The museum's been around a long time & it shows it. Would be nice if it were updated. The exhibit explanations are almost impossible to read.

“history in a museal museum.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 24, 2012

Not what one expect from one of the oldest musea in the USA, a beautifull building in a nice quarter of Charleston. The collection is exposed well, very informative and educational exhibited. We spent a very nice morning. The receptionist was nice and patient.

“Great Museum”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 14, 2012

Since I love history museums, it really appealed to me. Interesting information about Charleston and its history, which is long and storied, stories about the Civil War, Robert Smalls, etc. It was great! Would go again.

“Interesting Exhibits”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed September 6, 2012

I would not recommend this place for smaller children, but older people would find this place enjoyable. It is something that you would want to do once, but not again, like a lot of museums in my opinion. It covers everything from the native americans to ancient egypt. I especially found the textiles exhibit fascinating.

“Splendid historical collection with fun to boot”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 4, 2012

Reportedly the oldest museum in the United States, this one, though compact, provides a well-curated introduction to lowcountry politics, commerce, and society. Since other reviewers have accurately reported its munitions displays and wartime history coverage, this reviewer adds that a 19th Century apothecary, creatively viewed through its storefront window, and period fashions and home furnishings are also well displayed and interestingly captioned. Currently running is an exhibit of (primarily) women's fashion in Charleston from 1770 to 1970, in which Charlestonian style is quite apparent. (The ante and post-bellum Worth gowns and the 1920s haute couture are highlights.) The fun comes in for female visitors -- or daring men, I guess -- in the try-on-a-hoop-skirt-and-see-what it-feels-like display near the 1770-1970 fashin exhibit.
