Owner description: The Aiken-Rhett House Museum, 48 Elizabeth Street, c. 1820, Is unique in many ways. For example, it remained in the hands of family descendents for 142 years until it was sold to The Charleston Museum and opened as a museum house in 1975. Historic Charleston Foundation purchased the house in 1995 and adopted a conservation approach to the interpretation of this important house and its outbuildings.

“Great tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 31, 2015 NEW

An audio, self guided tour of both the slave quarters and main house. Extremely thorough and informative, bringing the period and the lives of master and slave alike to life. This place is preserved, not restored, allowing you to see the real deal as well as imagine what the place was like. Combine this with a tour of the other Charleston Historical Society house, Nathaniel Russell further downtown (full and meticulous restoration done there) for a great sense of the era brought to life.

“So full of history, your one hour tour will be too short.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 30, 2015 NEW

So much happened at this location that you need the guide books to help you understand it all. It's a short walk from the visitor's center, but this should be your one stop if you are only going to tour one building/house.

“Getting the 1800's time period in Charleston, SC”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 24, 2015

The Aiken-Rhett house, is definitely the "house" to see if you plan to visit Charleston
I am a local, but spent most of January touring all the houses, as the Museum offered a $25.00 pass for 11 locations for the month of January,. After visiting all the houses, I found this house to be the best in depicting the time period, which Charleston is known for. Well worth the price of admission. Also self-guided with headphones which are very easy to use and very informative.
Don't miss this house.

“"Traditional house"”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2015

Staff friendly and informative. You have a self guided audio tour which is included in the admission price. Saw slave quarters and well as house. Porch was closed due to a previous storm. Husband thought "tour" was too long.

“Beautiful preserved historic home!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2015

We recently toured this home while in Charleston. This house isn't restored, there aren't any furnishings. This tour is a self guided tour with a headset that tells you the history of the house and grounds as you tour it. There are employees around that can answer questions for you if you have any. We really enjoyed seeing the home the way it would have looked. This is also one of the only homes like this that I have seen that allows you to see the entire grounds and house. We thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it for those who are interested in history. However, if you are looking for a fully restored house to tour, this is not the house to tour.
