“A great place to visit in Charleston, right in the heart of the Battery...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 20, 2013

My wife and I wanted to visit one of the many beautiful mansions in Charleston while we were here but didn't have enough time to visit some that were farther out of town. The Calhoun Mansion is a short walk from most of the downtown hotels and provided a wonderful look into the history of the area. The tour was insightful and not too long. The gardens were stunning as well, a very worthwhile place to see.

“OMG was what everybody kept saying”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 13, 2013

Your mouth drops open when the guide opens the front door and you can't believe your eyes. It is a collection of the most gorgeous opulence you've ever seen this side of Versailles--most of it has nothing to do with the mansion but is the private collection of the current resident. Worth seeing.

“Over the Top”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2013

Interesting tour of an over the top mansion. The home, itself, is spectacular with many fine details to be seen/ The woodwork and lighting alone are incredible. The history of the mansion, too, is quite interesting.

This mansion is FILLED, I mean FILLED, with furnishings, art, taxidermy, etc... Really, there's just too much stuff stuffed into the huge home. It does make it interesting to look at but...

My 12 y.o. DD loved this tour. She is a mansion aficionado and proclaimed this to be among the best.

“Wow!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 1, 2013

So many places in Charleston have an interesting story, and the Calhoun Mansion is no exception! Your eyes won't be able to take in enough of the details of this 24,000 sq. ft. gem. Thankfully, our knowledgeable guide was able to direct our attention to some of the most important aspects of the house and the collection of antiques it houses. Glad we went!

“The house to visit in Charleston!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 24, 2013

I'm surprised at the low ratings because this was my favorite home to visit in Charleston.

The house was also the filming site for the movie The Notebook, North & South miniseries, and the movie series Scarlett.

What a gorgeous and beautiful home. To put yourself in that period and imagine yourself living there is unbelievable.

There are two tours: the standard tour is $15 and that is the best one. You get to see the first and second floors. There is a $50 private tour which includes the third floor which right now mostly guest rooms for the current owners' guests.

There are so many items to look at in every room you are bound to miss something. I highly recommend this as a must-see home in Charleston.

Visit the home on a Sunday when parking is free all day on the street.

I would definitely view again because the antiques and collection items grow every few years.
