“Wonderful place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 5, 2012

During the months of February and March 2012, our family had a sibling hospitalized at MUSC - Medical University of South Carolina. We spent over 3 weeks at this hotel location and could not have been happier. The staff was amazingly accommodating, thoughtful and helpful. We traveled back and forth at odd hours during this period. They were very helpful. The hotel shuttle is free of charge to go over to the hospital campus.

It was helpful to know we had a comfortable hotel to come back to after long days and nights at the hospital. They also offer a reduced rate (with documentation) for families of patients. Because our stay was so long, this was very much appreciated.

The hotel location is quite convenient to the historic area of Charleston. For those who like to walk, it is only about a mile or so to shops, restaurants and other sightseeing opportunities. The hotel offers a shuttle to these areas too for a small fee.

The hotel restaurant only offers breakfast which can be a little inconvenient but there are so many wonderful restaurants nearby that it is better to venture out anyway.

I'm hoping not to travel to Charleston again soon but if I do, I will definitely choose to stay here again. The staff made our challenging situation a bit easier to bear. Thank you so much!!

We have stayed at this Courtyard hotel numerous times when visiting Charleston over the past 10 years and have always had a very pleasant experience. As others have noted, it can be a bit confusing to get to at first if you are not familiar with Charleston, but GPS units generally get it right and once you figure out the turn/merge/turn (or u-turn, depending on direction you approach), it is not a problem. Charleston streets all over the peninsula can be quite challenging! It is best to have a car if you are staying here, though, because it is not within walking distance of the historic district. There are several public parking garages downtown (often not obvious, due to historic district ordinances which require them to "blend in") so be sure to find them on the city map and plan accordingly when driving downtown. Street parking at meters is available but very difficult to find open. (There are several nice - though usually more costly - hotel options in the downtown area, including another Courtyard, but be aware that they usually charge an additional daily fee of $12-25/day for parking.) This Courtyard is on the Ashley River waterfront next to the marina and some rooms have nice river or marsh views (we actually prefer the marsh side). The city view rooms are not noisy, even though they do face the highway side, but you are mostly looking at the numerous medical center buildings or other hotels. It is too far from downtown to see the postcard views you associate with Charleston. The hotel has been renovated and is nicely decorated. The beds are comfortable but the seemingly fluffy pillows collapse to very thin. Fortunately, they give you extras. Staff is very pleasant and helpful with advice for tours, dining, etc. There is sufficient FREE parking on-site, mostly covered. The corner rooms are larger and top floor has high ceilings, too. Some rooms have small balconies with chairs which allow you to enjoy the breeze off the water in nice weather (especially enjoyed this on marsh side). Rooms are generally very quiet, although we did have some minor noise issues when we were in a room with adjoining-room doorway. (We will definitely avoid that in the future when making reservations.) Free wi-fi is available and you don't have to go through logging in again every time you wish to use it. If you plan to spend much time at the beaches, you may wish to stay at a hotel closer to one of the barrier islands where the public beaches are located. Check for special rates (AAA, etc) when making reservations.

This is one of the best opinions I've seen! We loved to read and share this with the team and Thank you so much! Ah yes, to be in a old historic city with many narrow one way streets. It's a challenge for everyone of us to get around but myself and our 20 year Mayor will not change a thing and that's what I love about historic Charleston!

Nice hotel..public rooms and spaces are the nicest...found rooms to be small and bathrooms outdated. Sink area was very small. But the outdoor area around pool was great...comfy furniture, umbrellas, nice view. Good front desk service...a problem with our initial room was remedied quickly. Nice breakfast restaurant with good service and good food. Elevators need some sprucing up...first impression in ride up from parking garage was not good...but lobby....hallways...bar area very nicely done.
Despite smaller rooms we would stay again...had a balcony with nice water view, chairs and table.

We are the closest hotel to the hospital with free shuttle service to and from during the day. We care for all of our guests and pay special attention to those who come only to care for their loved ones.

Ok, so the place is just fine. Just fine. Way nicer than many I've stayed at. The lobby is nice, the fact there's a bar onsite is a lovely perk, and the staff was very friendly.
However, it's a little bit difficult to get to and nothing is within walking distance. If you're going to go to beautiful, historical Charleston, stay IN Charleston proper. The difference is inumerable. Cab fare from downtown for 2 miles was around $12, so if you plan on drinking, you might as well just up your hotel a few bucks!
The rooms are lovely and comfy. It's a little damp, and you can tell the place was getting run down before the renovation. However, it's now up to par. The beds are comfy, decorations are lovely and cozy, and it's overall very pleasant. I just wish I had a budget to squeeze an extra $30 or so a night, and could have stayed IN town and just wandered as I pleased.

Room Tip: Ask to be on a floor higher than 1. The bar isnt loud, but all the people in and out can be.

I've stayed in this hotel once before, and repeated a visit in February. The Courtyard is a solid choice for Charleston if you want to have at least a "connection" to being on the waterfront.
The rooms are being renovated and are standard Courtyard fare with comfortable beds, good, clean furnishings, fridge and microwave in room with standard, average bathrooms. Room types vary a good bit, so be careful that you book what you prefer if that matters to you. Standard rooms offer only the tiniest of balconies with only a partial water view, while corner rooms are much larger. Water view rooms have nice balconies with rocking chairs.

Though it's true that there is virtually NOTHING within walking distance around the hotel, and you're surrounded by roads and overpasses, one right turn on Lockwood Dr., which turns into Broad Street, and you're in the heart of historic Charleston in two minutes. That's less time than it would take you to drive 6 blocks on Meeting St.! The location at the base of the James Island Connector also makes access to Folly Beach and all points west of the Charleston peninsula very easy. And parking is free- a rarity in Charleston. The breakfast, while not included in most rates, is good, and the breakfast room overlooks the Ashley River and Charleston Marina.

The outside decks and patios are quite nice, dotted with rocking chairs and comfortable seating areas to enjoy the waterview. When I was there in the summer, the pool was always really busy with families, but outside was almost empty on a chilly February weekend.

So if you're in town on business or for a long weekend, and are OK knowing that you'll need to drive just a few minutes to wherever you need to be in Charleston, the Courtyard Waterfront is a great option.

This was a return trip to Charleston and a stay at the Courtyard Waterfront. The hotel is very clean and they have recently updated all of the rooms which are very comfortable. Staff is friendly and courteous. Especially helpful was Eddie, the concierge, who knows just about everything in Charleston and has great recommendations for restaurants and sightseeing.

Room Tip: Nice view overlooking the harbor

We have stayed at this hotel on two occasions and found the staff to be friendly and courteous on both occasions. The hotel is clean and they are in the midst of renvoating the rooms. They are doing it a wing at a time so there is very little evidence of it to the guests -- we were not inconvenienced at all. They are within sight of the Medical University of South Carolina and have special rates for travellers in town for a hospital appointment -- as we have been. They have a breakfast buffet that is very good or you may order from the menu. At the front desk, two books have been compiled of menus from throughout the city to help you select a place to eat. One of the binders contains menus from the fancier places, while the second contains menus for others that are also very good but not as costly. The hotel is beside the marina on the Ashley River and has a pool, jacuzzi and a small gym available for guests. Rooms are equipped with a TV, fridge, microwave, iron and ironing board, and a hair dryer. Wi-fi is also free throughout the hotel. We will continue to patronize this hotel and I can recommend it to you without reservation.
