“A restored gem in Rhode Island”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 26, 2012

After reading a few negative comments about Ocean House on one or two travel sites, I feel compelled to offer my two cents. My husband and I spent three nights here in early October when the summer crowds had disappeared and found the accommodations and service to be first rate. The staff are very accommodating. Our room faced the ocean and was spacious, well appointed and quite large. It included a compact, well equipped kitchen that would be convenient for families, especially those with young children who don't want to eat all meals in a restaurant. The gratis jars of snacks & drinks were a nice touch and refilled every day. We ate on site and were generally pleased with the variety, preparation and service. Be aware that Watch Hill pretty much closes down after Labor Day during the week so off-site dining within walking distance or short drive is pretty much non-existent. A few shops and restaurants open on the weekend during the Fall season. We were there to relax and OH was a perfect place to do just that. I attended a cooking class at OH that was fun and a nice diversion. We never made it to the spa. Like many resorts that boom during the summer and rely on college help, I can see how maintaining the high level of service might be a challenge. However, we have nothing but praise for OH and will definitely return. OH is worth the splurge !

Thank you sincerely for your “two cents”. You make some good observations about how Watch Hill and the surrounding area does change dramatically once the summer has passed. We do now have a sister property, the Weekapaug Inn, which opened on October 7, 2012 and offers two dining options. As we are sister properties, we provide a shuttle service between the two so guests have expanded dining options. This is especially valuable once summer has passed and the local dining scene is reduced. The Weekapaug Inn also has a naturalist on staff who offers interesting tours and talks about the local environs, wild-life and birds. Guests at both properties are encouraged to utilize the services and offerings at both.

My wife and I decided to go to the Ocean House to celebrate our 20th anniversary. To be honest I have never heard of Watch Hill or the Ocean House before. When we arrived the valets and Bellmen made us feel welcome and let us know we were in first class weekend. Checking in was a OK and we were guided to our room. When we arrived in our room we were honestly disappointed. I had made the reservations in advance and had requested an Ocean View. We called the front desk and voiced our displeasure. Patrick came to our rescue and put us in a room the was wonderful. It met all our needs and was the type room we envisioned when we decided to go to the Ocean House. The employees at the OH are all very polite and friendly.
We purchased a package that included dinner and breakfast. We enjoyed both very much, the service was top notch. Our only thought was it was almost like the kitchen tried too hard and the food was confusing. Also, there really aren't many options.
In summary, we loved the OH and plan on returning sometime in the future.

Room Tip: Request the type room early.

I am pleased that Patrick was able to find you a room that satisfied you and that all of our staff and the service they provided was top notch. Our menu is always changing as we base our menus on a “farm-to-table” philosophy, using local purveyors and ingredients to offer the freshest and in-season dishes. We hope you will join us again.

The Ocean House in Watch Hill Rhode Island is OUTSTANDING!!! Nothing compares! This was an unforgettable and unparalleled experience. The food, the facility, the staff, etc. is second to none. Try this special property for an amazing get away -better than the Four Seasons! It truly is one of - if not the best - overnight lodging experiences ever!

Room Tip: ask for ocean view if possible.

All the great reviews are so on point. We love the OH and look forward to many returns. Renting a cabana during our Labor Day stay was fantastic and the service was beyond perfect. I can't wait for next summer to do a cabana repeat on the beach for several days. Our dinners in both the Club Room and Season's were delicious as usual with service to match. Thank you Leah for taking care of all my requests. We also want to compliment the OH wine sommelier Johnathan for his knowledge and friendliness.

Wow, what can I say about The Ocean House that hasn't already been said here? We spent a wonderfully memorable weekend here for our 10th Anniversary, along with our 8-year old daughter, and we couldn't have been more pleased with the setting and the service at this hotel.

It all comes down to details, details, details. From the moment you arrive till the moment you leave, you can tell this is a hotel that pays close attention to the details. And that makes ALL the difference. There was the concierge who went to great lengths to take the "perfect" family photo of us on the verandah. The valet person who gave our daughter a juice box to take in the car on the way home. The service we received was practically unparalleled.

The Weekapaug Suite is amazing. Amazing! Beautifully appointed with spectacular views. I loved the beach-y, modern decor. And back to the details... we loved the complimentary snacks, sodas, bottled water, and alcoholic beverages in the suite! This should be an industry standard for luxury hotels. Nothing makes you feel worse than paying an arm & a leg for an expensive room or suite, only to be charged $5 for every bottle of water or can of soda during your stay. It's insulting. The Ocean House gets it, and we greatly appreciated it!

