In its favour, the Rhett House inn is a lovely old building with a beautiful veranda. It has nice antiques and our room and bathroom were clean. Check in was easy and friendly.
However we were greatly disappointed on a number of counts.
1. Our room was very scruffy and in need of renovation (room 3). The paintwork was peeling and tired and several of the glass window panes were broken.
2. The room was very dimly lit and stuffy and the ceiling fan was on its last legs. It looked as if it was hanging on by a thread and could fall at any moment, it made a nasty noise all night and did not help cool the warm room. Obviously the room has no air con as it is old, but we couldn't open the windows because of the broken panes and the midgies/mosquitoes outside.
3. As it was stuffy and as my husband has tinitis we asked for a small electric fan to plug in. Nothing came of our request and noone bothered to tell us they couldn't get a fan. At $240 plus tax a night, I would expect someone to go out and buy one for $10 from Walmart if there isn't one in the hotel anywhere. In fact we would have bought one ourselves had we realised this would be too difficult for the hotel manager, but by the time we returned from dinner it was too late.
4. There are verandas on the ground floor and the 2nd floor, so it is a little disconcerting trying to use the toilet with someone taking afternoon tea right next to you with just a thin window pane and an ill fitting blind between you and them.
We've stayed in lots of inns and paid similar prices or less elsewhere for pleasant rooms and touches of luxury. By contrast this felt like staying in a worn out old people's home. The hotel needs to seriously consider a re-furb. We come from the UK where lots of old buildings are used as hotels and inns and we think the owners of the Rhett house inn are cashing in on its heritage but not delivering a high enough standard of accomodation.
We are very sorry we wasted our money staying there and were very tempted to call it quits, cut our losses and go and stay in the air conditioned fresh bright comfort inn on the outskirts of town. In the end we decided we'd already spent enough and weathered it for the night.
Our advice to others - stay in a nice inn in Charleston instead.
