“Ocean House: Splendor by the Sea”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2010

The Ocean House is a strikingly gorgeous hotel by the sea that rivals some of the best four and five-star resorts in Palm Beach, Santa Barbara and The Hamptons. An elegant "old-school" resort with modern-day verve, the Ocean House offers a dreamy seaside refuge for decadent long weekends (especially if you are a foodie who loves the ocean, exceptional decor and a delicate preppie sensibility) or longer vacations if you are willing to pay for this type of luxury, beauty and exceptional service (our room in the high season was $850+ per night).

The property is just absolutely stunning -- it really does look like "The Great Gatsby." Set along one of the most beautiful beaches in all of the US, the hotel is based in Watch Hill, RI, which epitomizes pristine, unspoiled coastal New England. I just can't imagine a better place for a romantic long weekend. You can have a decadent leisurely gourmet dinner at the hotel on Friday night. Walk the beach or run along the coast, visit antique shops, farm stands, gourmet stores and go for drives on Saturday. Find a funky but good place for dinner in neighboring Mystic, CT or Misquamicutt that evening. It would be the perfect place to get engaged -- it is truly that romantic and peaceful.

We stayed there on August 7-8 during the high season. Even though it was very busy, the staff was lovely -- helpful, polite, competent and friendly. The faciliites are sound -- well-stocked professional gym and delightful spa (I had a terrific blow-dry here). The beach service was 5-star (similar to high-end resorts in Miami and Palm Beach) -- which only heightens the experience of the roaring oceanfront and soft sandy beach that is totally private and only for hotel guests.

And then there are the "little things" in the rooms that are really fabulous -- the gorgeous modern bath tubs, the latest Molton Brown bath products, luxuriously soft towels and robes, the spectacular ocean views -- I could go on and on.

The restaurant and room service are both quite good. I had the most deliciously mixed icy vodka gimlet and refreshing herbal iced tea at the bar. We took our in-laws out for lunch on the Veranda and had a relaxing late lunch (tangy Caesar salad, sweet-and-hot BBQ pork and juicy burger sliders). The menus don't offer a plethora of choices but the food and drinks are well-prepared and made with fresh seasonal ingredients.

If you are willing to splurge for a decadent long weekend in unspoiled coastal New England, I would go to the Ocean House. This property offers so many good deals in the off-season so I recommend checking it out. Plus, its exceptional dining, spa and gym experience make it a nice getaway destination during the dreary winter months.

The place is one of a kind with its glorious ocean front setting. No expense has been spared and the hotel is just the kind of place you wish you could call home. The staff is wonderful, considerate, and looking to please. The food is outstanding though portions tend to be small. Nonetheless your palate will be delighted, especially with the local lobster. So sweet and succulent.

I had read some reviews prior to our stay last week and noticed that it has improved since their opening. I have to say that our experience was fabulous! We arrived for an early check-in and was personally escorted by a Guest Relations Manager; the room was gorgeous with Ocean view. We enjoyed walking around the property and had hot cocoa and treats mid-day in the lobby-all compliments. We then had a tour of the property and had a fabulous wine and cheese tasting before our dinner. We were bale to sample local cheeses and wines and honey with management;what a nice service. Dinner was also amazing; we had 3 plates with accompanying wine and then dessert. It was dark out and we had window seating and could hear the Ocean. The service was meticulous by everyone. The idea of their dining experience is similar to Europe where one tastes different plates in smaller portions but I have to say I found them to be just the right portion-I walked out full.

The bathtub in the room is beautiful and enjoyed that after dinner and then one in the morning with my coffee. We had an amazing breakfast with water view and then sat around the fire reading the paper. We loved the scones so much we asked of rhte recipe and they gave it to us.

We really enjoyed our stay and I enjoyed it more off-season. As a local I want to visit here again in the future off-season. I highly recommend this hotel to everyone.

This hotel is absolutely gorgeous - feels like you are going back in time (very great gatsby!) Our stay was incredible. Yes, it is expensive, but you are not allowed to tip (so tipping is included in room rate). Really romantic and worth the visit. Restaurant is very good as well. We stayed there for a full 2 days without ever leaving the hotel! Very relaxing and wonderful experience.

We spent 2 nights recently and overall had a great experience. The hotel which opened this past spring is right on the ocean with beautiful views and spacious rooms/bathrooms. We had a nice sized deck though it was too cold to stay for long. There is a mini-bar stocked with water/soda. The beach is a few steps away though it was off season can't say much more about it. There is a small indoor lap pool- it would be nice if they could put in an outdoor pool for summer. Spa is very nice though appointments were limited last minute. Service overall was excellent. There is a town but it closes down off season so there is not much else walking distance from the hotel and no other eating options. The restaurant service was very good and friendly but menu choices i thought were too rich and could not have eaten there more than 2 nights. It is great place and hope it does well.
