The Warwick Crowne Plaza offers a well-appointed beautiful space for business meetings and small conventions, very clean and comfortable rooms, marvelous grounds, and mostly excellent service.
I stayed at the Crowne Plaza on a conference, so I had the pleasure of experiencing the meeting rooms, guest rooms, pool, fitness area and restaurants, and will describe them all here.
If you're planning on booking a hotel for a wedding reception, convention, business meeting, or any function where you need room to gather 30 to 500 people, then the Warwick Crowne Plaza won't disappoint. The hotel has a banquet room large enough to hold 500 people comfortably, a smaller banquet room with a beautifully decorated rotunda that could double as a planetarium, and several ballrooms; all of which can be configured to meet the needs of various sized groups. The dark-wood decor of the meeting rooms reminds me of Wall-Street investment club rooms or old D.C. bars, but updated with a touch of art-deco in the lighting.
I was in a single-king room, which was very clean and fresh with tasteful decor that echoed the dark wood of the meeting and ballrooms on the main floor. The room apparently adjoined a suite, as evidenced by a connecting door on one wall, which offered very little buffer against the noise of the person staying in that room, but I don't hold that against the hotel because I couldn't reasonably expect a connecting door to block out all noises. The television, phone, wired Internet connection, coffee-maker, and hairdryer all worked perfectly. The Ethernet cable was located conveniently at the writing desk where it was pleasant to work on my laptop by the window overlooking the grounds. The bathroom shower had the kind of rod that bows outward allowing for more elbow room, and the shower head was designed to give a wide spray pattern. The bed was a standard mattress with pillow-top (no sleep numbers or memory foam), which slept wonderfully. The comforter was standard hotel fair, but the under-linens were above average in softness and comfort.
The pool at the Warwick Crowne Plaza is a bit small, but it's indoors and warm enough for swimming even in October. There's a small hot tub and a wood lined sauna as well. The fitness rooms were tiny, but offer a decent selection of weight machine, bicycles and treadmills for travellers looking for a short workout.
The Crowne Plaza has two restaurants that share the same kitchen. Alfred's Lounge is a bar that offers drinks, coffee and desserts, although you can also get dinner if you ask. The lounge is appointed like a library with books and nick-nacks lining the walls, small tables backed into every possible nook and cranny, and subdued lighting. It was a pleasure to lounge at a two-seat table and enjoy a coffee and slice of cheesecake in Alfred's, and the service was quick and very friendly.
On the other hand, Remingtons, the main restaurant, was a disappointment. The layout is awkward, with tables set at angles that make it difficult for servers to navigate, and multitiered so you're either looking down into someone else's dinner or feeling like other diners are hovering over you. The service in Remingtons was sub-par; the hostess looked bored, one server took our drinks order, and then passed us off to another server who rushed our decision on what to have before taking an astoundingly long time to serve up our food. When it arrived, the food was closer to something I would expect from Denny's than from a mid-to-high-end hotel restaurant.
Other than the Remingtons experience the staff at the Crowne Plaza were all exceptionally helpful and pleasant to deal with. Nearly everyone smiled, said hello or good morning, and often offered to help without being asked. The front-desk staff were all very quick and professional, and I noticed that the same staff were there through most of my stay--full-time professionals rather than part-timers. The shuttle drivers were great to talk with, gave us advice on places to eat, and were happy to pick us up and drop us off several different places throughout our stay.
Overall, the Crowne Plaza Warwick met my expectations from a mid-to-high-end hotel in terms of ammenities and appointment, left me sorely disappointed with its restaurant, and exceeded my expectations of service and attitude from the rest of the staff.
