Owner description: Of Charleston's many fine house museums, only the Edmondston-Alston House (constructed in 1825 and enhanced in 1838) commands a magnificent view of Charleston Harbor. From its piazza, General P. T. Beauregard watched the fierce bombardment of Ft. Sumter on April 12, 1861, signaling the start of the Civil War. And on December 11 of the same year, the house gave refuge to General Robert E. Lee the night a wide-spreading fire threatened his safety in a Charleston hotel. Much like the Middleton Place House Museum, the collection at the Edmondston-Alston House Museum consists of pieces that belonged to the family, reflecting not only family history but American history. Despite the ravages of the Civil War, the Earthquake of 1886 and numerous hurricanes, the Alston family pieces remain in place much as they have for over 150 years. Notable in the collection is an original print of the Ordinance of Secession, portraits, dining room table, gas lights, mirror and exquisite interior woodwork.

“House tours in the City”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

This was a great house to tour along with the Middleton Plantation since they are connected and gave us a chance to see how both the city and the country felt in the 1800's. The tour guide was very knowledgeable.

There is a combo package for tickets to Middleton Place and the Edmondston-Alston House available at either site. Both are properties of the Middleton Place Foundation. Thanks for the review.

“Really interesting”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

Johanna was our tour guide, and she was amazing. The people here were super friendly and knowledgeable - the house was really interesting. I'd definitely say a must (since the Charlestonians seem to think so!)

“Just magnificant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2013

For those of you who enjoy wonderful architecture and wonderful interiors, this is pure elegance. Family member is still living on the top floor of this home. It must have been the most wonderful gala at this home with candles lit, piazza open for viewing the harbor and just fabulous rooms to enjoy. Happily it did not suffer from enormous damage either from the war, earthquake or hurricanes. Well worth the time and price of the tour.

“Great house on a one of a kind street”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 17, 2013

This is a great house with a great stories. Worth the trip. Purchasing the one of the multi venue passes from the visitors center helps combine attractions and save money. As with many in Charleston, the owners roots run deep in the history of the city.

Thanks for the review. The Charleston Visitor Center has a variety of options on discounts. We would love to know what we could have done to earn that extra star!
