“what a nice hotel and killer location”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

wow! what a nice hotel and it is right next to the market and all the shops and restaurants--
Its a really charming hotel with nice rooms, friendly staff, I had a really nice breakfast and I would absolutely come back here for vacation or business. Also, its a nice touch that hanks does room service and it is super fast and efficient.

My husband and I have stayed at this property quite a number of times. He goes to Charleston twice a year for medical tests and we always go stay a nite at the double tree before we leave. I, too, am a Hilton diamond member, as with a business I own, I travel to trade shows much of the year and usually stay at one of the Hilton chains. This is one of my favorite properties because of 1. location, location, location - just a step or two out the front door to the right is the market and great shopping and many restaurants are also just a short walk away. 2. Charm. I have stayed in the two story town-house feeling suites and in smaller rooms in the back. We love that back building because it is charming and though not that old, has an historic "feel" - esp. the neat elevator. 3. The staff at the front desk is very helpful, cheerful, and can be counted on to slip us an extra double tree cookie! Personally, I can't wait until I get to go visit there again. It is just a nice, comfortable property in a great location. If I had to criticize, the breakfast is a bit mediocre and the breakfast room so-so - but if the weather is good, eat out on the porch in the nice courtyard! Very enjoyable! My husband said to add that it is always quiet and relaxing.

We stayed 2 nights including New Years Eve to enjoy the fun and atmosphere in downtown Charleston. It worked perfectly for being able to leave the car parked with valet and walk everywhere we wanted to go. Very comfortable. I would have been much less thrilled if we had had to pay regular rates but we had a terrific deal!

The Doubletree in downtown Charleston, SC, is an average hotel in a very convenient, central location. You can walk anywhere downtown from the Church Street/Market Street Doubletree. The rooms are reasonably clean, but not superclean. The beds were comfortable. Our room overlooked a courtyard and so was quiet. The bellboys were excellent: friendly, helpful, and efficient. The room contained the usual amenities and toiletries. The shower won first prize for its bracing gush! The hotel has no restaurant, but offers breakfast. Unfortunately, the breakfast food is average: your typical bland, greasy, artery-clogging, sugar-soaked, chemical-laden, GMO-spiked American breakfast. Nothing special. Gluten sufferers beware: no gluten-free food here! And the breakfast room was deplorably understaffed. Two members of staff worked themselves to a frazzle. They were very friendly and as helpful as they could be under the circumstances. Hotels that try to cut back on staff, please note: You stress your guests with indigestion as they empathize with frazzled serving staff! For a downtown hotel, the price is quite good, but that's really for the location rather than amenities.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the courtyard are quiet.

My husband and I stayed here over Christmas for three days (Dec. 23-26, 2012). We booked into "the larger" King room which was located as far away from the City Market as possible. This was important because I had read reviews about the street cleaners being noisy very early in the morning. We didn't hear a thing nor did we hear any doors closing on our floor. We almost felt we were the only ones staying on the floor! We got an exceptionally good deal on this room considering how expensive this city can be so I don't really have any major complaints. It would be nice to have had a free continental breakfast, complimentary bathrobes, and newspaper delivery to the rooms. We have stayed at lower end Hilton Hotels like Hilton Garden Express Hotels where some or all of these "extra" services were provided. I would also really like to see this place freshened up so I would be more likely to recommend it to other travelers.

Thank you for your candid review of your recent stay at the DoubleTree by Hilton. It is our companies goal that each guest experience the “southern hospitality” that Charleston is known for.
With special note we are in the process of refreshing our property to include the guestrooms to bring a much more fresh appearance to the entire hotel. Our estimated finish date is first quarter in 2013.
We hope to see you back here in Charleston again soon. Safe travels…

The location directly opposite the Charleston market and a few doors down from the Planter's Inn and the top-rated Peninsula Grill makes this hotel a great choice for travelers who don't mind rooms that, as other reviewers have noted, are a bit dark and tired-looking. We stayed in a larger corner suite. The bathroom was very small and the tub was shallow, not really suitable if you like to take a relaxing soak. The sink area is not enclosed but open to the sitting area. A very poor feature. On the positive side, the staff was friendly and helpful. Large screen TV's. Breakfast is not included and on the expensive side. On the whole, the Doubletree's room rates compare favorably with nearby hotels, so the location should trump any shortcomings.

I am glad to hear that a renovation is scheduled. An immediate upgrade could be made by considering adding a few amenities. For example, like many hotels, placing complimentary water bottles in the guest rooms. In suites with mini-fridges, how about some wine glasses? Also some plastic cups or glasses in the bathroom area. Little touches or their absence can help shape those all important first imprerssions.

Room Tip: Cigarette smoke may filter into rooms abutting the inner courtyard. Corner suites are a great choic...

I previously reviewed this place and gave it a so-so rating. It was much improved when we visited a couple of weeks ago.

This time we stayed in the Hayne Street Annex on the opposite end of the courtyard. I think this building is used for events like weddings, etc. But even if you are not there for an event, request this building. The rooms are quite elegant, much more so than in the main building. In fact, the quality of the room ranked with much more expensive hotels in town. The bathroom was huge; the bed was very comfortable; and the room was very quiet despite being so close to the market.

As a Hilton Gold member, we got free breakfast. The breakfast staff is wonderfully warm and friendly; some of the nicest waitresses I have encountered anywhere. Their authentic Charleston accents were music to the ears of this Charleston native. The custom made omlettes and fresh fruit were delicious.

Valet parking is a little steep, but the staff seems much more organized and friendly on this visit.

We got chocolates and bottled water each night, a nice touch. My wife and I enjoyed the chocolate chip cookies handed out at the reception desk. I also appreciated the large urns of complimentary coffee put out each morning. Charleston Place charges $2.50 a cup for the same thing.

The Doubletree is right on the market. This is the most touristy part of downtown, with tacky gift shops and overpriced, mediocre restaurants (with the exception of the Peninsula Grill at the Planters Inn, one of the best in town). However, the location is central for all of downtown Charleston. We love to get up and walk before breaksfast. It is a great way to see the beautiful old buildings close up with little traffic and few other people on the sidewalks.

I recommend the Doubletree if you can stay in the Hayne Street building.

I paid $137.00 (the government rate) plus about $20.00 for parking. I thought the value was quite good for downtown Charleston.

Room Tip: The Hayne Street Annex rooms are much nicer than the rooms in the main building.
