff was too informal and lacked knowledge. Of the 7-8 staff members we met, average age was about 25. Most high-end hotels have seasoned staff and professional staff, not kids saving up for college/grad school as was the case here. They were nice at least.
4. Place was fairly noisy - heard doors slamming, people talking, footsteps above and to the side, etc.
5. Cocktail hour had one red and one white only every day (changing the wines each day). Why not have a greater selection daily - say 4 wines to chose from? Shouldn't cost any more, but gives a greater variety. Also, the appetizers were just three small ones with one always being cucumber stuffed with something. They were usually fairly good, but again - more variety would be appreciated. Should always have a cheese/fruit plate and maybe some sweets. When the appetizers were gone - that was it - no refilling, first come first serve - felt cheap.
6. Cocktail hour was from 5:00-6:00. At 6:00 on the dot, a young man in shorts would come and take away the food and wine. A better service would be to be a little more relaxed about it. Let guests sip a little longer. Don't make them feel rushed to get their drinks. Three nights we saw guests come at 6:05 or so and told that it was over.
7. Internet was so slow - like old dialup speed.
8. Hotel is a bit off the beaten path

Thank you for spending your recent trip to Charleston at the Wentworth Mansion. I greatly appreciate your feedback. I am happy to read that our staff was so accommodating and you enjoyed our complimentary amenities. Myself and my staff are not satisfied when we receive a ranking less than a five. We are always looking for ways to satisfy our guests and appreciate your suggestions for areas of improvement. We do not feel the age of our staff is an issue, given they deliver excellent advice as evidenced by all other reviews. Thank you again for taking the time review your experience.

All the reviews about this place are true. It is an exquisitely lovely place, great rooms and absolutely outstanding service. The breakfast at Circa 1886 which is included in the room rate is wonderful (you have to try the rice flour pancakes!). Also, take advantage of the dinner special at Circa 1886 for guests which is 3 courses for $42. It's a good deal for some great food. The place was easy to find and had ample parking. It is well worth the price.

We cannot QUITE muster a five-star rating, but Wentworth Mansion was largely very good. The mansion itself reminds me of a cross between The Munsters and our grandmother's house. Victorian architecture -- but fortunately the furnishings were not so, being more Edwardian in feel. Expensive wallpapers, thick carpeting, quietly luxurious furniture...but just a trifle dark and dowdy. Our room, #11, was beautifully furnished and very comfortable. I place a high value on service, and I would not say this place was absolutely flawless on that count, but staff members were polite and helpful, if not a little too fascinated with the below-the-desktop computer screen in front of them. Look up...at the guest. A request for warm milk with morning coffee went unheeded; we never received the wifi codes we were promised; ice was not fresh in the ice buckets at the end of the day. But there were many, many small touches that we appreciated: the afternoon hors d'oeuvres, the coffee and Silver Palate-style home-baked cinnamon rolls in the morning, a pre-arrival request for a birthday card fulfilled, the stupendous complimentary breakfasts in the hotel restaurant. Indeed, that restaurant is the hotel's strongest suit: service is impeccable and food is creative and delicious. I would probably fault the hotel on its location, which is not quite as central as Charleston Place or Planters Inn. Its grounds, however, are lovely and hard to replicate closer to King Street. All in all, a nice stay, and we would recommend this as a destination to anyone.
