My husband and I visit Charleston each year for our anniversary and do not stay in the same place twice. We may break that tradition for the John Rutledge House. We loved it and may have to come back next year.
The house itself is gorgeous and located in the historic district, walking distance to everything. The staff was quite helpful and courteous. We arrived in Charleston around noon and just wanted to stop by the inn before going to lunch. We were delighted to be told that our room was ready and we could check in and freshen up immediately.
The room (#8 in the main house, third floor) was beautiful and modern conveniences such as a television and small fridge were cleverly disguised. The amenities were nice, including the water in the fridge and in the cooler on the back porch.
Breakfast is served where and when you choose. The free continental breakfast included choices of juice, coffee, tea, bagels, croissants, grits, fruit, toast, cereal and yogurt. I chose the Rutledge biscuit with sherried fruit each morning and it was yummy.
The afternoon reception in the ballroom was nice. Each day they served sherry, tea and lemonade. One day they had pecan cookies, deviled eggs and blueberry muffins. The next day the choices were lemon tarts, pound cake with chocolate and turkey/ham/cheese phyllo cups. All very tasty and a great treat. The ballroom also had a fabulous menu book with photos of area restaurants.
The staff was the nicest we have encountered in Charleston, and in a city known for hospitality and manners, that is saying a great deal! I have only positive remarks about our stay and the most wonderful of memories from our trip.
