Owner description: The Aiken-Rhett House Museum, 48 Elizabeth Street, c. 1820, Is unique in many ways. For example, it remained in the hands of family descendents for 142 years until it was sold to The Charleston Museum and opened as a museum house in 1975. Historic Charleston Foundation purchased the house in 1995 and adopted a conservation approach to the interpretation of this important house and its outbuildings.

“Excellent visit”

This is really a must see when you are in Charleston. The audio guide is fantastic and the staff are wonderful. As you walk through the house it's like travelling back in time. We chatted with Barbara who was extremely knowledgeable about the house. Also Sarah was great getting us set up with our audio tour. Highly recommend.

“Great place to see.”

The historical society did a great job. I enjoyed seeing these houses more than Boone Hall Plantation.

“A Local's Favorite”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2014

One of my favorite houses in Charleston because it is a preservation and not restoration. The Historic Charleston Foundation has done a great job at preserving the layers of this house and explaining to guests how it changed throughout it's history. The house offers a glimpse into the life of the slaves by seeing the kitchen house, slave quarters, and carriage house. I have been on the property numerous times and enjoy the house every time. This past visit I took a friend for a quick visit when we had time to spare. We both had a great time stepping into the past with this property.

“Must visit”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 19, 2014

Step back in time. No air in this home. You can imagine what it was like in the summer with no A/C and wearing a long dress. The tour was outstanding. The foundation has done an amazing job with maintaining the property. I really enjoyed this home. Great gift shop also.

“Rhett Aiken is full of South Carolina history”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2014

The Rhett family was and is a very prominent family in Beaufort and Charleston history and this house is a testament to this and to the way history has unfolded for the South. This house is reminiscent of Drayton Hall in that a large part of it is open without modern AC and somewhat as it was in past generations. One section has been completely restored and has AC but the rest is like you might have thought the South was post bellum. The neighborhood and the house are a terrific historic and architectural tour (audio) worth taking if you love southern history as my wife and I do. Highly recommended!!!
