“Charleston gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 days ago NEW

A good fun place to stay in Charleston. Strategically oriented, you can walk to many restaurants, shopping areas and great neighborhoods. Some rooms do not have windows so we asked for a window room and were quite pleased.
Good service, a good restaurant and art, art, art are their mainstays.
We will return

Room Tip: Some room are upstairs without elevator access so ask for rooms with elevator access.

We stayed at The Vendue Inn last week and after years of staying other places in Charleston, I can't imagine a better spot. From the amazing facilities (room, roof-top bar, dining room) to its stellar location blocks from the waterfront and walkable to everywhere, its fabulous staff who go beyond to provide a superior customer service, this place will NOT disappoint. Stay in the main building as it is worth every penny, and if you can get it, Room 221 is absolute heaven. If you're the type that loves great product in the hotel, the ROAM toiletries are the best. The historic flair and Southern charm mixed with outstanding artwork, delish food and drinks and every convenience you could want, The Vendue is IT! SUPERB stay.

Room Tip: Room 221 is IT....almost floor to ceiling windows show off the BEST Charleston has to offer. SUPERB...

This hotel has the best customer service of any hotel I have visited. Great location in historic district. The attention by the hotel staff was outstanding. We highly recommend staying at this hotel and would not consider another hotel if we return to Charleston. You won't be disappointed!

Beware the room descriptions for this hotel. Our room assignment was way below the quality implied and described online for the price paid. Lots of noise from adjacent hall, stairway and very loud ice machine. Not much wriggle room, though the bath was nice. It met the letter of the description - yes, luxury sheets; yes, fireplace; yes, antiques - but the sum was less than the pars.

This hotel really sells itself dishonestly. The hotel is actually two different properties across the street from one another. The main building is new and renovated and is mainly what is shown on the website. The second property (which is where we ended up) is a "refurbished" but not really renovated collection of old buildings. The rooms were really shocking. There is a difference between classic and just plain falling apart, and this was the latter. The first room we were in was like a bad motel, with stains on the wall and a broken closet door. We changed rooms and ended up in a smaller room that was somewhat nicer but still nowhere near the quality the hotel advertised. Our friends changed grooms twice and luckily ended up in the new building, and they ended up being reasonably happy with the hotel.

We will say that the hotel staff was very helpful. They changed our room, even though we ended up in a room that we still felt was not at all what the hotel represented. They also were very helpful with a lot of restaurant and appointment requests.

All things told, the hotel does a really good job hiding the fact that half its rooms are really dilapidated. We were truly disappointed and will not visit again.

Thank you for choosing to stay at The Vendue during your recent trip to Charleston. While I'm pleased that you found our staff to be helpful throughout your visit, I regret that you didn't have the same feelings about your room.
We recently completed a renovation to our 19 Vendue building, where you checked in, as well as the Gallery in 26 Vendue and two suites, which are in the building where you stayed. We are currently finalizing plans to begin renovating our rooms and lobby space in 26 Vendue this year, which will add some similar updates to what we've done in 19 Vendue.
We feel that our website represents the property well, as we have descriptions and photos of rooms in both sections of the hotel that are identified as being in 19 Vendue or 26 Vendue. We certainly do not intend to be misleading.
I hope that you'll reconsider staying at The Vendue in the future to experience all of the positive changes that will have taken place.

This is a lovely and charming old-world hotel in a fabulous location in Charleston. The furniture, furnishings and bedding are all top-drawer. And the friendly, helpful service is first class.
There was only a tiny fly in the ointment, and I hate to have to mention it. I was there on a recent Sunday evening, and the service at the Rooftop Bar was absolutely dreadful. One had the feeling that the male bar staff were being forced to be there against their will. I returned the next day with company, and am happy to say that the female bar staff on duty for lunch more than made up for the previous night's failings.
I would absolutely recommend The Vendue to anyone seeking superior accommodations in Charleston.

Dear Kathy0625,

We are pleased to learn that you were impressed with the hospitality of the staff and that we succeeded in treating you like family and anticipating your needs. I am also delighted you enjoyed your room and bedding.

While you enjoyed the accommodations, I regret that you didn't have the same sentiments about The Rooftop. I have reviewed your comments with the Rooftop management. I hope you will give it another try during your next visit.

We appreciate your business and hope to serve you soon again!

Sincerely,

Nick Whitney

We spent 2 nights here and were underwhelmed given the price.

The room (signature queen) was comfortable but small.

The staff were friendly and nice (except the restaurant but more about that later). And the nightly wine and hors d'ouevres very good.

Now - the breakfast! this was the worst one I have ever eaten ( and I have travelled a lot). The poached eggs were cold, the sausages cooked/dried so hard the knife couldn't cut in to them - they were like jerky. And the so called heirloom tomatoes were tasteless.

Also, the staff were grouchy and more concerned with chatting to each other behind the bar. Given their attitude we did not complain at the time, we just left our food. But we did advise the check out staff an hour or so later and suggested that management investigate.

To make matters worse, we arrived at the restaurant about 9.50 am on Sunday (the hotel book in our room said breakfast was served until 11 am). At one minute past 10 we saw a very elderly couple rudely refused breakfast as they were told it stopped at 10 am so the staff could get ready for brunch. The couple was obviously confused and upset. Then we saw at least two more couples arrive and be turned away. We told the check out staff and recommended they update the in-room book's. I still can't believe they didn't even offer the couple a cup of coffee, given that it was the hotel's error!

Dear SCarolinian,

Thank you for your review. I’m happy to hear that our front desk staff offered excellent service during your stay. However, I am certainly disappointed about the issues you experienced with breakfast in our Drawing Room Restaurant. Since your review we have updated our in room guest directory and extended our breakfast hours to 10:30 AM. I have reviewed your comments regarding the breakfast with our culinary team and with the Drawing Room managers to ensure the issues you experienced do not reoccur.

I hope that our efforts to update and improve The Vendue will afford us another chance to have you as our guest. Please reconsider staying at The Vendue in the future to experience all of the positive changes that will have taken place.

Sincerely,

Nick Whitney
