Owner description: The Aiken-Rhett House Museum, 48 Elizabeth Street, c. 1820, Is unique in many ways. For example, it remained in the hands of family descendents for 142 years until it was sold to The Charleston Museum and opened as a museum house in 1975. Historic Charleston Foundation purchased the house in 1995 and adopted a conservation approach to the interpretation of this important house and its outbuildings.

“Eye opening”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2013

Beautiful mansion in original state. Realistic observation of how slaves lived and served this Governor and Congressman. Gorgeous property and courtyard and an incredible educational experience based on centuries' old living quarters.

“Loved the tour”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2013

This was a great tour with an excellent opportunity to see a Charleston house that has not been restored in any way. Because it hasn't been restored, you won't see the fine finishes or antiques available in other homes, but it was interesting to see the original details and the modifications that have been made to the house over time.

The audio tour was excellent - we thought the portion of the tour that touched on the experience of the slaves was very well done in particular.

We toured the Aiken-Rhett house in the morning on a weekday and found it a very enjoyable experience. The self guided tour was very interesteing and informative and worth the money. Charleston is full of wonderful history!

“Fine example of an old Charleston mansion”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2013

The exterior appears to be in fully restored condition. The interior is preserved, not restored. Friendly staff. Well done audio tour lasting about 45 minutes. All amenities on-site to show pre-Civil War living conditions for a well to-do family in Charleston. Be careful when parking as most spaces on nearby streets are reserved for neighborhood residents.

“Must See For History Buffs”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 13, 2013

There is so much history in the Aiken-Rhett house that any history buff should make it a must see. I especially like the fact that the site is preserved rather than restored. I could really feel what being in the different sections of the house would have been like.
