“Francis Marion Hotel - Christmas”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 26, 2012

The rooms are nice for an older/historic hotel. The beds are great. However, the bathrooms are really small, but functional. We spoke with the concierge several times...she was very friendly and most helpful, the best I've met in a long time. We used some of their lovely public spaces, decorated nicely for the holiday, for our Christmas party and that was great. I would recommend this hotel to my friends and family.

Room Tip: Make sure to pay for a room with a view. Non-view rooms look at the roof. A view of the lighted pa...

“Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 23, 2012

Smaller room but for the price SO worth it. We stayed one night..saw the lights on James Island (we loved it)....roasted marshmallows and had a blast. We went to some amazing restaurants, Oku...love the buns and the jazzmanian devil is the best drink ever. The kids loved the pizza place down he road and glazed for breakfast. Fun stay...we love Charleston!

“Birthday weekender”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 22, 2012 via mobile

The hotel was prefect for our weekend birthday trip. It is located perfectly in Charleston. Check in was a breeze, the parking deck was easy to find and the staff were very friendly. Upon check in the first thing we noticed was the beautiful view of the Charleston harbor. The beds were super comfortable. The bathroom was tiny but not a problem. The next morning we decided to have a massage at the Adogio spa located in the hotel. We also had a wonderful experience there. Overall, I would highly recommend this hotel.

“Anniversary Weekend”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

My wife and I spent our anniversary weekend in Charleston and stayed at the historic Francis Marion Hotel. It was a nice place to stay, although on Friday night we were awakened by what sounded like a party in the room beside us at around 12:30 AM. My wife called the front desk and complained. It sounded like someone came up, but within a few minutes, the noise returned. It continued until about 4:00 AM and we called again, but no one seemed to come this time. Not much sleep that night. When we returned to the room on Saturday night, there were several police cars with officers in the lobby looking for someone. It seems on of the guests at a wedding rehearsal party was threatening to fight someone or something and they couldn't find him. Needless to say, you probably won't to find out how many wedding groups they are hosting. The presence of partying young people doesn't always make for a restful weekend. Luckily, it was quiet on the 11th floor on Saturday night, so we were rested for our trip home on Sunday.

We appreciate you taking the time to share your experience on Trip Advisor. I am so sorry that our other guests allowed for your stay not to be as enjoyable as it should have been. I will share your comments with our Managment team, so they can make sure our overnight team is handling noise complaints so that they do not disturb our other guests. I hope that you will still give us a second chance next time you are in Charleston. Happy Anniversary!

“BEAUTIFUL BUILDING. FANTASTIC SERVICE”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2012

My husband and I chose Charleston as the destination for our 25th Wedding Anniversary. We chose the Francis Marion Hotel because of a combination of location, reviews, and pricing. We booked a Francis Marion suite and requested a high floor and early check-in/late check-out. The Front Desk Manager, Jesse, upgraded us to a Penthouse Suite and when we arrived in the room we found a bottle of chilled sparkling wine and a platter of chocolate covered strawberries. I had requested tea in the room, and sure enought it was there. We were unable to check in early, but the room was ready by the time we returned from out culinary tour (highly recommend). We were also extended a complimentary late checkout on our last day (2 p.m.)
The hotel is centrally located, just steps away from one of the free trolley stops, which makes it convenient to just about everything. Parking (with in & out privileges) is available in an adjacent parking structure for $14 a day - which we all know is a steal. Unless you are planning trips further afiield (which we did), I would stay leave the car at home. It is easy to get around on the free trolley system and taxis are available although somewhat unregulated. Be sure to get a price before you start your journey!
Back to the hotel - as mentioned in other reviews, this is not the newest or fanciest hotel, but the beautiful building and old time charm were exactly what we were looking for.
The room we stayed in was extremely large with a full kitchen and living room, two en-suite bedrooms (one king & on queen) and two large bathrooms. The furnishings were comfortable and everything was clean.
We did encounter a couple of problems. The major one was that the hot water was not working on our first morning. We reported this to the front desk and by the time we returned later in the day, it was repaired.
Also, the safe in our closet was locked. Again this was repaired during our absence.
Regardless of these issues, we were more than happy with our stay at the Francis Marion. Literally everyone we encountered was friendly, helpful, respectful, knowledgeable, and provided fantastic service. That alone made our stay extraordinary. We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to our family and friends.
