“Nice hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 22, 2012

Overall a nice comfortable hotel. Staff is attentive and nice. Right down town next to the open market area and within walking to many restaurants. Like any hotel the bathroom has the usual black mold in the corners and water damage, but a good comfy king bed.

Would stay again

Thank you for your candid review of your recent stay at the Doubletree by Hilton in Historic Charleston. I am glad to hear that the hotel was comfortable and staff was attentive. It is our company’s goal to offer each and every guest “southern hospitality”.
However, your comments regarding the bathroom cleanliness was of special concern and I have reviewed your comments with our Team to ensure that this is taken care of immediately.
We look forward to hosting your next visit to Charleston…

The location of this hotel couldn't be better. It really is, as they say, in the heart of the Historic District. The market is outside the door. Everything is within easy waking distance. But the building itself is historic and grand.

The staff are very friendly and efficient. I was upgraded to a small suite, which was extremely comfortable. The Hilton beds are among the best in the world, and the room was absolutely silent. My bathroom was excellent.

There isn't a restaurant for evening dinner, but there is plenty of choice right outside. I don't think there was a bar, but I might be wrong. As ever with Hiltons you have to pay for the WiFi, but at least it was fast and high-quality.

I can't comment on the breakfast because sadly I had to leave at 5.30 to catch a plane.

I had no complaints at all about my stay in this hotel, and would definitely return to it.

1) Location: As everyone says, the location is ideal.

2) Rooms: We experienced 2 rooms whilst there, & although the beds were comfortable, there are certainly other issues which have been mentioned by other reviewers. Our second room had AC noise & the shower fitting needed a lot of playing with - it was either stone cold or dangerously hot. I'm not a fan of fixed shower heads either but during our trip to Savannah & South Carolina, we only experienced one hotel out of five with a flexible hose which is great for just hair washing.

Our 2nd room had an arrangement where the bath & toilet were together but the basin unit was in the hallway, in full view of the room. This was definitely horrible & reminded me of a cheap student bedsit in London.

3) Staff: Very friendly. One point though: We were awakened one morning by a loud warning/loudspeaker in the room reporting a fire in the building & told to make our way to the nearest exit. We dressed quickly & left the room, finding a security man on his radio resetting the lift. It turned out a guest had burnt their toast in the dining room which had set off the fire alarms. Of course, we do appreciate the alarm system is functioning well, but we had no follow up from any staff at all or any further announcement & had to approach the reception to ask what was going on & could we stand down...? I wondered what would have happened in a real emergency. Another couple on our floor made similar comments.

4) Food: Only had breakfast. The first couple of mornings, the scrambled eggs were completely dried up & sticking to the warmer. The rest was the usual fare we had experienced in other (less expensive) hotels. Coffee was the stewed & weak "Kona" type coffee (If there's one thing managment might consider changing, this would certainly top my list)

5) General experience: Sorry but we did expect a more luxurious experience.......

Room Tip: Can't recommend the rooms with separate washbasin across the hallway

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights in the aftermath of hurricane Sandy. We found the staff excellent across the board and the central location made it so easy for us to explore this wonderful town.
We had a junior suite which was on two levels with a homely feel to it. The breakfast was well organised and the friendly nature of the people in this part of the USA made it so easy for us. We just took the continental breakfast as we had been cruising for 12 days and didn't really need to eat that much! It was good .
The front desk helped us make restaurant reservations and gave us good advice.
If we return to Charleston we would definately stay at the Doubletree again

Awesome Time

We stayed at the Doubletree in the Historic Charleston area. Literally, the hotel is right across the street from the old vegetable market which has been repurposed as a souvenir shopping area. But, what is awesome is the hotel proximity to all the living museum houses, rainbow row, and the battery to name a few. The hotel design is to emit the charm and sophistication that visitors expect from a hotel in the historic destination city. When you walk in the two-story lobby, you are reminded of the southern mansions that once lined the streets of this historic area. The hotel’s color scheme is reminiscent of the southern mansion aesthetic, with its rich color scheme of reds, gold’s, and blues, its period furnishings, lighting, and oriental style carpeting transforming you back to days gone by. Our guestroom was up to date and refreshed. We understand the hotel is far into their refreshment project. We have nothing bad to say about our room as it was perfectly appointed and immaculately clean and well maintained!
Since parking is a premium we chose valet parking which was reasonably priced and besides the valet staff did everything for us from taking our luggage out of the car and taking it up to the room to getting ice for our beverages.
We ate are evening meals at Hank’s Seafood restaurant right across the street from the hotel. A must do for anyone visiting the city. Hank’s restaurant reminds you of an old fish house with an incredible raw bar. I would say the best I have ever experienced. On our second night we ventured down to the Peninsula Grill for a world class dining experience. Peninsula Grill is a seamless marriage of cosmopolitan accents and Charleston gentility.
We can’t wait for our return visit…

Stayed at Doubletree because other more interesting properties were sold out. Conventions. Was expecting a little more effort to be made by Doubletree in the historic district. What I found was an ordinary room off of an ordinary hallway in a very ordinary looking hotel. Bed was comfortable, bathroom less than average. Fan and light came on at the same time, making a noisy sound every single time used the bathroom. Tiny area, tiny sink. Tub and shower were fine. Again, nothing special. For 279.00 a night PLUS TAX etc, I was expecting more. The fan noise from the bath could be heard from OTHER rooms. Was working briefly in my room and TWO different fans were on at the same time so it pulsed--the noise was so distracting I had to wait till later to work. One night someone had their fan on all night. Breakfast was great with a lot to choose from for 14.95. Wait staff ALL very professional, attentive. Felt spoiled by waitress, Letrell. Front desk staff professional and friendly. One female desk staff helped me for a long time to print out my boarding pass. It wasn't working, she was patient and worked until it printed. Valet eager to help with cab to the airport and luggage. Cleaning staff always had a Hello, Good Morning for me when I went by. Location is excellent. Easy walk to just about everything. No need for a rental car.

To start off, this hotel is in the perfect location. It is right next to the market and tons of restaurants, close to nightlife, and easy to get to and leave if you are driving to other nearby locations during your stay. The staff was very friendly (can't forget about the famous Doubletree cookies at check in) and helpful with suggestions around town. The rooms we got were bi-level suites with a living room and kitchenette on the first floor, and bedroom and bathroom upstairs. The rooms were a little outdated but absolutely fine for our needs. One negative is the bathroom is pretty small. The other negative, which is not totally the hotels issue, but since they work along with them is the taxi service. They have an onsite taxi operator from the company who is supposed to set up the rides for you, but he is very very unorganized and sketchy with answers, and try to charge your more than double what it should be. We just walked over to the market and got a cab from there. Overall, the staff was awesome and fulfilled any requests we had, and the locations is the best you can get in the city.
