“Fantastic Inn”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 3, 2013

The Barksdale House Inn was a wonderful place to start and end each day on my family's recent vacation. Outstanding and friendly staff, and very knowledgable whenever we would ask their advice on what to see or do in town. Couldn't recommend them more!

My partner and i stayed here for 2 nights in July during a road trip and thoroughly enjoyed it. We drove from Atlanta and found the hotel with ease as it is just off the main road, Meeting Street. The first good thing was the hotel has their own free car park at the back which saved us a few dollars. The next thing we noticed was all the period featurs in the house and how they had kept this to the original as possible. The room was great with wooden floors and a huge wooden bed. The only thing that is missing is a lift as some peple may have difficulty carrying their cases up the stairs although as the girl said, elevators were not invented 200 years ago. Breakfast was a continental buffet with plenty of cereal, fruit, cakes and bagels to toast. the hotel is in a quiet street but right between 2 main streets and only a 15 minute walk to Market Street where you can find all the shops and restaurants you need.

we stayed at the Barksdale Inn for two days. we were a party of 4 and had a room in the main house and one in the carriage house. the Inn has the best location possible and the service there is really great! very helpful with advice about things to do and where to go. The only thing was that the bed in room 8 was a bit too small for 2 grown (only large) people.
the weekend breakfast was great! if i happen to go to Charleston again, i will definitaly go there again. thank you for the great stay!!

Great old house with comfortable beds and space for your things. The staff are friendly, though aren't always at the desk, as they do tend to other things on the property than check-ins. They are so helpful when asked for restaurant recommendations, car park/garage advice, shopping tips, etc. and the ease of access to most of what you want to do and see in the city is unbeatable from this location. The breakfast, while not gourmet, is fresh and plentiful with the best OJ anywhere.

Room Tip: Sometimes the rooms on the front of the inn are noisy from passing pedestrians and service vehicles

First, The Barksdale is a great location. The house is beautiful with nicely appointed rooms, however, the service was basically non-existent. I had to wait for someone to show up to check in (at 3:30 in the afternoon) and ditto for checking out- it should be noted that the person who was supposed to be there was outside chatting with someone. Don't know if it was work related or not. Also had to wait for someone to clear dirty dishes from the tables before I could eat breakfast. That was about 10 minutes. As for the rooms, the floors where so squeaky that it sounded like a herd of elephants were staying above me. The shower had such little water pressure that I could barely rinse the shampoo from my hair. Overall, I was underwhelmed.

Nice place....had a spiritual encounter in our room with a ghostly figure (male, maybe 60-yrs old) who made a brief apperance before disappearing through the closet wall. The breakfast was good..Nice size bathtub....TV wasn't in the best position for viewing...but the room was nice and comfortable..fantastic location.. Nice staff....would be a good property for "Ghost Hunters."

My fiancée and I stayed at the Barksdale House Inn with our two dogs for our first time in Charleston. We went in not knowing quite what to expect, simply knowing that its location seemed ideal. What we got was a cozy inn with lots of charm that was in a fantastic location. Located just feet off of King Street, the Inn is in the perfect spot to access all of the great shops and restaurants on the street. The weather in Charleston was not great the night we spent there, so having the Inn located so close to King Street was perfect as we were able to just head out to King Street the instant the rain let up a little bit. The staff at the inn was very friendly and helpful, the room was a decent size, clean, and nicely decorated. The free parking, being that close to King Street, was fantastic. The wifi was free and quick. The breakfast was nice, and it was enjoyable sitting out on their back porch in the morning and enjoying our meal.

So, with all of that in mind, why give it just a 4? Well, the view from the room of a parking lot wasn't exactly fantastic, the toilet ran a bit, the shower head was a bit weak... little nitpicky things for sure, but things nonetheless that hold it back from being a true 5 in my eyes. Keeping all of that in mind, I would absolutely stay at the Inn again as it was a great value, great location, and charged a reasonable pet fee. If you are expecting a typical hotel, with an elevator and generic hotel features, don't stay at this inn, but if you want a cozy, charming place to spend the night, absolutely consider the Barksdale House Inn.
