“What's not to love?”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 25, 2013

This campground is in a magificient setting. East drive from I95 through Beaufort which in a nice little city with everything you could possibly need. The park is away from all that commercialism and right on the ocean. The campground staff is mostly volunteer and they are super friendly and helpful. The sites are large and for the most part private. We've stayed at three different sites. #182 is not easy to get into, but we did it! I like to bring a can of bug spray and do the campsite before we hang out around the fire because it can be buggy, but not so bad that it drives you inside. The beach is a short walk and last year in March we swam. This year it was too cold. The beach is beautiful because it has a natural look. Lots of old trees and interesting stuff! The dogs are allowed which is wonderful. A visit to the lighthouse is a must! We rode our bikes all over and had a wonderful time.

My Wife and I just took our 5 yr old son for a weeks stay at this wonderful campground for his march break. The only complaint I have was out of anyones control, it was a little cold, but at least that kept the mosquitoes at bay. We camped in site 167 which was right in back, sheltered from the endless winds that were going on the beach. The site was beautiful and well cleaned before we arrived. Check in was a breeze...I told them my name and campsite, they gave me the lowdown on the happenings, and we were off to set up.

The beach was magnificent, a little windy however. You can walk for miles looking for seashells, sharks teeth, etc... The difference between high tide and low tide is phenomenal, I took pictures to show all my friends lol.

We journeyed around to see the various sights on hunting Island and were not dissapointed (although we didnt see much wildlife, most likely due to little mans habit of always talking lol). The light house was amazing to see and full of historical facts (for those travelling with kids, they must be 44 in. to climb it, little man couldnt:-( )

Prices for wood at the camp store are rediculous...so I went back to Saint-Helena's Island and found this place that sold palm trees and they loaded up my trunk with wood for 20 bucks (I have an s.u.v. so thats alot of wood).

All in all its a great place to stay and we are looking at making this an annual trip for now on.

Can't wait till next years trip!!!

Spent 5 nights at the Campground, had a wonderful time. The staff/ volunteers were very friendly and helpful and the site we had (127) was very private. The other sites were somewhat more open but were closer to the restroom/ showers and the beach. My only disappointment was the restroom/ showers, they need work to say the least, the design is dated. Showers were gender specific,(in each restroom)so you had to wait for a stall of your gender. As opposed to a private stall everyone could use, separate from the restrooms like Ontario Parks have. The cleanliness of the restrooms was also an issue along with the lack of towels/ hand driers in the restrooms. The rest of the park was very well maintained and the campground store offered most things you would need. Although the park is ALCOHOL FREE, if you kept it concealed and behaved like an adult, it wasn't a problem !!

We went here with the grandkids and daughter and had a wonderful day.

the lighthouse was real cool, and I got some nice photos. the ground around the lighthouse have a great story about them, making the stop more interesting. Then there is the beach, which the kids just loved.

On the road heading out here, we saw one of the boats used in the movie Forrest gump and we were told that the movie GI Jane with Demi Moore was partly filmed at the state park.

Room Tip: We didn't stay at any of the camp sites, as our daughter lives in Beaufort, but they did look ve...

This was our first visit to the Hunting Island State Park Campground in Beaufort, SC. We decided to take our newly purchased RV Van for our first Winter Getaway. Our original intent was just to get out of New England a couple weeks during the Winter to break-up the deep setted cold.
We took the coastal route from Boston to South Carolina; visiting the Outer Banks on our way down. Great scenic route.
Our experience at the island campground was fabulous. We stayed in a wooded campsite that was a short wal to the beach (a gorgeous, white sand area). Everyday we walked and visited new areas on the island. There are plenty of trails and things to see. we are both in our 60's and met several other travelers who were ALL very nice. We camped the weeks prior to scholl vacation and there were very few children at the campground. If you have kids, you're probably better off going during the Summer or a school vacation. For us, this was a great experience.

This state park is wonderful. We stayed for two nights on our way to Florida. We stayed in site #6. It is a pull through, but a very large site looking right at the Atlantic Ocean. Close enough to the office to have internet at the site. Dog friendly beach, great to walk on.

This was a great get away for a few days. Beautiful location, great amenities, well kept, and awesome nature. I highly recommend this place to anyone who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle of life. Great hideaway!
