“Absolutely beautiful B & B!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 7, 2014

Absolutely the most beautiful historical B&B!! From the moment we walked in the staff wanted to make our stay perfect! Michael & C.C. Helped book a tour, had wonderful restaurant suggestions and places to see! The room was gorgeous...beautifully decorated canopy bed, fireplace, sitting area and large marble bathroom! 4:00 beverages served in the ballroom with appetizers that you could enjoy in that room or go out on the gorgeous veranda to enjoy! Loved our stay!

Room Tip: Check online for internet specials! All rooms are beautiful

Our first visit to Charleston started with the John Rutledge House Inn. Location and setting of property as well as our Queen suite just brought life to a slower pace for us. Concierge desk helped to make a few reservations prior to our arrival, very nice and helped us frame out our stay. Love the extra space of the suite, but just the bedroom itself would be large enough for the two of us. We enjoyed sitting out on the patio in the late afternoon with the tea, lemonade and little treats set out in the ballroom. Our breakfasts were delivered to our room within the timeframe requested, and was a nice service each morning. Breakfast is brought over from a sister restaurant not located on site, so it's not steaming hot right off the stove top, but is nice and provides something for everybody. We loved it and will definitely be back!

Room Tip: The main house has a bit more noise from afternoon tea and people coming and going. The noise was n...

After reading the reviews and being married to a history major, I decided to book two days at the Rutledge House for us. The general staff was wonderful and very accommodating. We were told that our room was on the first floor when reservations were made, but it was actually down a short flight of stairs. The room was large and lovely (no view), but it hadn't been dusted. I have lived in older homes, and I know it is hard to keep them dust free, but it was easy to tell that this room hadn't been dusted recently. The first day breakfast was wonderful (in the breakfast room) and our waiter was excellent, excellent, excellent! We reserved breakfast time again for the second day. When we arrived for the time booked, (along with another couple) we were all informed that the other guests were running late and they would not be able to seat us, but they would send our meal to our room. When we asked how long would the wait be, we were told that we could not wait as it would "interfere with later reservations." So, we returned to our room. When our breakfast arrived, the server placed the tray (with all items covered) on a table and immediately left. It wasn't our breakfast. We called and an apology was given and our breakfast was delivered. Again, the server simply dropped off the tray and left. While it was our breakfast this time, it was missing several items (milk, toast, etc.). I called and again an apology was given and I was told the items would be delivered, but they never were. While breakfast may have been a hit or a miss, the afternoon tea was delightful with a large assortment of goodies. When making reservations, ask for additional directions to their parking lot (off of a side street). We passed numerous times in front of the hotel and the valet spot was always filled. We called and they told us about the parking lot. We parked and they sent someone to get our bags. The another perk is the location of the House. We could easily walk to shopping and restaurants.

Just returned from Spoleto in Charleston. Decided to stay at the John Rutledge House Inn to get that "historic" feel while in town. The structure is truly a gem in a city of gems..however, while staying on the upper floor, room 11 specifically, we went three days with extremely low water pressure and I do mean LOW water pressure ! The staff was helpful particularly C.C...the afternoon tea was delicious and a real treat. My tip...don't stay above the second floor. The water pressure problem was blamed on the City of Charleston..supposedly they had turned down the pressure ? Really ?

Room Tip: Stay on second floor or lower !

Thank you for taking the time to review your experience at the John Rutledge House Inn. I am glad to hear that you enjoyed your stay with us as well as your time in Charleston. I apologize for the trouble you experienced with the water pressure in your room. Unfortunately, the City of Charleston has very old pipes that provide low water pressure to buildings in historic downtown Charleston. In order to correct this problem, we have a pump on property that increases the water pressure at the John Rutledge House Inn. Since your comments we have made adjustments to our pump system and will continue to monitor to ensure that this problem is resolved. We appreciate your feedback and hope to welcome you back to the John Rutledge House Inn soon.

Sincerely,

Richard Widman, Proprietor

surprised my wife with a special getaway before a wedding in Charleston. She loves history so I wanted something historic but also really nice. John Rutledge House Inn was perfect. Our room was beautiful, soaring ceilings, views of the old church steeples, antique furniture, updated bath. The breakfast was was great, we dined in the courtyard each morning. The staff were very helpful but non intrusive. We walked everywhere. It is very close to the waterfront park area, and right in the middle of all the old historic sites. We will return for sure.

Staying at the John Rutledge House Inn set us off perfectly on our intentions for our first trip to Charleston...to learn more about the history of the city. Our suite was right at the entrance to the house and you would have thought that would be disturbing as people arrived. We never were bothered or heard anything during our stay. The house and decor were period pieces that made us feel we went back in time. Our horse drawn carriage ride through the city was peaceful and informative. We were within walking distance to other historical houses that we toured as well as fantastic restaurants. All in all, a big success!

This is a fantastic place to stay if you want to be in the beautiful heart of Charleston. Broad street is the perfect starting location for anything. We walked the historic streets. Walked to the best restaurants. Walked to the water taxi. All while easily parked behind the inn. This walking convenience was key to us feeling relaxed and on vacation.

We stayed 3 nights in room 13 of the Ashley carriage house. It was blissfully peaceful. We originally reserved a different room because the carriage house is pet friendly and we weren't certain that it would be clean. When we arrived, we saw that the carriage house is beautiful and the room had no signs of animals (except a few dog hairs we later found on our luggage). Excellent bed and bathroom.

The courtyard is the perfect place to have breakfast served. We always looked forward to the morning.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
America's Most Historic Inn. John Rutledge, one of the fifty-five signers of the U.S. Constitution, built his home in 1763. Now exquisitely restored, it is one of only fifteen homes belonging to those signers to survive - and the only one to now accommodate overnight hotel guests. History records that George Washington called here in 1791. An entry in his diary shows a breakfast with Mrs. Rutledge. A loving rejuvenation has restored the beautiful details of the home's 18th and 19th century architecture: the elaborately carved Italian marble fireplaces, the original plaster moldings, the inlaid floors and the graceful ironwork. The John Rutledge House Inn offers nineteen guest rooms within a complex of three buildings. One may choose between the elegance of rooms and spacious suites in the original grand residence or the charm and seclusion of rooms in the inn's two carriage houses. Antiques and historically accurate reproductions give each room its own warmth and distinction. John Rutledge House Inn is proud to be a founding hotel in Historic Hotels of America, as well as Select Registry - Distinguished Inns of America and Classic Inns of the South. Guests may leave cars parked on-site for their entire stay because the best of this beautiful port city is just beyond the doors of the John Rutledge House Inn. The city's finest restaurants, theaters, shops, and the Old City Market are all in short walking distance. The gorgeous residential area "South of Broad" begins directly opposite the Inn. A stay in this elegant antebellum bed and breakfast offers the opportunity to experience history as well as the warm hospitality for which the South is justly famous. ... more   less
