“Finest Suite Available In The United States”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2011

We have the breadth of knowledge (decades of extensive high-end luxury travel in Europe and the U.S.) to know, conclusively, that we've just checked out of the finest suite available in the United States. PERIOD. As we very reluctantly pulled out of the driveway of Wentworth Mansion, I'll admit to feeling slightly choked up. We have three words for you...Grand Mansion Suite.

What inspires such passionate hero worship? A museum quality antique and art-filled suite running the entire width of the hotel. Beautiful music (even piped into the bathroom) and fresh flowers greeting you as you marvel at the impossibly high ceiling (we're talking palatial), the priceless his and hers Austrian crystal chandeliers (the Austrian was brought to America to install his chandeliers properly), the priceless his and hers Italian marble fireplaces carved by a European artisan on-site, the priceless mahogany carved on-site by a European artisan, the concierge desk staffed 24 hours a day twelve feet from your mahogany suite door that's too high to easily fit in a camera viewfinder; the Innkeeper, Noreen, who greets you warmly like an old friend, and, along with the owners, attends to your every need. The Widmans, owners of Wentworth Mansion, greeted us on three different occasions during our three days that exceeded nirvana. Twice for her. Once for him. That's exactly three owner greetings more than you're likely to receive at other high-end luxury properties. And these people run four hotels in Charleston! I wasn't surprised to learn that they're both competitive runners.

The suite price is just barely within reach of "poor academics" like us. Never has a "stretch" been so worth it! The parking is free, the afternoon lemonade and tea are free. The early evening gourmet food tray is free. The port, sherry, and brandy are free. The unmatched view from the cupola is a must.

My guess is that the owners had to decide between the names "Wentworth Mansion" and "Newport Mansion South." You can actually drive a Kenworth (with airfoil in the down position) through the mahogany opening between our two suite rooms. I'm not joking. Go ahead and measure it.

Prince Harry just spent $2,500 a night for his Beverly Hills hotel room that couldn't seriously be considered to be in the same category as Wentworth's Grand Mansion Suite at a fraction of the cost. The setting and the staff will have you believing that you actually do own the place.

Reese Witherspoon spent her wedding night in our Grand Mansion Suite, and I'll guarantee you that we received the same unobtrusive coddling in the same gilded age grandeur that she did. Staff member, Betty, who has been with the Widmans for 28 years, even declared her love for us! The Widmans even surprised Betty with a companywide birthday party, but she doesn't want anyone to know how many candles were on the cake.

This life-changing experience has ruined us for mere luxury hotel rooms. This is a way of life. Our number of return trips will be limited only by monetary reality. Never by lack of impassioned desire to return to our Grand Mansion Suite!

You're welcome to use it in the meantime!

P.S. Don't forget to count the number of colors you find in the chandeliers at night.

My husband and I stayed at the Wentworth Mansion in October this year. Charleston is a lovely place to visit, and our stay was made that much more enjoyable by staying at the Wentworth Mansion. It's a beautifully renovated historic building with well appointed rooms and the service provided by the staff was fantastic, I'd even state that it was the best I've received anywhere in the world. As the hotel is more a boutique style, it meant that you never had to wait for service or stand in line at the front desk, they always managed to anticipate and accommodate your needs. They also offered thoughtful touches like complementary pre dinner drinks & nibbles in the lounge around 5ish, which consisted of good quality wine and food. There are too many highlights to mention and I would highly recommend anyone to stay there as it was of a very high standard and well priced.

Room Tip: They have a very large room which is more like a suite, which is on the ground floor just off from t...

We travel a lot and this stay has got to be at, or near, the top of the list. It is a grand old facility with a staff that is trained to perfection. It offers a great private view of the city from the roof and all services expected at a top bed and breakfast. It gets my highest recomendation. We will return.

Room Tip: Room 5 is really nice, but all are acceptable.

This historic hotel in Carleston is a renovated 1880's mansion. The staff was friendly and helpful but not overbearing. Our room was a bit bigger than my first apartment, and certainly more luxurious! The windows actually open and you can climb up on the cupola on the roof. The sunset view from the cupola was amazing, especially with complementary wine and cheese. The first floor retains it orginal wooden floors, Tiffay stained glass windows, and ornate ceilings.
The hotel is an excellent romantic choice for a trip to Charleston. It is within walking distance of historic Charelston, near the College of Charleston.

The hotel is great. If you appreciate history, appreciate craftsmanship, architecture and top level service, then spend the extra dollar and stay here.

We were lucky enough to stay at the Wentworth Mansion for two nights. We went to visit our daughter in college, and she became ill and ended up staying with us in our room. There was a large daybed for her, a comfortable king for us. We had a fireplace, sofas and seating for visitors in our room for the chilly nights, a DVD library, a huge, beautiful bathroom, peace and quiet - not to mention the beautiful rooms all over the Inn, from libraries to parlors. The staff was kind and accomodating, offering assistance and special treats for our daughter. We had a great dinner in our room and an even better discounted dinner at Circa 1886, the adjacent restaurant in the stables. I have been to Charleston many times - it is a great city to visit and the Wentworth Inn is by far the best place I have ever stayed - in Charleston, or really anywhere. Thanks to all the staff for being so nice!

Room Tip: They have even better rooms than ours - obviously more pricey