The food and service in the restaurant was wonderful for lunch and dinner. Our dinner at Seasons was really special. I wish I could remember the name of our waiter because he was outstanding. We did have a couple issues with service at breakfast and brunch, but I will save the details for the restaurant review.

The setting and the grounds are gorgeous. Beautiful gardens (loved the honeybees!) and a fantastic beach with views of the lighthouse. Watch Hill itself is an adorable, quaint little beach town with plenty of simple delights.

We only have one real complaint: The bed was WAY too soft! It was a pillow-top mattress with a feather topper over it. Extremely squishy and not good for your back! Very surprising considering how spot-on everything else was. I had to cling to the side of the bed while sleeping, because heaven help you if you rolled toward the middle. You might never be seen again. If we had been staying longer, I would have definitely asked if they had another mattress or at least I would have taken the topper off. We would really love to visit the Ocean House again (especially in the summer) but I will need to ask them if there is any way to remedy the mattress situation. It's hard to enjoy all the wonderful things they have to offer if you can't get a good night's sleep.

That one issue aside, we loved The Ocean House and I'm so glad we chose to stay there for our special weekend.

Thank you for sharing. As tastes vary with the firmness desired in a bed, we do put toppers on our mattresses that can easily be removed by our housekeeping staff. I am sorry you spent two nights on a bed that was not to your liking. I do wish that you had mentioned this to us after the first night so we could have made your second night more comfortable. Our staff is ready and willing to address any issue a guest has and will work to find a solution. I am glad the rest of your experience with us was so positive.

We spent two nights over Columbus Day weekend at the Ocean House (courtesy of anniversary gift certificates) and it totally exceeded our expectations in just about every way. The setting is beyond spectacular and our room was amazing, with a huge balcony overlooking the Atlantic. Definitely try to ask for this type of room - it was just our dumb luck that we got one.
Prosecco at check in, local honey jar at our dinner table as an anniversary gift, free snacks in the room (my daughters would have attacked that minibar!), excellent room service for breakfast on our balcony, chocolate at bedside, in-room binoculars, caramel popcorn on checkout, what am I missing? So many exquisite little touches.
I had a New England Coastal escape at the OH! Spa - salt body scrub, which left me feeling like a newborn, hot stone massage and facial. All wonderful and professionally done. The relaxation room overlooking the ocean is particularly soothing.
We ate in the Bistro Friday night (excellent lobster mac and cheese and welcoming bartenders) and Seasons on Saturday night. Our friends drove up from Connecticut to join us for our anniversary dinner. It was in Seasons that we had just a little glitch/disappointment. I originally reserved a table for 6 people but changed it to 4 people two days in advance. I even called back to make sure of the change since the person on the phone seemed a little rushed. When we got to our room and saw our "agenda" for the weekend, the schedule said the reservation was for 2 people! I immediately called and was told it was confirmed for 4 people, sometimes the messages don't make it to the restaurant from the front desk. When we arrived on Saturday night, we were escorted to a table for 6 people!! We were hoping to sit in the enclosed front area at Seasons but there was no room - I suspect we might have had a better chance had our table been set up for the proper 4 guests. The hostess was young, inexperienced and somewhat perfunctory - more like Applebee's than Ocean House- but we did get seated at a nice banquette table.
It was here that I must give a tremendous shout-out to our waiter, Christopher. He was professional in every way. We were a little grumpy after the table mix-up, but the silver lining was getting him as a waiter. There was no menu question too obscure for him to answer and he was absolutely perfect in attending to us. There was a couple next to us also celebrating their anniversay and they were also unhappy with their table and wanted to combine the tasting menu with the regular menu. I heard Chris expertly and tactfully explain why the chef couldn't do that-there is an art to telling people they can't have something - especially people who are used to getting what they want. Chris handled the situation perfectly.

All in all, a most delightful weekend. We hope to go again very soon.

Thank you so much for this feedback about your stay. While I am pleased that most of the details of your stay were excellent, I am very sorry about the confusion with your dinner reservation. We do review and discuss the feedback we get from travel sites with our management team and, in turn, with our line staff. We are always working to improve our systems and communications to eliminate just these situations.
