The Ocean House is a strikingly gorgeous hotel by the sea that rivals some of the best four and five-star resorts in Palm Beach, Santa Barbara and The Hamptons. An elegant "old-school" resort with modern-day verve, the Ocean House offers a dreamy seaside refuge for decadent long weekends (especially if you are a foodie who loves the ocean, exceptional decor and a delicate preppie sensibility) or longer vacations if you are willing to pay for this type of luxury, beauty and exceptional service (our room in the high season was $850+ per night).
The property is just absolutely stunning -- it really does look like "The Great Gatsby." Set along one of the most beautiful beaches in all of the US, the hotel is based in Watch Hill, RI, which epitomizes pristine, unspoiled coastal New England. I just can't imagine a better place for a romantic long weekend. You can have a decadent leisurely gourmet dinner at the hotel on Friday night. Walk the beach or run along the coast, visit antique shops, farm stands, gourmet stores and go for drives on Saturday. Find a funky but good place for dinner in neighboring Mystic, CT or Misquamicutt that evening. It would be the perfect place to get engaged -- it is truly that romantic and peaceful.
We stayed there on August 7-8 during the high season. Even though it was very busy, the staff was lovely -- helpful, polite, competent and friendly. The faciliites are sound -- well-stocked professional gym and delightful spa (I had a terrific blow-dry here). The beach service was 5-star (similar to high-end resorts in Miami and Palm Beach) -- which only heightens the experience of the roaring oceanfront and soft sandy beach that is totally private and only for hotel guests.
And then there are the "little things" in the rooms that are really fabulous -- the gorgeous modern bath tubs, the latest Molton Brown bath products, luxuriously soft towels and robes, the spectacular ocean views -- I could go on and on.
The restaurant and room service are both quite good. I had the most deliciously mixed icy vodka gimlet and refreshing herbal iced tea at the bar. We took our in-laws out for lunch on the Veranda and had a relaxing late lunch (tangy Caesar salad, sweet-and-hot BBQ pork and juicy burger sliders). The menus don't offer a plethora of choices but the food and drinks are well-prepared and made with fresh seasonal ingredients.
If you are willing to splurge for a decadent long weekend in unspoiled coastal New England, I would go to the Ocean House. This property offers so many good deals in the off-season so I recommend checking it out. Plus, its exceptional dining, spa and gym experience make it a nice getaway destination during the dreary winter months.
