“Don't expect a "harbor view"”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2007

Don't expect a harbor view here. We only stayed here because of the harbor view which I even requested on my email to book the room. Our view was mostly of the ugly building across the street.(This does not show on the hotel pictures). Straight out the window were trees and just a hint of blue above them. If you wanted to see the harbor you had to stand exactly at the window and turn your head to see the harbor. In addition, they started construction well before 8 AM next store. They did offer wine and cheese but there were not enough seats for guests and you had to stand or carry it to your room with no trays. There are better places to stay for your money. If you ask for a harbor view don't expect it without getting a spasm in your neck to try to see around the window. I would never stay here again. I emailed the manager the day of our arrival and got no response. On our second day I was threatened with a $75 charge because we decided to leave one day early since we did not want to wake up to construction again and no view.(there was no mention of a charge for leaving early on my original reservation). I had to argue with them about that. There are great places to stay in Charleston but this is not one of them. We also were constantly assaulted by people selling time shares while walking to and from the hotel. I don't think the hotel could have done much about that however.

My partner and I stayed for three nights in late February 2007 because we got a good price on the internet and because the reviews were so heartwarming. This place WAS really nice. Warm-feeling, too. Not super high-end special (no room service, no major spa, and all that) but full of nice touches and nice people. The breakfast was a great start, with a pitcher of coffee. The late-afternoon wine was altogether quaffable. The late-night cookies were yummy. Oh, and the room, quietly decorated in Caribbean Colonial Plantation Style, was pleasant and big enough to hang out in through the tornado (a state over, but the rain was intense). Our room was on the first-floor, but NO noise problems whatsoever. No hidden fees on our bill, either. The late-night concierge from South Africa was sooo nice and pleasant. Outside, Charleston was a walking and eating delight (SNOB was perfect for deluxe lunch) except for the wild proliferation of Bluegreen corporation time-share sharks all over the place who prey on the good will of gentle vacationers. It's crazy and depressing: they seem to have set up shop on every single block in the historic district enticing people with aggressive smiles and promises of tourist information and then asking pushy questions abouty your marital status and pushing the so-called 90-minute "tour" (with all kinds of promised gifts) and so forth. My partner and I must have been accosted by them a dozen times. They have a hotel (they call it a "resort," what a crock!) nearby called the Lodge Alley Inn. It's a front's for their time-share scam: just walk on the other side of the road. Do the world a favor and do NOT talk to those scammers: check out Bluegreen Corporation and its "vacation club" on the web and you'll see that it's the subject of at least one class-action suit and many many many customer complaints. Sadly, they share a little shark-shop in the same block as our precious Harbour View Inn. But the Harbour View Inn is clean as a whistle all around!

We absolutely enjoyed our stay at HarbourView Inn and have told everyone they should definitely stay there. They listened to our requests of having a nice view and the room was ready hours before we were supposed to check in. Everyone was extremely nice and helpful. The best hotel we've ever stayed at! We checked out at 12 pm and when we asked where there was available parking downtown, they told us we could just keep the car there for however long we wanted to! We weren't even staying another night! Great value! Wine and cheese and the cookies and milk at night were delicious! I can't wait to go back! The manager even got in touch with us a few days later to make sure we had a great stay!

We stayed at the Harbourview Inn in early March for our 1st anniversary. What a great place..very nice room, wonderful service, beautiful view. They were sold out of regular rooms and although a little over our budget, we upgraded to a suite and would have been very pleased, except that there was very loud construction going on next door.

They are building a new hotel or condo right next door and it is impossible to enjoy the balcony and beautiful view, not to mention that they started at 0630 both Saturday and Sunday, not a very nice way to wake up, as you could hear the construction in our room. The front desk said that they weren't supposed to work on Sunday, but they were. I really wish that we would have been aware of the construction before our stay.

I would stay at this hotel again as long as they were done with the construction. I left the manager a message, as I would like to express my disappointment that I was not told about this annoying constrcution when reserving a room for such a special occasion, and he has yet to return my call.

I would like to thank the writer for their gracious comments on our hotel and service. We sincerly apologize for the experience they endoured with the nieghboring construction. The exterior construction on the neighboring complex is coming to an end the contractors were forced to work on that weekend and at a very early hour without our prior knowledge, I assure you that this has been addressed and in the past they have respected our wishes and our guests experience by working reasonable hours. I will be contacting the writer via e-mail to discuss in more detail and make arrangments for their future stay with us to experience HarbourView Inn and Charleston without flaw.

The Harbour View Inn is high on class, and its location can't be beat. The management has included some incredibly thoughtful touches -- hot tea and coffee are available all day at no charge, free delivery of small breaktast items to your room, and other fun snacks and drinks are available in the lobby periodically at no charge (wine, Jelly Belly candies, cheese, cookies), etc.

On the not-so-good side, the smaller boutique-like hotel doesn't allow for a lot of amenities that the biggest and best hotels (with similar prices) have, such as a full service restaurant, a bar, and a gym.

The rooms are tastefully decorated in high class Charleston style. Our view was amazing, and we had a gorgeous look at the harbor and the fountain -- but not all rooms feature a harbor-side view. (Be sure to ask about yours.)

I missed having a restaurant and bar on site. But the location and class of the hotel helped make up for a lot of that.

I highly recommend the Harbourview Inn. The rooms were elegant, clean and quiet. The view overlooking the waterfront park and the Charleston harbor were as good as any I’ve seen. We just happen to mention that it was our 10th anniversary upon booking and a bottle of champagne complete with glasses and strawberries showed up at our door within minutes of check-in. This is a class act worth checking out.

The room (and bed) were very comfortable and nicely decorated. Newer hotel with lovely atrium where continental breakfast, wine and cheese and cookies and milk are served at various times of day, along with continuous coffee, tea and cocoa. Staff very accommodating and courteous. Beautiful roof top overlooking the water and city where you can have breakfast. You can choose to have breakfast delivered to your room and choose from a variety of options which are complimentary.Very good and great coffee. Great location. Wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. Can't think of one negative to say except one night the cookies and milk weren't out!
