“Sail away on the Block Island Ferry.....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

Now first of all, the job of a ferry is to get you from point "A" to point "B"; this isn't the Love Boat or Carnival Cruises (thank goodness!). BUT, I have to say that the experience on the BI Ferry was much nicer than it needed to be. The trip takes 50-60 minutes and is very enjoyable on its own. You can sit on the top deck or inside on the mezzanine, even grab a snack at the snack bar. We recently went over and back with an elderly person and a dog, and all did well, although the dog almost got seasick on the way over--it was quite choppy that day; remember your Dramamine for any human or pet prone to motion sickness. (The ride back was smooth as glass and no issues!) We also brought a car. If bringing a car, you need to make reservations well in advance, as there is a limit to how many will fit. Do it as soon as you make your plans--several months ahead, if possible, to assure you'll have a spot. You will have to buy tickets for the passengers as well, which does not have to be done at the same time; you can do that at the walk-up window the day of your trip--the fee for bringing a car does not cover its occupants. And yes, you do have to BACK your vehicle onto the Ferry, but attendants are there to guide you. If you are not skilled in reverse (as I observed someone who was NOT, heehee), the attendants will do it for you! Bringing a car over is expensive, but everything about Block Island is, and cars are not particularly encouraged on the island so it is a way of financially discouraging you from doing so--with an elderly person in my party, however, it was a necessity for me. The ferries run promptly, so arrive about an hour in advance as suggested on the website. The ferry is dog-friendly, but you must keep your dog leashed and off the seats, which is also stated on their website--there is no fee for your dog. Their website is a good place to start to educate yourself on how it all works; they have a good FAQ section and other information to help you through. Everyone on the phone and on the docks were very helpful too. Even the dock bathrooms were sparkling clean! In all, I found the Block Island Ferry to be a very pleasant and restful experience--your Block Island vacation begins with the Ferry ride!

“Enjoyed the ride”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2013

This is a nice way (not too many ways to get to Block Island) to travel. You can go faster by taking the high speed ferry, but why when you can have a nice leisure ride and it only takes an hour.
They have clean bathroom and some drinks. If you get a little sea sick, you can always go inside on the 2nd deck.
The view is nice on the upper deck and when it's 95 and extremely humid on the coast, being on this ferry is what the doctor ordered! Nice and cool on the ferry.

“Expensive ride but they got you”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 18, 2013

I've been over to Block Island twice. As stated it is expensive $25 but hey, I don't have my own boat. We didn't bring our car either. Each time the start was a little choppy which is to be expected but if you get motion sickness take sure you take something for it. The experience was fine I just really think the price was crazy.

“Quite a trip”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013

I haven't been on the Block Island ferry for at least 20 years but had reason to go over to the island recently.
The process to reserve and check in when you arrive is very simple and the people running it are very helpful and pleasant. For the car ferry (Traditional) keep in mind though you have to BACK onto the ferry! It was no problem for me with a compact car but I imagine its quite daunting with a big vehicle.
Anyway the ferry was built in 1997 so its in pretty good shape and is kept immaculate. Also there's a decent snack bar on board - try the Block Island Ferry Bloody Mary!
It takes about an hour port to port and if the weather is good its a great ride.

“Part of the experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

For those saying the Ferry is the only way to get to Block Island...you have 3 (4 choices, if you count swimming...although I don't recommend that!). The Traditional Ferry, the Hi Speed Ferry and the airport in Westerly. If you're staying for a week and need to park a car, flying out of Westerly is a great option! They let you park for free--and by the time you get a ferry ticket and parking for a week in Galilee--its the price of airfare.

The Hi Speed Ferry is pricey--around $50 round trip, but the regular ferry is a bargain at about $25 round trip out of Galilee/Pt. Judith. A relaxing ride over is part of the experience, take the traditional ferry and it'll help you get on island time quicker :)

Relax, enjoy...what's the hurry?
