I think the trick to Charleston is to visit during off-peak times. My husband and I vacationed there in early December, and we had a wonderful time. No crowds. No waiting. It's like we owned the city. The Doubletree was very nice. Good location. Decent amenities. You could tell it was an older hotel, but they did a decent job of keeping it up. Upon check-in, we were upgraded to a suite - free of charge - which was such a nice surprise. The concierge was always helpful and offered great recommendations for lunch/dinner. We did eat at the hotel restaurant for breakfast one morning, which was not very impressive. (You would be better off visiting the Dunkin' Donuts about 3 blocks away.) All in all, we had a wonderful trip and the Doubletree is a good choice if you want a decent hotel at a good rate right in the heart of Charleston.

We just got back from a great 4 day stay at this hotel.
First, the hotel is perfectly located in the middle of historic Charleston.
The check in was no problem, and for those who've stayed at other Doubletrees, you know about the chocolate chip cookie upon arrival.
The room is a 2 room suite. In one, you have a spacious living room with a sofa sleeper, and kitchen, and in the other, 2 double beds. Very comfortable when you have 2 kids, a 7 year old and a 3 year old.
The bathroom is quite small, but it was never a problem.
The service in general was very good. The front desk people were very helpful in recommending daily activities, as well as eating oprtions. I highly recommend Haymans for seafood.
If you have a car, they have valet service for 14 dollars a night, which is not bad for the area.
Breakfast was buffet style and good. Included in our price.
All in all, I would definetely go back to this hotel and recommend it to anyone.

Look elsewhere! We stayed at this hotel and discovered that our room had gnats. We arrived late in the evening, went out to dinner, came back and went to bed. We woke up the next morning and noticed tiny bugs in the room. When we complained, all the hotel did was give us a $50 reimbursement. They claimed that since we spent the night, that was all they would do for us! This is an overpriced hotel to start with! What lousy customer service!

Thank you for your comments on our hotel, and, we apologize for the inconvenience of any gnats that may have erroneously found their way to your room. Incidentally, our hotel is one of only a couple where you can actually open your widown and feel the cool confluence breezes of the Ashley and Cooper Rivers. Perhaps someone near your room left theirs (window) open causing some unexpected flying visitors. Chareston is a semi tropical destination, and, we take great pride and care in ensuring all our guests receive great service and all expectations are met. Usually, our oversized suites is the icing on the cake.

Great location a few minutes north of the battery and slightly west of the water. 1 minute walk to the covered market.

No free internet access in the rooms but is available in the lobby or close to it.

Breakfast buffet was fine.

Rooms were OK and were not noisy in spite of being at street level.

The location of this hotel is outstanding for any tourist visiting Charleston. You are directly across from all of the carriage tours, next door to the market and close to all of the bars and restaurants.

The service we got from the front desk and hotel manager were great. We got upgraded without requesting anything. And, as always, the warm cookie is great after a long car ride!

Our room was definitely adequate for what we needed (which was basically a clean place to sleep!) The bathroom was tiny. We were wishing that they had taken some of that space that they put into the suite to take a little out of the livingroom area and put into the bathroom. Oh well... I don't really have any major complaints about this hotel, but it certainly isn't anything luxurious. It was only about $30 or $40 cheaper per night than the Charleston Place Hotel, but wasn't anything close in terms of cleanliness or luxury feel. While we were out touring one day, I ran back into the hotel to use the restroom in the lobby area instead of one of the public restrooms outside and was very disappointed in the state of that bathroom. There was trash everywhere and it is in bad need of repair (with the toilet paper holder falling off of the wall, etc.) It's just not what I would expect from a downtown hotel.

I would still stay here again if it were cheaper than the other places in town. Overall, though, it's just OK.

As for value, I have a hard time saying that anyplace in downtown Charleston is a good value. All of the hotels are ridiculously overpriced.

Went here for an anniversary weekend. The location was absolutely perfect, as it was right in the heart of the downtown area, across the street from many different restaurants and shops and right next to the marketplace. You were within walking distance of most any "touristy" things your heart desired.

The room itself was very nice, although I had a hard time getting used to the pillows. Otherwise, the accomodations were excellent. The room included a flat screen TV, a work desk, and a lounge chair. Bathroom was spacious. Our room was located in their "new building" which was a courtyard walk away from the lobby.

I took one notch off of value, due to the fact that I got our room almost half off by going through Priceline's "name your price" service ($145 instead of the usual $270). While the hotel was great and still probably worth the normal rate, we really enjoyed how cheap we were able to get such a room in comparison to other area hotels and what they were asking for. For example, the Days Inn was going for more than what we paid here.

The valet service was friendly and convenient, and I made sure to tip well. Parking was a $19 room charge, which is probably normal for that area. The hotel was gracious in letting us keep our car there until 4:00 pm that afternoon in order to get some sightseeing done.

Another great thing about the hotel was the checkout time, which came at noon instead of 11:00. This afforded us a little more time to rest before heading out for the day.

If you're looking for a hotel that is near a lot of the shops, restaurants, sites, and the marketplace then you'd be hardpressed to find a better one than the Doubletree.
