My wife and I stopped in Beaufort, SC during our recent vacation to see our second youngest and his wife who have lived there for almost a year now. Since we travel with two small Chihuahua dogs, we didn't have very many choices when it came to motels in Beaufort, SC. Since the TripAdvisor ratings seemed to be decent and the motel website showed "Pet Accommodation: 20.00 USD Per Night Pet Limit: maximum 2 Pets per room, up to 30 pounds" and a call to the motel prior to making our reservation confirmed that the charge for our two pets would be $20 per night total, we booked a reservation for two nights. Everything went downhill from that point. On our way to our room we had to navigate around torn up carpeting in the hallway. About the only thing clean in the room when we got there was the linens and that was the first night. We got up early the next morning for a day of visiting and exploring, upon returning to our room in the late afternoon, we found that no one had taken the time to even provide us with clean towels let alone take the time to prepare the room that they were paid to do. When I went to the front desk to find out why our room hadn't been cleaned, I was met by a rude front desk employee , who I found out later to be the MOD. She gave me a set of excuses as to why our room had not been cleaned, including that the maid had left on an emergency. WOW only ONE MAID FOR THE ENTIRE MOTEL. I ended up having to call corporate customer service to get the room cleaned. I talked to Bryon who was nice and very helpful. He ended up calling the same rude woman I had dealt with at the Sleep Inn, who told him that "I did not give her a chance to explain and make things right". She FLAT OUT LIED to Bryon, since we later found out that our room had NEVER BEEN SCHEDULED TO BE CLEANED. He then told me that due to my inconvenience that they would comp my second nights stay but I would have to pay the pet fee. I agreed to that not knowing that they were not only charging me $40 a night for the two small dogs but that they had they already hit my credit card up for two full nights stay and had also put a pending on my card for another two nights stay. It was quite a shock to find out that this Sleep Inn had tied up almost $500 of my credit line when I was told on the phone that my two nights stay should end up costing me about $200. It actually took another phone call to Bryon at Corporate Customer Service in order to get my promised adjustment for the one nights stay and to get the pending charges removed. I still ended up paying $40 a night for my two small dogs instead of the $20 I expected to pay. Once we finally saw our bill and the total nightly charges we could have stayed at a far nicer motel in Beaufort, SC for just a few dollars more.
This episode with Sleep Inn has left such a disgusting taste in my mouth that staying at any of the Choice Hotel Group will be a LAST RESORT ONLY choice for us in the future.
