“Great, relaxing inn in a great location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

Stumbled across this place while searching for an alternative to the chains which were asking for rates at twice the price. I was in town for the Film Festival which happend to be just a block away. Everything else - like the shops on King Street and the Market are a quick walk away. The room was very nice and well appointed. Breakfast was delicious both mornings I stayed. The back patio and garden were relaxing places to eat breakfast or hang out during other times of the day. I didn't touch my car the whole time I was there, which was great.

I would certainly recommend this place to my friends and family visiting Charleston and stay there next time I'm in town.

We just spent 2 nights at the Barksdale House. Our room was quite large, on the first floor and in the front of the building. The location was wonderful as we could walk everywhere & also had free parking. The back porch was very inviting---quiet with lovely greenery and a bubbly fountain. The staff at the desk was not very friendly---her smile was forced and seemed irritated most of the time. The pillows were so hard that I had a stiff neck after only one night. Being on the front of the house was a bit noisy. The bathroom was cramped but suppose that is to be expected of such an old property--the jacuzzi did not work the first night but was fixed by the second night. Not sure we would stay there again but overall it was okay.

My husband and I recently stayed at the Barksdale House Inn for 4 days. We were in room 9 on the third floor of the main building and really enjoyed our stay.

The positives:
1. Location was amazing. We could walk everywhere we wanted and wished we hadn't rented a car! It's not on a major street which made it very quiet and restful. We also had free parking during our entire stay!!!
2. Breakfast was great. On Sunday, we had a hot breakfast of french toast and homemade pastries. On the week days, they had platters of fresh fruit, pastries and cereal with coffee, tea and juice.
3. Each night was very restful and the beds were comfortable. It's a very old inn from the 1700's, so you can hear the squeaks in the old floor boards pretty well, but it's to be expected. It was very charming and quiet overall.
4. The back porch was very relaxing near a garden area with fountain. We hung out there in the afternoons and enjoyed "tea time" which is provided by the inn.

The negatives:
1. Needs some maintenance. There were light bulbs out in our room and the drapes were dusty. The sink also drained very slowly.
2. There is no main office- the staff congregate near a desk in the breakfast room. The second day we were there the manager was reprimanding a staff member during our breakfast which was unprofessional. This was the only negative experience we had with the staff.

Overall, we felt that this inn was reasonably priced and we would definitely stay here again. We would recommend this to others looking for a quiet getaway close to downtown Charleston.

What a fantastic review! Thank you so much for being so detailed. I used this review as a tool to make some changes to our property. We are moving the office from the breakfast area to help lessen the discomfort. We are enclosing the porch to help achieve this goal. Also, I have made my staff aware of the areas needing attention int he rooms. I am thrilled that overall you enjoyed your stay!

The bathroom was dated and in need of repair. Bath tiles had/have mildew and mold. Dust on large plant that I had removed. I have allergies and would not recommend anyone who does staying here.
Additionally George Street is so noisy that our sleep was interrupted. Continental Breakfast was skimpy. Fruit great.
Admitting staff member not friendly or helpful. As mentioned in other reviews, cleaniness and mold free are issues.
Not a pleasant restful stay. In fact we went to Kiawah Beach two of the days. This is a beautiful location. I will not come back to Charleston to Kiawah and Savannah yes. And I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BNB TO ANYONE.

Room Tip: Don't go unless bathrooms are updated esp. tiles in bath.

We come to Charleston a couple of times a year. We have stayed at the Vendue Inn and the Millhouse. We chose this Inn for a different location and price. Bad idea. The good, not far from downtown. The bad, right next to a frat house or some sort. Both nights of our stay We were woke up by loud talk and profanity and a bonus! Law enforcement and the Fire Dept. showed up to diffuse some situation on the first night, Saturday. On Sunday night I thought it would be quiet. WRONG! Right on schedule at 2:30am they were back at it. No law intervention this time. They must have ran out of booze or weed and turned in early. Our room was on the second floor with a window directly over the festivities. If you were on the other side of the inn it might not be noticeable. Overall not terrible but as mentioned in other reviews cleanliness, amenities, and staff I would look elsewhere for a better rate. The extra 100 bucks at the Vendue now looks like a bargain.

I thank you for leaving a review about your experience. This is the first time we have ever had a complaint about our neighbors, which is not a fraternity house. Please keep in mind that we are in the heart of the city, there is going to be noise as there is in all cities. If the noise from a neighboring house is disruptive to your comfort level during the city's noise ordinance time of 11pm -7am , then contacting the people listed on the emergency card that was given to you at check-in or contacting the police directly is the best option. I apologize that you were uncomfortable with our property.

Ten college friends, with husbands, stayed at the B&B and had a wonderful time over three nights. The B&B has off street parking and is centrally located within walking distance of just about everything in Charleston. The large back porch was the perfect gathering place for our group. WE felt right at home with access to the ice machine and refrigerator and a friendly staff to accommodate our requests. I would highly recommend this place, unless you prefer paying big bucks for a more upscale place. On Sunday we had a delicious hot breakfast, the other days continental - your choice of waffles, toast, fruit, cereal, yogurt - all plentiful and fresh.

Our large group tried to be respectful of other guests - don't know if we were successful, but at least we were quietly in our rooms by 10:00.

I gave a very good rating instead of excellent because it was not upscale. However, for the money it is an excellent bargain.

The Barksdale is very centrally located and has the charm that one would expect from the Deep South.

The main house is great and there are cookies and tea all day long. We were promptly greeted and showed to room 13...but in this case, not so lucky 13. Whole spacious and clean with an amazing bathroom, the bed (the most important part of the stay) was crooked and leaning at an incline. The bed was held up with blocks under the bed and was not at all what I expected from the outside of the place.

Otherwise a perfect stay except for the lackluster bed....
