“Ideal location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 30, 2014

I was looking for an inn or small hotel in the old town area and the Elliott House proved to be perfect for accommodation and location. Our room overlooked the courtyard ,was well furnished and quiet. Stall were excellent and knowledgeable of the city and environs. The location proved ideal for restaurants (82 QS, Poogan's, and Eli's were all excellent but we could not get in to Husk.

The free trolley bus stops about 50 yards from the Inn

Room Tip: Romm overlooking the courtyard.

We appreciated you spending your 8 day trip to Charleston with us! We enjoyed getting to know you and your husband. Next time you’re visiting “the states” again, please think of us – we’d love to have back again.

Had the room been $40-50 cheaper with free parking, this review would be rated higher. The website did not mention that parking garages in the area run about $20 and no free street parking. The room is nicely furnished, but smells quite musty in spite of the dehumidifier tucked in the corner. The bug we squashed in the bathroom seemed to be trying to find a better place to stay as well. Additionally, our first floor room window opened to the wall and door of the attached restaurant (6 ft away), and restaurant staff were moving back and forth directly in front of the window. We kept the blinds closed for that reason, but it really didn't matter because there was no reason for them to be open anyway.

I’m sorry you did not find a true “value” while staying at Elliott House for your visit to Charleston. I’m surprised by your statement that we did not mention this on our website. I’m concerned that you were not able to locate this. We take great strides in informing every guest ahead of time that parking in not included in the rate, I’m sorry this may have gotten overlooked while visiting our website. That’s certainly not our intention. We are situated right in between 2 fine dining restaurants, while this isn’t something I can control, I understand that it was not an ideal view from your room and I’m sorry. Given the location and competitive rates of our neighboring hotels with similar amenities (including no parking) I feel that we are priced appropriately. My hope is that what we lacked in room space and views we made up for in our guest service.

We originally booked a hotel room at the Society House in Charleston. We received a call saying that because of plumbing problems, there were no room available and we were being switched to the Elliott (their sister hotel) At the Society House we had booked a suite, and we're very disappointed when we got to the Elliott and saw the room size. It was tiny!! The room seems to be in need of a good cleaning and touch up. The staff didn't offer us any compensation for our troubles or down size in room. The area right behind the hotel was loud and had a band playing well into the night. You could hear it even when the air conditioner (which made a loud sound) was on. The ONLY good thing I have to say about this hotel was that the location was decent. Management - I don't need you to respond to this review with your comments - making excuses about the hotel or saying if we come back and try another room - it will be better. This hotel is not the best - especially for the money. I would advise to choose another hotel. There are plenty in Charleston to choose from.

While you didn’t choose to stay at Elliott House Inn during your quick one night stay in Charleston, we are certainly pleased that you did! Granted we are not a suites hotel like Society House, but we do provide a free continental breakfast, free bicycle rentals, free wireless, free heated Jacuzzi and free wine & cheese reception. None of those things Society House offers! With us being situated in the heart of the historic district we do have occasional weddings and special events hosted in nearby venues, please know that the City of Charleston holds a strict 11pm deadline. We understand that our potential guests have several hotels to choose from while visiting Charleston and I think the vast majority of the reviews we receive speak volumes about the level of service and product we give to everyone. We’re a great property with lots of character and giving employees that truly care about making your stay comfortable and clean.

We stayed at this inn while traveling up to Jersey. We found on hotels tonight. Got a great rate and the inn was so wonderful and more than we expected. The service was outstanding. The room was so clean and loved the decor. The happy hour was small but if you want drinks 82 Queen bar is right next door. We walked down to harbor for sunset so if you are in mood to walk it is in a great spot to walk around downtown. Highly recommend and will return next time we ate in Charleston.

I did my research and picked this hotel based on reviews. The first night there was a wedding behind the hotel blasting music until well after 11:00. (mean while, we went to relax) Had a courtyard view which the light lights up your room the entire night like it day light out. The young man at the front desk was really great with helping us historical wise pick places to see. There was spiders in the room I was bit on my leg twice while in bed not sure by what . They only give you three choices for breakfast a bagel, cereal or yogurt. Which was all fine. The staff were all wonderful but will not be going back because of room.

Room Tip: There isn't any

I understand that you have a lot of hotels to choose from while visiting Charleston and thank you for choosing us. While I’m pleased to read that the staff exceeded your expectations, I am sad that the room did not. Please know that the city of Charleston has a strict noise ordinance for weddings and city events which requires all live music cease at 11pm, no exceptions. While we were not notified that the music continued past 11, had we been, I’m confident the local authorities would have taken care of the issue promptly. It’s not something that the city handles lightly for the discomfort of nearby residents and tourists in the community. I appreciate your feedback on our breakfast. We are constantly reviewing breakfast options and looking for ways to increase the overall quality of the foods. I’m sorry to read of your spider bite, that’s not a common occurrence in our property that maintains monthly pest prevention. While I understand that we failed you in some aspects of your staff, my hope is that the good outweighs the bad and you’ll give us another try while visiting Charleston.

My husband and I stayed at the Elliot House Inn this past weekend while we were enjoying a romantic getaway. We booked through some last-minute booking phone app my husband has on his phone, so we didn't know much about the inn prior to booking but we were so pleasantly surprised with how everything turned out! The office staff greeted us warmly and was very accommodating. We stayed in room 21 which was quaint and adequately sized for the two of us. It faced the street and had more windows than the other rooms on that 'side' of the inn, since it was an end room. This was both a pro and a con as it had beautiful views and lots of light, but we were also able to hear the city bus and trash truck as it came through every morning. On Saturday night we could hear folks next door at Husk having quite a rowdy evening, but they turned the music off around 11 and otherwise it was not an issue. There is a street lamp outside one of the windows so the room wasn't as dark as we generally prefer, but it probably would have been satisfactory for most people. Next time we visit, we will ask for a room at the back of the inn to see if there is a difference. breakfast was delivered to our room both mornings and although it would have been nice to see different options each day, the amount of food was ample and it was overall very good. We LOVED the location and walked anywhere we wanted to go. My husband, who is generally not picky about hotel rooms and generally sees no need to stay in anything fancy (he figures we'll be out exploring as we travel so the room isn't too important, standard hotel room is fine) absolutely LOVED the EHI and has said he won't be able to return to Charleston and not stay there. Overall, we had a wonderful time and will definitely be back.

Room Tip: We were in room 21 and while we loved the windows and views, we could hear folks at Husk on Saturday...

Thank you for taking the time to share about your visit with us at The Elliott House Inn. I’m super excited that you enjoyed your stay here, and that you do not want to stay anywhere else the next time you come to Charleston. Room 21 is one of our Traditional Queen Rooms, and it is a wonderful room especially because it is so well lit. Being on such a wonderful culinary based street, you get to enjoy the sights and the sounds of what Charleston has to offer. The Courtyard Rooms in the back of the property tend to provide a little more intimacy and quite time. The breakfast in the morning is a great way to jump start your day, because it provides you with the source of the energy you need to get out and explore this immaculate city. If you are looking for more variety and a full breakfast, we are just steps away from restaurants that will offer you that style of breakfast. Once again, thank you so much for expressing your satisfaction with your stay.
