“Perfect location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

We are currently staying at the Doubletrree in the historic district. It is a great choice --clean, close to everything, friendly staff. We had to change our reservation at the last minute to arrive a day earlier, and John was very helpful in adding an extra night on to our reservation. The location is perfect! We have easily walked much of this part of the city (over 10 miles in the past two days) and the hotel is at the heart of it all. There is no need for a rental when you stay so centrally located. Our room is very quiet and clean. Free wifi for HH members is fast and convenient. Everyone that we have met has been very helpful and friendly. Maid service was timely and the room was well made up. The bathroom is large and clean and the towels are great! Did I mention the location????

Why only four stars? The room is much smaller then we are used to from Hilton properties -- even the "larger King" that we booked seems smaller then any we have stayed in before. We get that space is a premium in the HD so we opted for the "larger"room. We were disappointed to have a view of a wall only feet from our window, and looking to the side is the top of a tent in the courtyard. It makes the room seem smaller and darker. Perhaps you will have better luck with a view -although this location in the property has been very quiet. We are in a separate building across the courtyard from the main part of the hotel and it would be nice if they had morning coffee service in the entrance area to this building. We did stop for coffee in the main lobby after a breezy morning walk, only to find both large urns empty. That was surprising since it was just after nine in the morning. It would also be nice to have cold water or something refreshing available in the lobby when returning back each afternoon and evening. This is something we have always found at other hotels and instead we had to venture to another floor in search of vending to get a drink of water for $1.75. These are little hospitality things that go a long way towards making guests feel welcome and promoting brand loyalty.

Overall, a clean and comfortable room and friendly staff paired with the perfect location make this a great choice for a Charleston stay.

Thank you for your candid review of our hotel and its service. I will be sharing your comments with our Team as they are one of the special points you made comment to in your review. As a company it is our goal to make each guest experience a warm and inviting experience offering our signature “southern hospitality”.
A few of your comments were of concern to me which were the lack of hot coffee in the morning and complimentary water service to our guests. As you mentioned it is the little things that matter and I am sincerely sorry we missed the mark. There is absolutely no excuse for us to run out of coffee for our guest and I have reviewed your comments with our Team to ensure that this does not happen again. To your comment requesting something refreshing available in the lobby for guests leaving or returning back the property is an amenity we offer all the time. We offer complimentary cold bottled water from the front desk or at the front entrance door at the bell station. We hope you will come back to visit us again real soon and enjoy all the hot coffee in the morning and the coldest bottled water in the historic district.
Until then best wishes and we look forward to assisting you on your next trip to Charleston.

On a rainy day, I asked the desk for an umbrella. They have no umbrellas. They had not run out. They actually have none to lend. They could only suggest that I travel a few blocks in the pouring rain to get one.

The rain was fierce enough that we are more or less marooned at the hotel. Sadly, our $299/night room was too small for two adults to occupy comfortably and so musty smelling that it was nauseating to be in. We decamped to the lobby.

From the lobby there was no escaping the drone of the front desk lady's voice as she gave every guest a hard time as they too sought umbrellas or to have mystery charges explained on their bills. The bell staff was friendly and could answer questions without attitude. The front desk not so much. Rather than answer questions, she would rather launch into paragraphs on hotel policy. I don't need that on vacation.

We know it's the little things that can mean the big things and I apologize that we were not able to accommodate you with umbrellas. We greatly appreciate the suggestion and will keep it in mind for you and future guests. I'm also terribly sorry to hear about the poor service you received and unpleasant smell in your guest room. I can assure you both have been addressed. We know you deserve better on your vacation and we hope you'll give us another opportunity to make things right and offer you an excellent experience.

Kind regards,

The DoubleTree Hotel in Charleston provided an ideal location to explore the city's rich historic sights. With easy walks to historic neighborhoods, restaurants and shopping, the hotel is certainly one of the best located in Charleston. The staff was friendly and professional. Rooms were clean, quite and comfortable. It is a "keeper".

Stayed here for a conference 3/13, in a 2 level king suite on the courtyard. Very nice, quiet. No mini bar, but there is a mini-fridge.

Walking distance to the historic district, shopping, the battery, & even (a bit of a walk for some) the College of Charleston.

Room Tip: Courtyard king suites are nice, private & quiet.

The Doubletree in the Historic Charleston area is the best place to stay downtown. Minutes to shopping, dining and sight-seeing. The hotel is immaculate and the staff is professional and anxious to make your stay most enjoyable. We will be back!

Room Tip: All rooms are well appointed and quiet. Every room has central heat/cooling. Nice.

Hilton DoubleTree Hotels have some of the best staffs of any chain regardless of price. Whatever shortcomings the accommodations may have are made up for by the pleasant and helpful employees who go out of their way to make certain that you have a pleasant stay. We arrived on a Sunday afternoon to find workers jack-hammering the floor of a rest room on the lobby level; by 5:30 PM they were still going at it and the noise was unbearable even though we were located about eighty feet away. This wasn't an emergency operation, just a cosmetic upgrade, and we were informed that the work would likely last until after 10 PM.....What the???? Anyway, the desk staff cheerfully moved us to a different part of the hotel where we couldn't hear the demolition. Evidently, OSHA has exempted the state of South Carolina from its laws, as at 8:00PM workers were spray painting a clear-coat finish onto the elevator doors without wearing respirators and the entire lobby and first floor reeked from the confined fumes; it certainly seemed as though a lit match would have caused a major explosion. That put aside, this hotel was otherwise okay. David at the front desk made a couple of suggestions for dinner and the next day's breakfast and we went to both places and were thrilled with the experience. If it were not for the expert ability of the front desk personnel to handle our situation, and if this had been our first time staying at a DoubleTree hotel, we might have decided to never return; but the service that we were provided with earned Hilton our continued patronage. Fantastic location in the heart of the Historic District. $22 parking fee per night seemed excessive but was disclosed at the time we made the reservation.

We recently stayed here for a conference at the hotel. The service and staff were excellent , very professional and friendly. The suite was very comfortable with very nice accomadations. The bathroom was unusually small for such a large room with almost no room on the sink area to put various sundry items, etc. It is very convenient to the downtown area in walking distance to most of the finer resturants. I would difinitely stay there again.
