“This Site Needs Help!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 1, 2012

I think the Old Exchange is filled with missed opportunities. It is a lovely old building and historically significant. None of that was discussed in our tour. Alas, our guide subjected us to a very long and, in many ways, erroneous recitation of colonial history, much of which had no relation to the building. When he held up "The Patriot" as an historically accurate portrayal of the battle of Cowpens, we'd had enough.

Thanks you for your feedback. Can you send me in a private email (cokerm@charleston-sc.gov) a little more information about your tour? I would be interested in hearing more about your experience. We really strive to be historically correct, so if you feel that we are not saying something that is factual, by all means let us know. If it turns our to be incorrect we will be sure to pass along the information to our guides. I look forward to hearing from you. Best regards-Mike!

“A treasure for history buffs”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 28, 2012

This was the last building built by the British in America before the War of Independence. President George Washington delivered a speech in the Grand Hall in 1791 when he visited Charleston and the southern states.
The dungeons underneath the building were constructed by African slaves and held pirates and other criminals. Parts of the the original historic wall surrounding Charleston lie exposed beneath the building.
A highlight was a tour of the dungeon by a mature aged Southwrn lady named Elinor who made the history of the building and old Charles Towne come alive.

“Excellent tour on history of Charleston”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 25, 2012

We went in to this tour not really expecting a whole lot for $8.00
(per person), however we were very pleasantly surprised. Our guide was Fin and he was great!!! All the employees were dressed in clothes from the era. Fin took us down to the Provost Dungeon and started the tour. Fin gave very detailed history of the Provost exchange and later the dungeon. Very knowledge and you could tell that he loves what he does. He answered everyones questions and made all info very interesting. Also this is the only place in Charleston where you can see a part of the original sea wall. Very good history lesson. Would be great for children. Tour lasted a good 45 minutes which was a value for only $8.00. Then after the tour you can look around at some items that are in the museum which were also very interesting. A must do if you are visiting in my opinion.

Stopped in here not expecting much but it was a great tour from a very knowledgeable guide and we learned a lot about the history and development of Charleston. Kids will love the dungeon tour with stories of pirates and more.

“I highly ecommend this!!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2012

This was a wonderful museum and guided tour. The licensed tour guides were very knowledgeable and keep the tour interesting. There is both the guided tour, but you can stay as long as you want unguided for $8.00 per adult, less for children. I would highly recommend for anyone, especially families. I probably learned more history on this tour than any other we took this week.
