Having traveled to Wickford for shopping, we asked the store clerk for a restaurant recommendation and were surprised when she said that the ONLY restaurant in the vicinity that she would recommed was Tavern by the Sea.
We entered a surprisingly small dining room next to a pretty impressive bar and looked over the small but nice menu. We both chose entrees that had a scallop shell next to them - we guessed that those were the restaurant recommendations/specials.
I had a Gyro and my wife had a crab cake sandwich. Both were only $8.50, and both were delicious. The Gyro was made with tender and tasty beef (not lamb), with fresh vegetables and a pretty authentic-tasting yogurt and cucumber sauce (forget th name). I got to finish the crabcake sandwich, and it was quite good - moist with no real evidence of cheap fillers. Both came with choice of french fries or pasta salad. We had one of each. Fries were hot and good, Pasta salad was multi-color rotini, with a light dressing and somewhat al dente - also good.
Service was quick and attentive. Ice tea was quite good. Total bill for two sandwiches and one ice tea, with tax and without tip was $21.07 - remarkable for such a good meal.
One tip - especially for this time of year. We didn't realize that there was a larger room upstairs. It may have been full, as they were pretty busy - especially for 2PM, but, even with an outside, glassed in area to reduce the cold when the front door opens, it was still quite colder downstairs than upstairs.
